I didn't want do have the Tonka body go in the street in winter time as we use road salts over here and I was afraid it would attack the metal body that took me some time to restore and paint. The Tonka body is also pretty heavy so not all that good to ride on snow.

I decided to mod the stock Summit body to have something that ressemble a pickup truck, inpired by Woby's truck. Here is what I came with;...Continue Reading

Here is the new relay box so I can fly 1,3 ghz with my 5,8 ghz attitudes goggles. It feels so free not to be tethered to your ground station ! Also helps position the GS on a better site for improved reception when riding the Tonka Summit. Antennas can be stored inside for transport.

Big hole is for tripod handle: Placed vertically it enters the relay box to hold it. Can also add a broomstick to elevate relay box to get better signal reception.

Still needs some tweaking of the KK2 PIDs. Flown with stock settings. Weight is 975 grams with the GoPro without FPV gear. Heavy, but seems to have some great FFF speed Can't wait to try it FPV:

Its been a while since I wanted to do this. We have a big walking trail in the middle of town that makes a circuit around the river, across 2 big pedestrian bridges and one smaller that leads to an island int he midle of the river.

I installed the GS on the island for best video link, wich means the truck would be traveling on each side of the river, out of my reach if a bad intend person would take it away

I finally found the courage to do it, and all went very well. Enjoy the (non edited full lengh) video:

I did some range tests with my Tonka Summit and here is the max range I got so far. Could have gone further but the trail was blocked. Almost 1 km is a pretty good distance considering you have a multi $ RC truck on the ground pretty far from you...

Driving the Tonka Summit is way cool. The FPV camera did a good job but when you record the live feed and edit it to vimeo or youtube the quality goes down and it is not that great to look at. So I made an aluminum pan and tilt mount for my GoPro HD cam.

Fred (the driver) looks more Bionic than ever, but the recorded video is now as great as the idea to convert an old Tonka body to FPV !

When you can't fly, you can drive ! And when its cold, what's better than to FPV from the couch in the basement with the big flat screen ?

After driving the Summit FPV for a couple of months, here is my final set up. I now run the Summit with a Dragon link UHF system coupled to my DX7. I drive with the right stick, control pan and tilt with the left stick. Differentials locking is on flaps and low/high gear is on gear. I still have one channel left for an accessory, most probably I'll add a horn.

The goal is still to build a Tonka Summit, but for winter I prefer to stick with the stock body. So far it is plenty fun and I really love the truck. I use a security 2000 camera for night drive and a GoPro for day drive.

Basic FPV system (200 mW 900 mhz with stock omnis) installed on top of stock body with stock radio. Lot of fun to drive. Not very entertaining video, but made to show what the truck will do and the range I get. Wil have to play with antennas and frequencies to find best set up, goal is to get over 1/2 km range.

I've been dreaming of a summit since they got out. After beeing tempted many times I was tired of controlling myself and made the move. I got it yesterday and despite some light rain today I had to try it. Man this thing is too awsome !

Inspired by Woby videos and Replay's Tonka summit (those guys deserve the credit, they did a great job) I bought a Tonka bronco truck for it and I'll shamelessly copy those guys ideas and build myself a Ken and Barbie FPV truck.

Here is a video of the first drives:

Good performance of the 900 mhz 200 mW video system here. Could go about 300 meters deep in the forest:
