My buddy dropped off his TF 60 sized Corsair with a broken rudder...don't understand why he likes to flip his Corsair over on landings...oh well...so I built him one he will NOT be able to break, no matter how many 'flips' he tries on landings

So from the scraps (on the left) to the finished product (on the right)...now to Epoxy that puppy in!

Test flew this bird today....NICE....loves to respond to your commands and gets there in a hurry......here are some pics....

Also finished assembling the T-28 and hope to test fly it tomorrow!

Just about finished her up....only waiting on the receiver from Silas, installing the cowl and balancing her.....hope this one doesn't require any dead lead like the last one (4.4oz).

I found the extra trim sheets that are supplied and DEAD ON in the color department! I trimmed the bottom cowling with their gray and you can't tell the difference between the covering and the trim! Good job and the same for the green!

And yes, that is a E-flite T-28 I'm assembling for my bud Lee.....

Whereas I am assembling my second VQ P-40 a new set of retracts were needed so I picked up a set of 60-120 retracts from E-flight. They were an almost 'drop in' installation!

Got the wing joined and am currently putting in the fuselage servos. Going to send in the receiver for checking by Horizon as I am using it currently to set up the servos....and it works 'sometimes' and 'sometimes' it doesn't!!! Guess that explains why the first P-40 did a nose dive!

Well I think I have recovered from that P-40 crash....I bought another one from JB Hobbies (thanks James) and have started working on it. I discovered something while putting in the flap and aileron servos....using that same receiver that was in the previous (RIP) P-40, I was adjusting the servo throw, centering, etc. and at times it wouldn't work!

Plug and unplug and sometimes the servo would come alive, other times -ZIP! So I'm beginning to get a strong feeling to send that puppy in to Horizon and see what they have to say.

Took a week off to fly down to Mobile, Alabama where my youngest son got married - I'm so happy for him...his bride is a real winner and I couldn't of asked for a better one!

It rained in Arizona!!! About a 1/2" - and that is a lot of rain for here on Sunday so Monday I was worried about the runway (we fly off dirt)....but it was OK...........................so I TEST FLEW a Phoenix PC9 on 4 and 5 cells ...prop was wrong choice (Rimfire 46 and APC 10/7) but I did manage to get two flights in....the 5 cell was much better than the 4 cell battery, but still not very good....will try some different props Wednesday!

Then today I got a Carbon-Z T-28 from Horizon = but for a friend Man that box is HUGE!!!! Hope to get that ready for flying early next week as my wife in going in for some surgery on Thursday and will stay overnight. MAYBE able to fly on Monday - we will see how she feels.....

Build, err, assembled a P-40 for a friend...nice plane but like most scale planes, it takes a bit longer than normal plus it is a warbird and that makes it close to my heart.

First flight returned the ARF to ARF status in less than 30 seconds! Total loss of control Here is the video

Weather being good, a test flight was in order.

First attempt at taking off resulted in an aborted take off just about the time full power was being applied. It seemed the Dauntless decided to make a left turn - a sharp left turn no less, so power reduced and as the plane turned left it skidded and bent the right landing gear. We straightened that out and our next attempt resulted in a relatively short flight with the engine quitting after a low pass - perhaps an overheated engine???

Anyway, the quick decent followed by a late flair resulted in TWO landing gears bent! Cowl suffered some scrapes but that was the extent of the damage.

Took the plane out for the first time to run the new DLE35RA....wouldn't start! Found out some solder flux was plugging the fuel line (I put barbs on the brass tubes). Once that was cleaned out....wow!!!

It's getting close...the plane is getting heavier and there are less parts sitting on the work bench!

Good news - bad weather, forecast for Sunday windy; Monday windy with chance of rain and Tuesday windy....that is good so I won't rush to finish this bird. I figure maybe Wednesday or Friday....new engine so one day is needed to run that puppy and tune it, run a tank and see what falls off the plane and another day to 're-do' all those things that went wrong.

Finally put the receiver in and boy is there a mess of extensions! But I knew that and happy to report there is room in the fuse for all that.

Glued on the landing gear doors - they look good but the question is how long will they STAY ON

Well I'm done to the 'punch list' of about15 items - all small, but necessary. Coated the two elevator mounts with epoxy and added a servo reverser back there so I can free up one channel in the Rx for the Opti-Kill gizmo. I also added the ignition battery and made mounts for the two switches. Now to finish work on the bomb

Been working on the fuselage getting the tail feathers on, installing the engine, tank and servos for throttle, rudder and of course elevators. Rethinking the servos for the elevators - might want stronger ones back there BUT there is always the CG shift when you add heavier servos. Engine fits almost perfectly (DLE 35RA) with about 1/4" needed to be removed in order to fit the muffler in place.

The wing is finally completed...except for mounting the bomb - and all those extensions! BUT it all works (for now anyway.

Gap in one of the wing panels is a bit large, but they supply some black rubber tubing to fill that gap....the trouble is, the OTHER side is almost gapless! So now I have to go back and create a gap

I'm using a three wire disconnect to ease my field assembly...it helps some!

Just figured out I'm using all of my 8 channels on the RX and don't have a spot for a transmitter kill switch

Got the retracts in with the only problem being fishing the retract servo lead on the right retract to find its way to the center hole so it can exit the wing. That hole should be made larger because it will have 8 leads coming out of it! To reduce that number I used a "Y" connector for the retracts...still it is a mess

On to the wing...aileron servo (standard size) mounted on aileron hatch without any problems. Need a long extension to reach the receiver....18" should do the trick.

Next was the flaps....three servos needed - one in the center wing section, two in the outer wing panels....got to watch the orientation of the servo arms as all three have to work together.....

Got the retrats (cost extra, they are electric) in without too much trouble but can't go with the supplied gear doors as they stick out too far from the wing.

Going to have to change that as I think gear doors make this look better.

Just had to do it....bought a VQ Dauntless at the AMA Convention last month! Couldn't wait to start, so I did

Picked up a DLE 35RA for it and had to buy 11 SERVOS!!! This bird has two servos ailerons, two for dive brakes, three for flaps PLUS electric retracts - all in the wing!

Well I'm happy to report the plane has been finished given to its owner and a happy person he is....sort of....Maybe I should have followed my intuition and put that switch in the floor board instead of under the back seat. At that location it is difficult to reach!

Our first flights were uneventful, but the engine was giving us some dead stick training so Ron was called upon to adjust the needles and boy did he do a great job - once the clunk on the feed line was reattached!

So John is now happy and has a couple of flights on it. Here are some pics....

Coming down to the near end....still have some things to do before it is done..

First of all I love the RC Workstation I picked up at the AMA Convention - going to do a "Update" to the previous article I wrote as there are some improvements worth discussing.

Getting the two batteries ready - wrapped in foam and 'sealed' with some tape used to wrap packages - clear and sticky! Two packs - both 2000 NiMh , one for the radio, the other for the ignition. One of those packs is supposed to go in the floor of the fuselage and as you can see, it doesn't fit! So all wrapped up it is sitting next to the tank!

Wing panels fit! Love that hardware - nice and strong. And it is even painted No trouble getting the struts to match up with the fuselage.

Cowl was next....had to move the engine mount forward 1/4" for the prop to clear the front of the cowl. Might have to convince the owner to order a new cowl as I don't like the crack in the one he has (shipping damage).

Then comes the headache - putting all those wires, extensions, and plugs into the receiver and man it looks bad...the good part is the rear seat hides the wires from the front and an 'cover' on top hides the battery, receiver and wires from view!

Note how the rear seat is prevented from moving forward because the switches have leads only so long!...Continue Reading

This bird is coming right along....got the pull-pull for the rudder done (twice; first time was wrong - STUPID servo moved because I was too cheap to turn on the radio freezing the rudder servo in neutral!). Then reinstalled the wires....first put a 48" 2-56 threaded rod in from the tail of the fuselage, followed by some inner flexible tubing from Sullivan. The removed the wire and fed the pull-pull cables through the tubes. Removed the tubes and the cables are nice and straight and not wound around and push rods.

Tried to get the springs tighten on the tail wheel...some guys do such a nice job of winding the excess wire around the spring....me, I just bend it and hope.

Installed a good switch in the 'rear passenger's seat' - a Miracle switch with two switches - one for radio, the other for ignition. Glued the back of the seats to the seat itself with some craft glue - sort of like R/C 56 but a whole lot cheaper.

Put all the hardware on the wing for the Jury Struts and even plugged the wing panels on the fuse and tighten everything up nice and snug....Continue Reading

Interesting day....got some things done on the Cub: mounted the tail; it only takes 4 bolts! The wires that help the tailfeathers went on pretty well; one was way too long - the other perfect! Go figure....moved on to the landing gear: LOTS of nuts and bolts. Funny how many of the 6-32 bolts required a METRIC wrench to tighten as the SAE sizes would be either too big or too small!...Continue Reading
