Do you think FPV goggles are too expensive? Do you wear glasses and wonder how they'll impact your wearing goggles? Not with this Quanum DIY setup from Hobbyking. The parts ran somewhere around $77US (don't quote me on it, I don't have receipts handy as some of the parts I've had hanging around for a couple of years ). It weighs in at 377g including battery.

Earlier, I had added two strips of 3 LEDs each to the canopy, but I wanted more. Unfortunately, an A23 12volt battery just won't do more. One more strip, and all three strips are dull. Two more, and it no workie...

So, it was time to re-think it. Instead of a separate battery, I went with an up-convertor off the main battery.

[Update] The last few pics are the finished quad. With all the additions and the LEDs on, I lost about 1:30 of flight time (as compared to losing about 2:15 with my FPV setup). WELL worth it. In my test flights today (bright overcast sky), I could easily see the LEDs back in the woods. Against the overcast sky, I would lose orientation without the LEDs, with them, I can see it way up!

Just a minute or so of video

Xtreme Flight (1 min 24 sec)

Night time flying will be a little easier now. Two light strips, some wire, a switch, and a 12v battery. All attached to the canopy for an easy switch from daytime canopy to evening/nighttime canopy.

The creek in this pic is normally about 2-1/2 feet wide and 2" deep. In the 17-1/2 years that we've lived here, the widest I've ever seen it flood is about 18 feet wide. Then this year came. Near record snow fall. Record cold. Late thaw. And then the rains came (and came and came and came and are still coming!!!!!!!!!), so we're guessing around 45 feet wide atm (it's hard to see a lot of it from the air because it's flooded through all the brush)...

Supposedly we'll end up with a foot of snow and -10F temps. In between, this is what my streetside security cam caught. It's only 30 seconds total, watch for it...

Got my Latrax Alias yesterday. Setting up a case for this was the easiest as the Styrofoam that came with it fit perfectly!

Just couldn't wait any longer to get her outside. Windy (10mph), Cold (20F) , Bright and overcast sky, snow covered ground with tall trees in every direction. Perfect conditions for flying and a video (NOT). You can really tell the wind on it's way down as I had to angle it quite a bit to make it come straight down. If you're looking for awesome video footage, definitely look elsewhere!

Another case. When winter is finally over, I'll add cut outs in this one for my Proto X quads.
