Well I have been in the competitive RC hobby for over 20 years now. When I took a new job in the fall of 2007, it placed me 2 hours from the closest RC car track. I had to find a new way to fuel my RC passion. My coworkers told me of a group of guys that flew planes over by the entrance to work. In the summer of 2008 I searched around and found a club member that got me contact information. Turned out that this was for the most part a "Sailplane" club with a fantastic slope flying site as their home field. From way back in my racing days, I actually tried to start a couple sailplane kits, so this was right down my alley.
I started using the internet to research and see what type of plane I wanted to start with. First I was looking at electric ARF's from Tower, and then found some different forums. I soon found out that there was a large cottage industry for the DIY builder. Again this was perfect for me.
To get my feet wet, I purchased a DL50 from Mountain Models to cut my teeth on. I wanted something to get the basics of soaring without having to go out and purchase support equipment. The thought of being able to throw my plane up without needing a hi-start or electric motor was a big factor in my decision. The choice of the DL50 itself was because it was a simple Rudder/Elevator model, and I was able to use two cheap Hxt900 servos.
