Throw Out That Math Crap

In this week's show, we dip into the mail bag and do our best to answer some listener emails that have been lingering for a while. There's some discussion on safely parallel charging your LiPos, some Taranis info, and even some advice on getting a listener started in Multi-Rotor FPV.

A Purpose-Built UAV

This week we get a chance to help someone out with an interesting project aimed at satisfying his collegiate requirements. Our friend Willmsy decided to take on the task of building his first Multi-Rotor aircraft and set it up with his first FPV system. The end result is to have a UAV that can be used as a tool for Search And Rescue applications. Join us as we do our best to offer up options and considerations to Willmsy on the interesting project!

Flying The Soapbox

In this 260th installment of the show, we step up on our soapbox for a bit regarding all that is going on today between modelers and the FAA. Now is the time for us to pull together and inform people what our hobby is all about, rather than letting the misleading mainstream media do it in their most sensationalistic way possible (Ewww! Scary Drones!).

Faltan Dos Amigos

In this 259th installment of our little show, we are without KarlK and IFYOS - they said they were busy with other things, but I'm betting they were still hungover from their Cinco De Mayo festivities. LoL Nonetheless, Laine, Nav, and I carry the show this week with some news of some interesting new items, events, and where we are with the Help A Vet program (note that we still need a few items!).

Open Source And RC

We thought about naming this 258th installment something like "Let's Hum Along With Laine", but decided that was just too long of a title. LoL In this show, we get to share some really interesting listener pictures (available at link below), a couple of interesting videos, and the fact that one of our favorite kit-makers is now selling a couple of our favorite kits! We also visit with our buddy, Mark Harrison from Eastbay-RC, for an interesting discussion relative to last week's OpenSource discussion, and then we get into some Taranis talk. Yep, we're still diggin' on this great radio!

Please don't forget about our Help A Vet program! In this episode we share a few things we are still looking for and would enjoy any help you maybe able to offer.

More Than A Little Info

We are all back in the workshop for this 257th installment of our show and in this one, we share some news items, dip into the mail bag, and even talk a little about Open Source projects. There's a LOT of info in this show and it's way too much to try to write a description for here.

Please pay special attention to the announcement where we are looking to gather up some equipment for a friend in the hobby. If you think you may be able to lend a hand, just send me an email with the subject line "HELP A VET"!

SEFF 2014 Recap

This 256th installment of our show finds us all back in our respective workshops after a great week at the mecca that is Hodges Field. Though SEFF 2014 had a little bit of a different 'feel' this year, it was still an outstanding event! The rains at the beginning of a week slowed us down for a bit, but the rest of the week offered up some fantastic weather! Join us as we do our best to summarize what we took away from this year's annual reunion.

I'd like to also offer up our special THANKS! to Kuan and GWS USA for their sponsorship of this year's new and somewhat 'unofficial' event - the 2014SEFFFATCCCGWSUCNRC (or the 'GWS Acronym Challenge' as we started calling it). These kind folks sent us their Funny Park, P38, and P40 kits along with some very nice shirts to give away. Though some of their product line may seem a bit outdated, these things all fly VERY WELL and are quite easy to convert to today's brushless systems. Don't overlook these kits, as they offer up some great value and bang for the buck! My Formosa flew wonderfully and I'm certain to get many great flights from it!

The Renegades

Yours truly here got so wrapped up in the SEFF magic this year that I did NOT do a show from Hodges Field. Fortunately, a band of 'Renegades' got together and put together a really cool show for the one I failed to record. At this point, I cannot tell you with any real certainty exactly who all is on this show (I'm actually listening to the recording as I type this LoL), but I thank all of you for your help with this!

Join us for next week's show, as we should all be back in our respective workshops and will be streaming our recording session LIVE again!

Event Prep - SEFF 2014

This 254th installment of our show finds half of your co-hosts preparing for one of the biggest events on the calender here in North America - SEFF 2014. In this rather 'loose' episode, we discuss some of the things you may want to prepare for to enjoy an event like this to it's full potential.

There will be no LIVE show next week planned, but you may want to watch our Facebook Show Page and Facebook Listeners Discussion Page for a surprise announcement! It looks as though KarlK and IFLYOS may throw in a 'pirate show' while Crash, NavionFlyer, and Laine are at SEFF!

Multi-Rotor Questions Answered

In this 253rd installment of our show, we dive into the mailbag to answer some of your questions with the help of our special gues, Witespy from ReadyToFlyQuads! Also, during our 'personal updates' portion of the show, I give a short review of a new product I've been able to try out recently and share my impression of a really nice new Quadcopter frame that I just received!

Will you be in the LA area and are interested in attending the RCX on May 17-18th? You can score one of 8 free tickets being given away by SDParkFlyers by liking their Facebook page, and commenting and sharing the post there regarding the giveaway!

A Pretty Decent Show

In this 252nd offering of our show, we share what we've been up to as of late. I got to attend the Austin Multi-Rotor Fest and met up with some old friends, and made some new ones, too! I saw some great new technology and walked away with a great experience, thoug the weather was less than desirable.

We dig into the mailbag this week and try to answer some questions, mainly regarding how we light up our aircraft for night-flying. This is some pretty good information, since SEFF is coming up in just a few weeks and night-flying is one of the most popular events for this gathering!

And Even More Workshop

This 251st installment of our show has the whole gang present and we try to build on last week's segment where we continue discussing the items every workshop should have. We also talk about how GWS has sponsored our 2014SEFFFATCCCGWSUCNRC 'thing' we are planning to do at SEFF this year with three cool prizes. Furthermore, they are discounting their kits to make it even cheaper for you to get YOUR airframe to participate in this unofficial event! In addition, we try our best to answer a couple of listener questions that you may find informative, as well.

Outfitting Your Workshop

In this, our 250th installment of the show, we delve into some of the essential things you'll need when setting up a workshop for that first 'real' build. Pretty much ANY area can be used for assembling an ARF or BNF project, but when you are ready to tackle building a kit, you'll be needing some special tools, as well as a designated area to pull off your build. This is a timely episode, as some of us are tackling a BIG top-secret build project that will, hopefully, be ready in time for SEFF. The size of this project is even going t be challenging for MY personal workshop!

The only links I am posting this week are for some great events this year that you should consider attending if you can!

Microbursts And Dust Devils

In this 249th installment of our show, we get to talk with a couple of gents that have been doing the RC gig for quite a while and are quite well-known. Michael Morgan from DW Foamies fame has expanded his line-up of RC offerings to include some very interesting Multi-Rotor airframes now! Also joining us is Michael's Field Rep/Tester/Lab Rat/Thrasher/Crasher, Chris 'RPMRPM' Madsen.

I had the opportunity last week to test out some of their new frames and have been quite impressed with them. One of the airframes lends itself to a great aerobatic performer, while the other will certainly prove to be a good platform for a small and easily portable 'mini' quad. If you've been in the market for an airframe to suit either of these niches, then you'll want to listen to this episode!

Cheap Knock-Offs, E-Fest, And Mini-Rotors

In this 248th installment of our show, we give you a product review for an inexpensive camera you may want to look at, some event coverage of E-Fest that Vintauri was able to attend (thanks, Steve!), and Witespy is back to share his expertise in the world of multi-rotors. Also, buried somewhere in this show you'll find a PSA (Public Service Announcement) that all modelers should heed.

Prepping For Spring

With Spring fast approaching, and I know most of us are ready to be done with this Winter stuff, we discuss some things you might want to do to get your fleet ready for the upcoming flying season!

In this 247th episode, we also discuss the sad news that a couple of our favorite RC businesses have (or will be) closing up shop:

ReadyHeli, as we understand it, has ceased operations. However, it looks as though HeliDirect may be offering up some warranty service for some of the products that customers may have purchased from RH on a limited basis. Customers needing warranty service may want to get in touch with HeliDirect customer service to find out how they may be able to help.

Also, after 26 years in the business, it seems that Miniature Aircraft (a leader in the domestic RC helicopter industry) will cease operations on February 28th. This is particularly sad, as MA has been known industry wide for the fine products that they made right here in the good old U.S. of A. Check their website for details on where their existing stock will be going so you can stock up on parts for your favorite heli!

Our pet project this year, as it was last year, is the Wings For Wishes Montana IV event that benefits the Make A Wish foundation in Montana. This year will be the fourth annual event and if you cannot make it but still want to help them out, please consider making a donation to this great cause!

I Want That OX!

In this 246th installment, we catch up on a couple of news pieces that we've forgotten to share for the last two weeks, and then we get to catch up with the PhlatBoyZ' Mark and Trish Carew. They advise that the OpenBuilds site is up and rocking, and boy are there some neat projects going on over there! If you're wondering what the heck the title of this week's show is all about, well, it should be clear when you listen in.

During our streamed recording session, I also streamed a slideshow to our audience with pictures of a couple of new Ready To Fly OPQ's from ReadyToFlyQuads (which, incidently, sold out during our broadcast LoL). This got me to thinking! I would LOVE to have your pictures of the projects you are working on to stream during our weekly prodcasts! If you would like us to share YOUR project, email me a JPG image and I will include it in the slideshow! PRO TIP: Open up the image in your image editor (Paint works well for this on Microsoft systems) and put in your user name before sending the pic to my email address that I include in the lead-out music in each show.

The MultiWii flavor of Flight Stabilization has been my choice to make all of my multi-rotors flyable. I have tried other systems, but have had limited success (I guess you just can't teach an old dog new tricks. LoL), so I always come back to the MWC systems.

As of late, I honestly don't think there's a greater value to be found in ANY of the Flight Stabilization Systems than the FLIP 1.5 from ReadyToFlyQuads.com. You can get this base system for as little as $15, and for about $26 if you get Witespy to solder the pins in, put it in a protective case, add the Rx wire set, and even include a USB cable! Perhaps the greatest thing about buying your MWC boards from Witespy is that he will pre-flash it with the firmware settings you choose (QuadX, QuadPlus, Tricopter, etc.) and I have yet to have a board where his preset PIDs have not flown my aircraft. This really saves you considerable time in getting that new multi-rotor project in the air! All you have to do is properly set up your Tx and preferred switch for the Accelerometer and you're ready to go!

The only problem with MWCs is that I have had great difficulty finding one place that explains how these boards work, as well as how to set things up optimally for your first flight. You see, while the MultiWii boards have perhaps the greatest and largest group of folks always working to make this open-source, collaborative effort ever better, from what I can tell, no one has spent time creating something to educate the...Continue Reading

Just Winging It

This 245th episode is a prime example of how, no matter how hard you may plan, Murphy's Law sometimes pops in to prove who's really the boss. LoL We started off with a plan for this show and then we thought our planned guest wouldn't be able to make it, then Tim King had to work late, then Laine's internet connection flaked out. Fortunately, our guest WAS actually able to pop in and help us out, so all in all, we ended up with a pretty informative show.

After our round table discussion of our recent activities, we share some news of the items that Horizon Hobby has impressed us with during the Nuremburg 2014 exhibition. Then we get on to meeting up with our friend CK from RiteWingRC to talk about some general topics regarding Flying Wings. There is some really good info on this! Thanks so much to Chris for coming on and sharing his expertise in this area!
