As I'm sure everyone knows, the midwest has received quite a few thunderstorm systems recently. Many of these systems have cloud formations and dark colors that, when combined with the afternoon sun, have an interesting appearance. So, yesterday when the sun was shining on a system south of my location I thought I'd try to take some AP shots of it. I knew the storm wouldn't come near my location, and that I wouldn't have to worry about rain.

I assembled the plane, performed a range check and launched. As the plane was climbing out I saw a few flashes of lightning and heard some thunder. Once the plane had reached an altitude of about 800 feet I trimmed back the throttle and started taking pictures of the horizon. I continued taking pics as the storm started to grow and the plane continued to climb.

As the plane grew smaller and smaller, I realized that the storm must have somehow created an updraft. So I cut the throttle, hoping I wouldn't loose the plane. That was the longest amount of time my AP plane has ever glided for! More than 1/2 of the flight was flown without the prop turning.

After the plane finally came down I decided it was time to head in. Here are a few of the pictures I got:
