WOW! I managed to pull off another trip & made the Zillah Big Bird event today. Talk about perfect weather, great food & great people! Just amazing. Thankfully, Zillah is only about 40 minutes from the house and all freeway driving. This was another one of those 'You shoulda' been there' events. Unfortunately, every darn vid I took went south so I just compiled the images into a vid. I have 'GOT' to get a better camera. I hope you can at least enjoy the vid of all the birds and people that turned out. A big thanks to the YVAM Club for sponsoring the event and all the hard work that went into it. One of the nicest fields in the Pacific Northwest. My own club is sponsoring IMAC District Finals on Sept. 28th~30th so at least I'll have some time to just fly and do a build review on a new bird. A hoo-rah to Gary Weaver for coming down and doing the auction again. The people are just fantastic.

If you live anyplace/anywhere close to this event and missed it, you definitely missed out. How can you beat 68 degrees, dead calm, sunny, friendly people and some wicked pilots? Plus I was sitting in the shade doing the vids.

I couldn't believe the amount or quality of raffle prizes.Talk about sponsorship! WHEW! Huge thanks to PAU, DA, Horizon, SWB, HiTec, Hobbico, 3DHS and so many others. Just unbelievable! A HUGE congrats to the Red Apple Club. This is without a doubt one of the finest clubs and fields I've ever seen or even had the pleasure of visiting. This is, or was, one of those "Ya shoulda been there!" events. I just hope Matt checked my tickets and I'm a big winner....

There's a ton of pics & vids on the Flying Giants forum, just use the included link. I 'suspect' there will be more coming.

Well, it was a long day filled with unknowns. Unknown if there would be pilots or spectators as this was a 1st event. Even though it's a 2-1/2 hour drive just to get there, the wife & I loaded up and went for it. Granted we just went for photos and the BS but what the hey. We were not to be disappointed. We got there about 9:30am and there was a pretty fair gathering of pilots & spectators already. Goldendale, WA is not a big town. It's like 3400 population. During our visit, more pilots and more visitors just kept rolling in. The weather was perfect as there was a slight breeze straight down the runway, no clouds & plenty of sunshine. I even pinked up a little more with the sunshine.

Just guessing, I'd estimate there were around 150 or so people there at any givin time. I forgot to ask how many registered pilots were there but there were enough that planes were constantly in the air. Although the event was to be a War bird Event, it seemingly culminated into a fly-what-ya brung affair. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of warbirds there in different flavors. There was a group from the Spokane/Deer Park WA area that attended and they had a 250+ mile drive.

One pilot flew into the event in a 172 and brought planes to fly. But the best was yet to come. The organizers of the event had made arrangements for WAAAM to bring in a full scale Waco UBF. Reportedly, there are only 6 of these still flying in the USA. BTW, IF you have never made it to Hood River,...Continue Reading
