I made four small (20in / 50cm) gliders to try different wing shapes. All were made from a single sheet DTF. The LE&TE were sanded to resemble thin smoothed RM airfoil.

Small foam gliders (2 min 2 sec)

Description: The prototypes: (top) Spectral Owl, (left) S-Dude, (right) K-Dude, (bottom) W-Dude

This is the Spectral Owl with AUW of 22g. The wing itself was 10g and to get the CG right I had to add 12g located at the tip of the nose.

Can a good RM1 airfoil be designed? Yes, it can. According to the xflr5 analysis smoothed RM1 (RM1sm) can perform suspiciously well.

Below are the two RM1sm airfoils that I came up with that are quite close to the PW51 airfoil at Reynolds numbers in the 50000-150000 range. Notice the conventional rounded/smooth leading section and the flat sections aft of it.

The owl family is getting bigger. Well, at least in my head...

I sketched a few ideas about a new forward swept wing glider and come up with the 'Spectral Owl'
