What a weekend for flying. I started Saturday off with the 180 CFX, 360 CFX, UMX Icon, Spedix S250, and the UMX SBach. I didn't have the Spedix set up right for rattitude and ended up breaking 2 props in a horrific crash in some grass. Then I had to do yard work and when I was done my thumbs were too shaky for flying, even on Sunday. The only thing I could fly comfortably was my new UMX PT-17 and I loved it. I put 6 batteries through it on Sunday while taking a nice long breaks in between each flight so I wouldn't kill the motor.

Monday I was back out with Bob S. this time in the windiest park in the area. He picked up a Spedix S250 too and mine was ready to go again. I stayed in self leveling mode this time and I thought I had some descent speed. Then Bob took off and showed me how it was really done. He set all 3 banks for high rates and was incredible right up until he lost orientation because of the sun about 3 minutes in and plowed it into the asphalt. He broke 4 props and two battery straps. Plus a motor plug came loose. But when we put new props on, it was good a new. The Spedix 250 BNF is an incredibly durable frame. If I broke mine, I would get a new one. After the quad fun we flew a Night VisionAire around in the wind for a few batteries. I landed once without any forward or backwards movement when the wind kicked up. Bob did this snap roll right into a huge gust of wind and the plane came to a dead stop at the end of the roll. Then Bob showed off with his Edge...Continue Reading

As usual, we were going a review at the LHS and I got to try something out...then ended up bringing it home. I need to invest in a good FPV system now as our started Spektrum kit is not the best. I think I might go with a Black Pearl system on a Tripod instead of goggles. I'm onle of those people who fogs them up easily even with anti fog stuff on the glass.

It was an interesting Sunday of flying. I did some manual work around the house on Saturday. The first thing I took out Sunday was the Blade 300 CFX to show off at the LHS. Piros were good. Loops were good. During my first rainbow my left thumb started twitching uncontrollably left and right and that prompted an immediate landing. I was able to get it back up for some hovering and orientation practice to run the battery down to storage, but no more helis for the day. I did break out the old profile foamy for the second time in a week.

Previously I'd fly the foamy on high rates only. With other planes I've picked up with precision and 3D modes, I've learned that switching between the two at the right times helps depending on what you want to do. So I started using low rates to line up for another attempt at prop hanging and then switched to high rates to help keep it in place. It was probably the longest I've ever hovered. 10 seconds isn't very long compared to the guys at the field who just hover in place for an entire battery, but it is the first time I felt I understood the control and not just guessing at it.

After that the LHS let me fly the little UMX brushed PT-17 from E-Flite. It is a surprisingly fun to fly staggered bipe. It handles better than the Champ and Sport Cub S. If it was RTF, it would make a great beginner plane. The rudder and elevator have a lot of action. The ailerons are a bit slow when rolling, but 2 out of isn't bad for a relaxing little flight...Continue Reading

The summer weather is here and my son wanted to finish watching a TV show. I said I had batteries charged for the Dominus TR. He said he would go out if I went out with him. That was a no brainer. Then he wanted me to start taking video jumping off the tree in the backyard. I switched to the slow motion option for fun and the videos were not half bad. Good enough for me to share. His final jump is my favorite, but I love the sound of the truck hitting something in slow motion.

I can say this is definitely visible at night and it flies well. Actually flying in the dark and not just dusk is somewhere past 4 minutes.

After playing with it at the LHS over the weekend we threw together a quick review. What a great little quad.

I finished eating dinner with my family last night and after cleaning up, I stuck my head outside. It was still light out. Cloudy, but no wind and plenty of time to fly. Time to keep some charged batteries lying around. I did have two ready to go, so the Adagio and UMX Icon it was. The best part was how green the grass was at the field. When I was there last week it was still brown.

Here is the latest video from my LHS. If you are looking at FPV, he goes into what options are available and explains a lot. Enjoy!

When I walked into the LHS this weekend two of the regulars were drooling over a used IMax B6 Duo with a MaxAmps 12V 575W 47A power supply. They spent too much time drooling and I picked it up with the PS for $100 as a spare. After charging my Q500 batteries ( at 1C from a balance charge in only 45 minutes, it found a spot on the charging table instead of the travel box where I was going to put it. I dedicated 2 ports on the HiTec X4 to the the E-flite 3 wire balance/charge combo leads for the backyard batteries. I didn't realize how much these would improve my charge times on the larger lipos at 1C, but if the X4 ever goes I am getting another HV charger. I have to charge a 6S 5000 mah for the CZC this weekend. I'm hoping that is under an hour at 1C too.

Those who know me know I spend way too much time at the LHS. I was there last night drooling over the new Blade 360 CFX. Yeah, I bought the battery and started payments on it but that is a different story. There were two other people looking at it when the one guy starts talking about how he is ready for it. Naturally those of us who have been at it a few years ask him about his experience. His reply went something like "I've gotten really good at flying the 200 SRX. I can do all the orientations and I have about 12 flights on it. " . At that point we all jumped in with a big "No, this is not the heli you are looking for". He thought the 360 had auto-leveling and would fly similar to his FP, at which point we found out he hasn't even flown in advanced mode. We steered him towards flight sims and the Nano CPX which took me 4 months and 100+ flights before I could fly it controlled. And that was with the mCXP2 and MSR experience. If he bought it, I could see his first flight going like this...http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6e5_1360811236

I was at the LHS and a guy came in looking for an escape. We had no idea what he was talking about. Finally we figured out that he meant a speed controller. He insisted that everyone calls them that online. I've been flying a few years now and have never heard it that anywhere. He went on and on about how on YouTube and Facebook people say it all the time and, of course, how he was a very skilled pilot who is knowledgeable in all things RC .

So what do you call yours? There is a poll if you click the title and open this post.

OK. I was hanging out at the LHS last night and a lot of Taigen 1/16th scale tanks came in. We ended up playing...
Just Playing - Taigen King Tiger RC Tank Test & FPV Quad Chase (1 min 18 sec)

I ended up coming home with the Tiger I and my son and I ran it for a long, long time. Even though mine is plastic, it works just as good as the all metal one in the video. And it's a lot lighter. I think my son would have had trouble carrying the King Tiger.

I've been meaning to take an inventory recently of all my RC stuff. I'm not home, but I decided to see how much I could remember and put together a list of everything that is in current working condition, meaning I could grab it and go out the door. I know I am missing some things too.

My wife has been bragging about my RC skills and collection to other parents during my son's basketball practice. I guess she gave up complaining after I filled the basement rooms and took over parts of two or three rooms on the first floor.

--edit--
Actually, since I've start fixing and building things, I've been applying what I've learned to fixing a lot around the house. She does appreciate that. It is something I spend a lot of time doing with my son. Plus the aerial photos are great.

Well I picked up the Yuneec Q500 Typhoon last night, but the weather looks like I will be staying indoors for a few days. That's fine because I have to fix the DHC-2 Beaver Island Wings and get the floats on it for some snow flying.

I did start off with heli's and love flying them. The new Blade 360 has caught my eye and I am thinking about getting one. The problem is where to put it. It might just fit on a shelf.

Cal assembled most of the quad frame himself. The anti-vibration mounts were a bit tricky, so I had to help a little. We were about to start soldering when I decided we need some small bullet connectors for the motors to make it easier to change them out as we need to. It's going to be below 0 degrees out tonight so no rush on finishing it.

Anyone else coming to the local Fun Fly/Auction at Wyoming Valley Sports Dome tomorrow (flyer attached)? My son got a FPV vapor and profile foamy for Christmas. I can't wait to see him fly them.
