Here we are... back after a short few months exodus from the scene..
Been busy building and such ya know..

Here's a few pics of a new build I did for another group member I met on this site..
we became friends after I purchased an orange RX from him and we met..
Thanks Joe..By the way did I mention I built this plane for free just to stay busy, and to help out a fellow flyer.....

So here's a good one for all to see.....
This is what happens when your wife thinks you should spend more time thinking of her, and less time building airplanes.....
OF COURSE assaulting the police is also a bad idea and will land you in JAIL..
She learned that lesson, last night.........PS
Don't pity ME....lets just all say a prayer for Dollar Bill and big brother Two Dollar Bill

RC retrievel using Robinson Heli.
You got to see this one forwarded to my by a friend, needs not much intro..
Guy loses plane in trees, calls heli company to get it for him...

Pilot and co-pilot have potty mouths so don't be offended.....

Here's where we finished off yesterday, almost done... -
Views: 72
Added a little flame theme for style.. -
Views: 75
Even went on to cut out a pilot and put windows in the cockpit -
Views: 72
I put toothpicks in the uprights to give some strength..and after covering, ended up pretty stout... -
Views: 81
Bottom of the wing got some attention and some more color..... -

Turned out pretty well I think... -

Gonna look good in the air... -

There it is...really close to done........ STAY TUNED...
So boys and ghouls we are back at the table again making strides to get another one done...and off the ground. so here's some peeks at the Two Dollar Bill.

Well after assembling the fuse and adding some reinforcing pieces along the fuse,
we are ready to move on, the next step will be deciding on the covering and colors..
but for now,,,small steps.....but here's another motor testing video of the Dollar Bill plane after adjusting the timing, power seems to come on sooner and boy does she howl now.....can't wait to get outside...dang rain

Cut a groove in the underside of the wing and used a carbon graphite tube as a stiffener, this time I did not epoxy it in place, but opted to use packing tape instead, can be re-used that way, just in case -
Views: 75
cut two 1-1/4 inch strips, cut the edges to a 45 and then glued in place, gives the fuse a little shape and strength. -
Views: 79
I added wing tips for looks, but I hear they do add to stability also -
Views: 74
Anyone ever use "Gorrilla Glue" ?? stuff expands like foam and really sets up strong, bonds almost anything, great on foam board, sparingly though.....it EXPANDS.....
So we received our new 2404 BL motor from one of our members,
the install was a snap, soldered the supplied bullet connectors and MAN I must say what a difference this made, the little plane just came ALIVE.......will now take to a nose up hover right out of your hand.

Unfortunately the weather has gone to crap and it's been raining constantly so no outdoor testing till next week

here's a little video of the motor test
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showa...0&d=1350768601
and another test also...http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showa...1&d=1350769333

New motor installed, preliminary testing in the house shows this to be a powerhouse on 2s 1000 batt, only have one prop to try so we can only speculate on difference...Thanks to many suppliers on this build.. Anixs, BethelFlyer,Hallstudio,Anton831,mt100, -

Shameless exploitation of HobbyKing products, note the package label laying on the table from the new HobbyKing motor, did I say HobbyKing ? -

So, as soon as the weather clears we look forward to a new flying experience...Till then we will continue to work on the "Two Dollar Bill" plane. We now know,..... what works...........and what don't.
So, with crappy weather upon me I thought I would let you all see the reason for the next series of thread material, The "Two Dollar Bill", this is same dimension as the first with several refinements in the wing and stabs...keep in mind again this is only the beginning, AGAIN...........
-
Views: 119
Widened the wing at the root and bigger tail feathers. We hope to use separate servos in the ailerons and have flaps in this one...... -
Views: 96
Reshaped the fuse to look "slightly" sportier...Dur The red line seen was the layout from the original Bill design...made bigger and better, wing... -
Views: 102
Still working on a better pattern for the cutouts in the wing. And have a smaller carbon fiber spar to install in the wing in this bird also.... -
Views: 106
Kind of my "Cartoon Version P-51".... More than adequate control surfaces, should work just fine...Not even thinking of anything less than 24g Turnigy and 3s LiPo....MORE POWER..... -
Views: 101
There we are, the end of one and the beginning of another...More to come......
So in this episode we finally install the last of the electronics and will try to get her off the ground, we hope...initial testing of the motor found that a 7x3 prop seems to give the best results...lackluster in power with a 2s it seems,Oh well..drive on..
So after that we went outside.
I know I promised to video but still do not have that capability, but, we can safely say that she does and can fly.
I only took a short hop down the street, but with only 10 g motor it took about a hundred feet to get in the air and remained stable and responsive as I gently set her back down, upon landing one of the crappy little light weight axles came loose and the plane kind of skidded to a stop in a circular fashion, no harm,...... test was a success, even if lackluster at best...
Still waiting on that 24g motor.........???, more to come later.

We opted to mount the aileron servo upside down to keep the rods as low as possible, Little dab of epoxy and Bam...mounted.. -
Views: 103
Kept the set up as simple as possible, even used Carbon Fiber rod for the push rods, light but really strong.. -
Views: 105
Decided to rob the Rx out of the Zero for now, found out the esc and servo are universal and factory pins match perfect, I guess that means plug and play ? -
Views: 108
Turnigy esc mounted other side of fuse, plays "Oh Susanna" when turned on...How cool, So I have the "Dollar Bill" plane finished...
So with the airframe finished up, we needed to address how we are going to get back on the ground safely, wheels are the answer....
So we fabricated some gear out of wire and installed it and then made some very light wheels out of foam..

Formed the wire and used a small piece of tubing as a support at the joint of the two wires at each point.. used small amount of epoxy in each tube to make solid.. -
Views: 94
Braced the gear against the back of the batt. compartment and epoxied it there too. -
Views: 94
After installing and letting it cure, it turns out they are very stable and rigid... -
Views: 93
Cut out double layers of foam and made it into wheels, used small piece of tubing as an axle tube and epoxied them together also..will color later.. -
Views: 99
Wheels installed, ready to go..Braced everything and mounted right over the wing spar for strength. -

There you have it, cheap light gear and wheels...
So here are some more pictures of the final product of a weeks worth of work....
some of you have followed me all the way, I have had a blast sharing with all of you and will be posting my maiden flight, good or bad for you as soon as my new servos get here and I am ready.

Well after careful consideration, I felt the little airplane was on a crash course with disaster before it even left the ground,
as I added components it became clear that foam board was too thin and flimsy to support any kind of weight and would snap in a dive.....SO what is the remedy...CARBON FIBER.....also we will get into weight reduction too.....and other fun stuff

and we will install this and Rx and install battery, and maybe make a cowl.......
trying to size up any unforeseen problems also takes a sharp eye, so be patient with me...

So before we fire up another episode, I must say that quite a few of you have visited here and viewed my progress. But alas, not one soul has commented good or bad....
I need to hear from you what you think, and tell me truthfully, should it be pink or more shaped like a Mustang or what ?? spit it out....I have a few planes, all tried and true, but Never tried to scratch build one so just keep the laughter to a dull roar....Continue Reading

So here's another episode of the Dollar Bill show....
This time we will work on the control surfaces..
After deciding how much control surface to have on each area, we mark and cut only through the paper covering, at the hinge area, on the bottom, being careful to leave the paper on the top surface intact..

Well I figured it was time to build something, so I had my daughter pick me up some foam board from the Dollar store today..
Didn't have a clue what I wanted to make, It just needs to be cool..
Stared at plans and pics most afternoon and came up with this....
It's not a perfect design but, like I said, the first one........

I mean, How tough can this be ?? Get some foam board and half of a brain.... -
Views: 119
Find your center, and decide on your dimensions.. I layed out on a 2 to 3 rule, roughly 20x30 is sheet size so I went with that -
Views: 102
For every 3 inches in wing you have 2 inches in length, hence 2 to 3......... or 20 x 30 -
Views: 104
The design will be refined a little on the next one, BUT this took only about an hour to lay out cut and epoxy, remember to strip the paper only where the glue goes, and no excess anywhere... -
Views: 107
So there you have it, My very first attempt at scratch building and we have,....Well, I hadn't thought of a name, Maybe..."Dollar Bill"...what do you all think of that one ?? -
Views: 130
So here's the first "Dollar Bill" I ever made....lol obviously not finished, but open for feedback....what next ???
J3 Cub Testing
Well, all went as I had hoped it would, the cub will now turn on a dime and handles very well. Sorry I don't have a video camera at this time or I would include video as well.
It went from hardly steering at all to full proportional steering in under 20 minutes and cost less than two dollars..What an improvement...More updates to come.

So as you all know, there is nothing worse than a tail dragger with a fixed tail wheel...
So I thought I would walk you through the conversion on mine to a steerable wheel assembly.....Continue Reading

Another day of fun
So yesterday we received our new Sky LiPo 7.4 1000 2s batteries great deal from club member..Thanks..and now waiting on new(to me) charger, soon I will use new age technology in my flying toys, honestly I have thought NiMh was the shizznat since it came out..BUT Lithium is REALLY the @#$% I can't believe I didn't go this way long ago..Oh that's right I was burning Nitro instead of volts..
Well any way, Thanks to the generosity of several people I am better set up now,
except I am still brushed in by motors..have not stepped up and went to real power..but I hope to, soon, ..funds ..you know.. but we save pennies and soon we spend.......lol
