In regards to Ultra-light flying verses RC flying........

For me:

RC flying is way more fun because my ass isn’t on the line.

Ultralight flying is like long periods of grandeur and amazement, thrown in with a few minutes of sheer terror that something bad is about to happen.

When you fly ultra-lights, non-cool people see your plane, and then proceed to tell your wife to get good insurance because “he is certainly going to die”.

When you fly ultra-lights it’s like you are a bottom feeder, the dumbest of the pilot world. "Real" pilots call your plane a flying lawn chair. They have laughed at me for having a GPS on board as if “how can you get lost in a plane that slow?”
“Real” pilots tell others that; “Those ultra-lights are dropping like flies”. That may be true but at least they don’t need 2000’ to land, and the crash synopsis usually doesn’t include the terminology; “Charred bodies” or “Spam in a Can”.
The first thing “Real” pilots usually say to me is “Ever thought about getting some more ratings?” …. As if; how could anyone be satisfied with this kind of flying?
I have radioed my intentions per all stated normal flight practices and had “Real” pilots bust right in front of me on final approach…. This; just because their plane is faster and they don’t want to wait. No radio warning or anything. Just bullying. No apologies. Nothing. (Of course I had to go around the pattern to avoid their wake turbulence)

I like having control of my LEDs so i use a brushed ESC to turn them off and on. If you use a channel with a knob to turn or a slider, then it is like a dimmer switch.

I solder in a extra JST connector onto the brushless ESC..... then i plug the brushed ESC into that. If I am flying in the day time i can unplug it.

My Ernie wing mid-aired and it split in half...
It went back together simple enough... but there was some places missing.... easy fix....
The red marker was to tell me where not to waste glue.

and how we learned to fight it.



In April 1942 thirty-six Zeros attacking a British naval base at Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), were met by about sixty Royal Air Force aircraft of mixed types, many of them obsolete. Twenty-seven of the RAF planes went down: fifteen Hawker Hurricanes (of Battle of Britain fame), eight Fairey Swordfish, and four Fairey Fulmars. The Japanese lost one Zero.

Five months after America's entry into the war, the Zero was still a mystery to U.S. Navy pilots. On May 7, 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Sea, fighter pilots from our aircraft carriers Lexington and Yorktown fought the Zero and didn't know what to call it. Some misidentified it as the German Messerschmitt 109.

A few weeks later, on June 3 and 4, warplanes flew from the Japanese carriers Ryujo and Junyo to attack the American military base at Dutch Harbor in Alaska's Aleutian archipelago. Japan's attack on Alaska was intended to draw remnants of the U.S. fleet north from Pearl Harbor, away from Midway Island, where the Japanese were setting a trap. (The scheme ultimately backfired when our Navy pilots sank four of Japan's first-line aircraft carriers at Midway, giving the United States a major turning-point victory).

Part of the evolution of the GeoBat.
This plane (at least the 26" Version) is capable of sliding on grass to take off and land.
The first PDF uploaded here is the 36" version which actually has not been proven yet. The airframe is proven, just not the Slider Part of it

I had a computer glitch with the 26" version and am going to post it up ASAP.

This is a Blog not a Normal build thread so:
Dont get your itty bitty feelings hurt if I delete a post along the way to keep the focus on the build.

As of this writing there are 3 SliderBats flying and everyone loves'em!
Dont even think about building this plane if your not ready to embrace a 3 axis stability system or receiver. It makes a world of a difference and will fly like crap without it!.

Much more info to follow.... questions are welcome, just remember rule #1

My Saito 80 bearings went bad and upon dissassembly the rear main bearing fell apart.
The main rear bearing outer race was stuck. Several hand tool methods were tried to no avail.
I had to come up with another plan... I measured the diameter of the ID of the stuck race... then cut a piece of 3/8 square key stock a little oversize.
I welded a dowel pin to the middle of that.....
Then I went to the lathe and turned it to size and tapered it for easy welding.
Then I dropped the dowel pin thru the front of the motor and wedged the cross bar into the race.
I Tig welded the bar to the Race on both sides..

after it cooled, I simply tapped it on the workbench and the stuck race came right out..... Skore!

I had this 12 Volt fan and wanted a way to keep my FPV transmitter cool when using it on the bench testing stuff. So I built this thing up from scrap material at work.... I'm pretty happy with it... It's also great for drying paint and glues , etc.
It's all pretty basic, I'll let the pictures tell the story...

I got to keep it from the wife as she wants to dry her nails with it


I drilled some holes in the base to hang it up when not needed...
The red thing is a funnel I adapted to direct the air a little better...(glued on with shoe goo)
It lays flat for storage.

Of course you could use wood or whatever for the base and such....
Throw one together, you'll like it

As great as Walbro Carbs are ,I have always hated the throttle lever. It is too close to the center of rotation. I modded mine as presented here and it works so much better.

It made the throttle sweep match up to a typical servo throw.
It raised the ball joint higher to clear the engine mount bolts....
and I twisted the arm to be in line with the pushrod....

I thought I would share my trick of how to get better contact when soldering Ultra Deans connectors.
First off, I use a decent 40W Weller soldering iron ( I welded the custom stand)
Then I use a tiny drop of this liquid flux....
The wires come pre-tinned and they are fat in diameter...
I take a metal plate and a small mallet and beat the end of the pre-soldered wire flat...
Then solder it and heat shrink it up...
You will find even the heat shrink will fit better...
Instead of just the quadrant of the wire actually touching the Deans connector , this whole big flattened wire contacts.

The Snyder Fighter was born when I gave Lloyd Snyder a Hobby King Motor , ESC and servos and said "Go build a airplane".

A week later he came back with this wing

Yes there are a Hundred other wing builds on RCG's......
But people started asking for plans for THIS one so here we go.....

There will be much more to come in time so check back later.

This plane requires a LOT of expo!

My recipe for Smoke Oil

1 part Super-Dri smoke oil
1 part Walmart automatic Transmission fluid
1 part Kerosine

This creates awesome smoke with excellent Hang time. Way better and cheaper than just the Super-Dri smoke oil by itself.

I'm not a big fan of super clear canopies. I like just a trace of tint so you can see the canopy. Sometimes you'll see a plane with a canopy so clear ,at a distance you cant even see it. That's why I do this.

Years ago I picked up this single burner hot plate at a Yard sale. I use it to keep the water temp high so the dye can do it's deed. You must heat the water!
