When I was in primary scool my brother and I spotted a couple of balsa kits for sale in the local newsagent. Our father told us about how he used to build them when he was a boy so we saved all our measly pocket money and one dark winters evening after school we bought them. We'd built several plastic model kits before then and we marvelled at the pictures of the wooden framework on the side of the box. When we opened the boxes we were horrified to see nothing but a bundle of sticks and die crunched balsa sheets. We persevered with the models but never got beyond sticking some tissue to the partially completed framework before the remnants were put in a shoebox to be forgotten.
Fast forward to 1984, I'd found a balsa glider kit called the Nomad that a friend talked me through building and it flew very well. A few model later and I'm up for my first RC kit, an Aeroflyte brolga which had donzens of hand launch flights at local ovals a a total of 2 bungee launches before I discovered that RC cars and boats were so much easier to find somewhere to use.
In 2002 for some reason I had a look at some rc models online and soon discovered the parkflyer scene. I bought a rather 2nd hand firebird XL off ebay and pretty much flew it until it died but I was hooked. This was followed by a GWS j-3 stick, a blue foam parkflyer pete which introduced me to ailerons and an RPM Snark 5T which was bought in 1985 and never flown. Originally designed for buggy motors and battery packs I fitted it with mini servos, a geared 400 and 6, 7 and then 8 cell 2/3A packs, this setup saving about half a kilo on the original spec. Added to this was a GWS corsair now fitted with brushless and LiPos and a Protech Alpha 180 motor glider.
