Picked this one up on ebay and it came in today. I have always wanted a first edition run of the 501 nitro and I finally got it. First pic is the one from the ebay auction and the rest are from tonight after restoration. I added the Novarossi CX .12 but everything else was pretty much there and new. It was only missing the header and silicon tube coupler. These bikes are very different than the later 501's, I didn't know it till tonight but the brake caliper is alloy and the rear body mount brace is alloy I knew about the tank and other parts, very cool they should have never stopped making these. It even has the alloy head stock with bearings. Its all clear now what happen with TT and NF. This thing is a real machine for a stock bike. I will be placing this one on the shelf for looking at

Budget minded nitro for you guys. Only upgrades are frame spacers, engine mounts, 13t clutch bell, TTN head stock, later std. dual swing arm and front brake pads/rotor no rear brake yet but it really doesnt need it with stock gearing. Should make for a nice tight runner. Im also going to use budget servos a JR st126 high torque($40) for brake and throttle duty a feetech FT5478M ($25) low profile light weight for steering.

Will be updating post as nears completion.
ok I got the bike all broke in and everything is great, the stock gearing is not bad at all and will still haul ass. The stock pipe is not near as restrictive as I thought and the engine will reach full rpm without issue. I love this bike its very easy to drive fast without fear of crashing, lots of stability.

Ok I want to start off by saying I have been running these HPI engines for a couple of years in 4 different bikes and I love them. The HPI .18 is an excellent alternative to an expensive engine . There are many options for what kind of power and starting system your looking for. The engines are very affordable, easy to find and very cheap to rebuild so run the heck out of it. Another advantage is that the low end needle is located just where it is on the Picco so low end tuning is easy also it is a three shim head so you can tune for even more power when broke in. Now the main thing I want to explain is that these engines only turn around 30-32k RPM compared to the Picco's 37-40k but the horsepower is 2.2 compared to Picco's 1.2 so in order to get the advantages of all that HP you need to gear your bike much taller than stock. A 13t clutch bell and a 10/26 micro drive will give you good results and it will not bog the engine at all. The Torque Works swingarm allows me to run a 10/25 micro drive on it but a 10/25 on a standard NF swingarm is not advisable because you will have to shorten the chain and that puts the center of the tire to close to the inner swingarm causing it to rub at high speeds so the 10/26 is optimal for NF bikes and puts the wheel right were it needs to be. The 28 and 27 sprockets will work also. A cheaper way to gear up is to use an aftermarket 14 or 15t clutch bell and keep stock sprocket gearing, I will be testing some larger clutch bells with...Continue Reading

Ran the bike today for the first time. Idled one tank and ran 2 on the ground. It really has a different sense of power, you can feel the thumping of the engines power when near it and the sound is amazing. I can tell Im going to love this bike, I just hope I can control myself not to crash it too much, no crashes today and the handling is on point, good lean angles, very easy to control over rough patches, confidence inspiring...I will make a vid asap...

Battery installation went really well. This battery is a 700mah LiFe 6.6v it only weighs 40 grams or 1.7 oz. its 2.64 oz lighter than a regular 6v 5 cell and the total weight of the bike RTR w/o fuel is 1866 grams(65.25oz), only 15 grams heavier than my RG EVO 3 nitro @ 1851g(65oz) also with a LiFe and 4 grams heavier than the 701 with a LiFe @ 1862. To me this is amazing, an old TTN with a .18 that's practically the same weight as an RG and 701. Im getting some of these batteries for all my nitro bikes. I really was not trying to make this a light weight bike, it just happened that way from the parts I used, I could make it even lighter if I wanted to but this is good enough, its going to be hard to keep the front end down as it is. Engine is good now so I been doing a little work on the TTN this weekend. Im now waiting on the li-fe battery and should be ready for some test runs soon.

Its way better than I expected once sorted, The bike is unbelievably connected to the road and inspires confidence with your driving. The brakes are surprisingly very good, more than enough. The wheels are on the heavy side but its all focused outwards for unrealized stability. It has a low C.G. feel and great lean angles. You can drift easily like a fast electric and it will not fail you, it is the most forgiving feeling bike I have ever driven. It has nothing in common with any other NF nitro before it and is next level.

I routed the battery lead around the exhaust and between the plates. I soldiered on an extension to get a perfect length instead of using an extension with connectors. I doubled up on the shrink around the manifold. The receiver connection is the on/off switch.


I have since changed to a 700mah LiFe battery and lost 2.64 oz of weight from the bike..WOW!!!!

Servos came in today and I been at it ever since, this bike is so different than anything Im use to. It is very simple but just different. NF has done a good job. It has less parts and is much lighter than a normal nitro bike. The engine pops out in a few seconds its easy and fast to remove with just 2 bolts holding it in. The engine has to be moved out of the way to change the spur. All I need now are a set of 200s and some paint.



Its been brought to my attention that if you mount the steering servo inside the plates you will need to use a servo arm that is standard thickness and has the arm positioned to the outer edge of the spline shaft. Thick or clamp on type servo arms will not work and do not clear the middle servo when turning. you can use them but mount the servo outside the plate if you do.

The upper and rider is straight from the SB-5 mold. Its tricky to get just right and trimming for the exhaust. It was easier fitting this than it was the lower. I also want to note that this is not the ordinary lexan NF uses, it is much thicker and higher quality, its good stuff, same for the lower too.

Today I trimmed and fit the lower body, its almost the same body that's made for the 509e race but just a little wider towards the front to fit around the fuel tank, its made for this bike. It was challenging but I got it as close as I could to looking right. I moved a set of the body mounts to the rear, you will need an extra spacer between the frame to move the mounts because the original one needs to stay there luckily I had one. I also had to drill out the existing rear holes from 3mm to 4mm. Im happy with the way it turned out and still might trim more here or there. The lean angles are amazing, the roto start is the first thing to hit on the left side and the right side the fork end hits first. The body and chassis are not even factors to the lean angle. This thing is going to ROCK!!!
