"The U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC) in Natick, Mass., has established the Cargo Pocket Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance program, or CP-ISR. This applied systems approach seeks to develop a pocket-sized aerial surveillance device that will augment over-the-hill ISR capabilities for soldiers in challenging battlefield environments. This platform will support the Army Capabilities Integration Center's Manned Unmanned Teaming (Ground) Limited Objective Experiment, or LOE."

The Curtiss-Wright CW-1 Junior has been visible in the NASM Udvar-Hazy restoration hangar for a good while. She was recently moved to the exhibit area.

A Eurofighter Typhoon adorned with commemorative D-Day invasion stripes has been unveiled ahead of the 70th anniversary of the landings.
The state-of-the-art jet has been specially painted with the famous black and white markings in tribute to the role of the crews of the Hawker Typhoon during the D-Day operations.
It took to the skies today at an unveiling ceremony at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire alongside a similarly adorned Spitfire, which flew in the landings.

I went flying Saturday morning. Behind my runway area is a dumpster belonging to the building next door. A truck arrived to take the dumpster away. I was near the end of the battery and was on approach to final. The truck was about 20 feet behind me and the motor was loud bit not terrible.

As I crossed the threshold, about 5 feet up... the driver thought it would be fun to watch me as he rammed the dumpster while sounding his horn. A jerk of my head, and of my thumb, produced a nose up into a stall and she pancaked onto the asphalt. The driver laughed aloud until he saw me picking up pieces.

He was man enough to stop the truck and come apologize, although he did not offer to make good the damage to my $200 plane.

The fuselage broke in two. All the cabanes sheared and the associated wing and fuselage attach fixtures as well. The undercarriage splayed. The lower wing attach fitting ripped from the fuselage.

It's the broken plastic parts that hurt. I can glue foam together. I figure it will take an upper wing to get the plastic fittings, a new set of cabanes, and probably a new fuselage, because of the broken cabane fittings there.

I may try to fix her without ordering parts and just buy another one, before she is discontinued.

"BBCC 3" -- 3rd Balsa Builders Conversion Contest Judgment Thread

It was a difficult season for many of the participants but, as of 28 August 2014, three participants successfully flew their entries in BBCC 3.

It is now up to you to decide the "best build."


The contest thread is located HERE. This poll will be "open" until midnight UTC, 31 March 2014. The current time UTC is available HERE.

Each participant, listed at the bottom of this post, built and flew a radio controlled model aircraft, constructed predominantly of balsa, based upon a kit or plans not originally designed for radio control. The poll, located at the top of this thread, will decide whose entry is declared "Best Build;" the winner receiving:
1) The choice of:
a) three Peter Rake aviation art prints or
b) a single Peter Rake build plan (see the list appended to Post #1 of the contest thread for selection and http://www.peterrake.com for photos of the planes built from the plans).
Thanks to Peter Rake for his generosity.
2) A NIB laser-cut kit of the 24" Guillow's Nieuport II -- graciously provided by pburress.
You may use whatever criteria you wish, but I hope you will do the following:
1. Click on each of the links/pictures below, which will take you to a participant's build thread.

2. Read through each thread and comment as you wish; adding your encouragement, appreciation, and good ideas.

EIGHT turbojets, mounted in four pods beneath the wings, will power an experimental version of the Convair B-36, now under construction, which may fly later this year. Designed to attain 550 m.p.h. at 55,000 ft, the all-jet B-36 will have 35-deg sweep-back of wings and tailplane. The present B-36D, with six piston engines and four jets,reaches 435 m.p.h. at altitude.
