Started working with the XFLR5 program, teaching my own self how to use it and get something useful out of it. Once I started going step by step through one of the tutorials it all started to be kind of easy to use.

Anyone that has ever seen the graphs and 3D output from XFLR5 and thought it looked too much like rocket science, think again. I thought the same thing until I started going through a few of the examples and saw what I was doing actually worked!

Now I can say that XFLR5 is very quickly becoming a rather sharp tool in my kit for this hobby, and you can't beat the price, it's FREE.

Haven't put up a blog entry for a while so this seemed like a good time to do so. Just finished up building a 1945 JASCO Thermic 72. A 72" Free Flight, pod & boom glider that I updated to an R/E 2.4 Ghz R/C control. Went with a full flying stab and kept the stock rudder section, only hinging it and slapping on a control horn. Thought I would post this here as I am not getting any responses from the regular place. Maybe no one has ever tried this or come up with some other solution?

What I am looking for is a CF tube and rod combo for use on a tiperon build that I am kicking around. What I need is a CF tube in the 4mm - 5mm range and a CF rod that will fit inside as an axle with very little slop but will still turn freely.

I am looking for hands on the parts fitting reports and not "paper fitting" as I can do that much my own self. Given the varying tolerances with ID tubes and OD rods, I would like to know if anyone has personal experience or can fit the parts that they have on hand and provide the info on the sizes and manufacture of the parts.

I do not currently have any CF tube or rod on hand in that size range and want to avoid having to order a bunch of different tube and rod from different places just to TRY and find something that works. This is going to be laminated into the wing so something like nylon tube won't work. (glue wont stick) and tube will be doubling as a spar.

After receiving 2 comments about my inclusion of music in my flight videos within 24 hours, I have made the decision to remove the links to all the videos that I have made of my flights. While I have yet to see any one else's videos with music in the sound track draw this kind of attention, for what ever reason, mine have.

My first thought was to re-edit those "offending" videos and post them with the raw audio (including some colorful language and/or distorted motor noise). Though after a few moments of serious thought, I came to the conclusion that the simplest, easiest, less labor intensive route to take was the route of John Galt. While not a direct allegory of that situation, that salutation to these problems has served me well in the past and in the long run will continue to be of the same such service.

To those that were upset, irritated, put off, or otherwise inconvenienced by my inclusion of music in my flight videos, I apologizes, and to those that enjoyed or at best tolerated my inclusion of music to mask otherwise undesirable audio, I commend you.

Took to the notion that being around so many hills and all, I would try my hand at sloping. Being someone that builds everything I fly, having an interest with flying wings, and the KF airfoil, I thought I would give a run at a DLG / Sloping wing. It needed to be relatively easy to build. fly descent and if possible, be built from a single sheet of Dollar Tree foam board. Undertaking this "little" project has opened up a new learning adventure for me. So far I have found out several things that DO NOT WORK. The first being that a KF step on the bottom side of the wing, while working very well for powered flight, will make a gliding wing fly more like the space shuttle. (down). A few more things are still getting sorted out and once done will be mentioned in further posts.

The wing started out as a KFm4 build. The bottom step, destroying any chance of a good glide came off. Now testing as a KFm2 this wing is starting to show real promise. Not quite there yet but getting closer.

Here is a video of a few test flings of the wing in KFm2 configuration.(video removed) The wind was up and I did not make the best DL's. Still it is doing much better than when I first started. Next is to reduce the drag on the wing tips and have another round of testing.

Built a tow sled for my key chain can following RCSquales build of the Baby Squale. Hooked her up behind my Divinity wing and had a go at it. Issues with one of the elavons brought a quicker end to the flight than what was planned, but all in all, not that bad for my first attempt. Have a sneeky-peeky-lookie-see at the video.(video removed) Presented with warts and all. Only edited audio for adult language and the time Baby Squale was sitting on the ground doing nothing while I unwrapped the tow line from the prop after the second failed launch.

It was suggested that I start on the blog portion of this most excellent site, so here I am.

Maybe I should start with a bit about me and RC flying. When I was a young'un back in the 70's I had built a balsa 2 channel "trainer" plane with one of those little cox motors. It was just an R/E trainer with the motor set before takeoff and you were suppose to let go and fly her off and not land until the gas ran out. I spent so much time building that plane and it just looked so good I never had the nerve to actually fly the thing. It just hung from my light in the bedroom. Then in the early 80's I laid eyes on my first RC helicopter. i stopped and watched a bunch of guys flying them in a park in Phoenix AZ. Next thing you know, one of the guys was selling me his old Cricket. I actually flew that thing. nothing fancy but was able to take off, hover, fly around, and land. All without the aid of a gyro. Today I read that the Cricket is one of the hardest heli's to learn to fly. As things go, there was the wife, kid, then another kid, then another wife with 2 more kids.. well you get the picture, no more Cricket. Now the kids have kids of their own and the wife has an X in front of it which means RC aircraft, HERE I COME!!!!
