I started with RC cars and gliders when I was in primary scool, but had to take a long break from the hobby when I was send to boarding school. Scool was followed by 7 years at university.

In 2004 I decided to return to the hobby and got myself a 4ch radio and a 2m glider with 550 can motor and 6cell NiCd pack . I was ripped off by the Hobby shop in Johannesburg. It was the worst flying, overweight, underpowered plane ever!! Electrics was a bit of an black art back then. Brushless motos just-just started to arrive in the shops and LiPos were dangerous things that explodes when you overcharge them. Lipos and brushless motors cost about twice then what they do now!!

Got bored with it and had some money lying around and decided that it needs an upgrade so I bought my first brushless motor and Lipopack. It was a little Hyperion z2213-20 and a Flight Power 3s 2200mAh 8C discharge pack (state of the art back then). Now flight times were in excess of 40min!!

I lived about 300m from the local slope flying site in East-Londan and had a lot of fun with foam on the slope.

Since then I have had a lot of planes. Could still...Continue Reading
