I've been working with the DX7 for a couple years. I've sought out programing for dual aileron servos and dual flap servos while giving the maximum functionality. I hoped to be able to have three position flaps while still being able to use aileron differential and perhaps have some independent spoileron/flaperon function.

I've got some different programs that I have worked out. Some evolved from programs offered by Spektrum employees and I will give due credit where I can. I will keep this closed till I get all my current programs posted and then open it up for comment and discussion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DX7 - Flap 1

Dual Aileron/Dual 3 Position Flaps - No Aileron Differential - No Spoileron/Flaperon

This was originally from Mike McConville. It was for a single flap servo setup used in the E-Flite RV-9 and T-34. I added P-Mix 6 for the second flap servo and the Gear to Gear mix to inhibit the gear switch.

Right Aileron servo goes to Aileron channel - Left Aile servo goes to AUX 2
Right flap servo to Flap channel - Left Flap to Gear channel

SYSTEM SETUP

[Input Select]

AUX2: INH
AUX2 TRIM: INH

FLAP: SYSTEM
FLAP TRIM: INH or ACT - Active trim moves flaps equally via Flap Rocker

[WING TYPE]

FLAPERON: OFF - Off cancels the differential screen from function mode
V-TAIL: OFF
DELTA: OFF

FUNCTION MODE

[FLAP SYS.]

DX7 - Flap 2

Dual Aileron/Dual 3 Position Flaps - No Aileron Differential - No Spoileron/Flaperon

Right Aileron servo goes to Aileron channel - Left Aile servo goes to Flap channel
Right flap servo to AUX 2 - Left Flap to Gear channel

SYSTEM SETUP

[Input Select]

AUX2: INH
AUX2 TRIM: INH

FLAP: System
FLAP TRIM: INH or ACT - Active trim moves flaps equally via Flap Rocker

[WING TYPE]

FLAPERON: OFF - Off cancels the differential screen from function mode
V-TAIL: OFF
DELTA: OFF

FUNCTION MODE

[FLAP SYS.]

------------------ FLAP ----------- ELEV
NORM ------ UP 100% ----------- 0 ----- Adjust Flap % according to your needs. If you want some elevator mixed in, do it here
MID ------------------ 0% ----------- 0
LAND ------- DN 100% ----------- 0

AUTO: INH

Program Mixes
----------------------------- CHANNEL ------ SW --- +RATE -- −RATE ------ OFFSET
[PROG. MIX 1] ---- GEAR ⪫ GEAR ---- ON --- −100% --- −100% -------- -0- -------- Inhibits Gear Switch
[PROG. MIX 5] ---- FLAP ⪫ AUX2 ------ ON --- +100% --- +100% -------- -0- -------- for 2nd Flap Servo
[PROG. MIX 6] ----- AILE ⪫ GEAR ----- ON --- +100% --- +100% -------- -0- -------- for 2nd Aileron Servo

DX7 - Flap 3

Dual Ailerons W/Differential - Dual 3 Position Flaps

This and the following programs use Flaperon ON. Flaperon ON automatically mixes aileron channel to Flap/Aux 1 channel.
My ultimate goal was to have full use of the flaperon/spoileron programing with the Flap System screen and aileron differential with the Differential screen plus fully independent three position flaps hopefully allowing different combinations of Crow and/or flaperons with flaps.

Right Aileron servo goes to Aileron channel - Left Aile servo goes to Flap/Aux1 channel
Right flap servo to AUX 2 - Left Flap to Gear channel

SYSTEM SETUP

[Input Select]

AUX2: 3P Switch
AUX2 TRIM: ACT/INH - your choice - Active adjusts both flaps equally

FLAP: System or INH - System allows Flaperon/Spoileron with Flap 3P switch and with Flap Rocker.
INH isolates 3P switch to flaps and disables the Flap System screen. You still have Spoileron/Flaperon function with the Flap Trim Rocker.

FLAP TRIM: ACT - Active trim gives flaperons/spoilerons with the Flap Rocker. This only effects ailerons.

[WING TYPE]

FLAPERON: ON - Enables the Differential screen in function mode
V-TAIL: OFF
DELTA: OFF

FUNCTION MODE

[FLAP SYS.]

Zeros in flap column gives no aileron movement from flap switch.
Positive or negative values give spoilerons or flaperons from flap switch.

Flap travel must be adjusted via mechanical setup and via the Travel Adjust and Sub Trim screens.

You can set elevator compensation for flaps here.

-------------- FLAP ------- ELEV
NORM ------ 0% ----------- 0 ----
MID ---------- 0% ----------- 0 ----
LAND ------- 0% ----------- 0 ----

AUTO: INH

[DIFFERENTIAL]
FLAPERON
DIFF. - Set % for desired aileron differential

Program Mixes
----------------------------- CHANNEL ------ SW --- +RATE -- −RATE ------ OFFSET
[PROG. MIX 1] ---- GEAR ⪫ GEAR ---- ON --- −100% --- −100% -------- -0- --- Inhibits Gear Switch
[PROG. MIX 5] ---- AUX 2 ⪫ GEAR ---- ON --- +100% --- +100% -------- -0- --- Flap Servos on AUX2 and Gear

The three previous programs were worked out over a year ago. Since then I have made several attempts at achieving by goal of full use of spoileron/flaperon programing plus independent three position flaps. I tried all sorts of things but always fell short. I got tantalizingly close on a number of tries but there was always some fatal flaw. The most recent failure did everything I wanted but if you didn't use the correct sequence of two switches for the three position flaps you wound up with different flap positions, or in another try, one flap was over driven at full flaps. Neither was acceptable of course.

A few weeks ago I started fresh and spent most of a Saturday working on it and am finally happy to report success. I even worked out two different options. The end result turned out to be surprisingly simple. One thing that may have kept me from success is an odd quirk of the one Gear to Gear mix that is common to both Flap 4 and Flap 5. This only works if this mix is in either PMix 5 or PMix 6. We know that 5 and 6 are unique in carrying trim from master to slave and I suspect it has something to do with this.

Though the DX7 is getting old and the new range of DX7s, DX8, DX9, and DX18 offer so much more there will no doubt be many DX7's changing hands and a few holdouts that will hopefully benefit from this.

The original version of Flap-5 was posted Aug 30, 2013 and is now obsolete. After posting I kept working on it to try and resolve the problem with the AUX2 trim. What follows is the revised version which fixes the problems with having AUX2 trim active. This was accomplished by rearranging the P-mixes.

This is my favorite of all my efforts and does everything I could have hoped for with the old DX7.

DX7 - Flap 5

Dual Ailerons With Flaperon/Spoileron and Differential - Independent Dual 3 Position Flaps

This program does the exact same thing as Flap 4 but uses the AUX2 switch instead of the gear switch

Right Aileron servo goes to Aileron channel - Left Aile servo goes to Flap/Aux1 channel
Right flap servo to AUX 2 - Left Flap to Gear channel

SYSTEM SETUP

[Input Select]

AUX2: 2P Switch
AUX2 TRIM: ACT/INH - Your choice. Active trim allows trimming both flaps together. You can use flap trim for Reflex or negative flaps if your flap hinging allows this.

FLAP: System

FLAP TRIM: ACT/INH - Your choice. Active trim gives flaperons/spoilerons with the Flap Rocker. This only effects ailerons.

[WING TYPE]

FLAPERON: ON - Enables the Differential screen in function mode
V-TAIL: OFF
DELTA: OFF

FUNCTION MODE

[FLAP SYS.]

Flap Switch gives full 3 position control of spoileron/flaperon in Flap System screen. Flap Rocker works independent of flap switch.

Up or Down values give spoilerons or flaperons from flap switch.

Elevator compensation here only works in...Continue Reading
