Should be obvious copper tape and some cat shielding does wonders quieting otherwise noisy systems, but for those of you without RF Explorers, it's impossible to quantify just how much...until now that is

First a few things. I have on my bench

1) RCTimer MinimOSD v1.0
2) 3DR MinimOSD v1.1
3) ebay MinimOSD v0.1

I scanned all three and they all walk over the UHF control band. This in itself is fascinating because I was under the impression that recent versions of the MinimOSD board switched from Linear to Switching regulators. The Switching regulator options have options of switching at 550mhz, or 1200mhz, whereas the linear ones are just that. I have to check the schematics, but I didn't see any spikes in those ranges yet there is a significant rise in the noise floor up to 12" away from the unit.

Anecdotally, I've read across different posts that cpu processor clock cycles happen to coincide with the control band - only about -100db but still, it's noticeable. MinimOSD on the other hand raised the noise floor substantially within the typical distances of components on multirotors.

Anyway - I stitched together some scans...should be obvious which ones are which...Confirms obvious things we already know - like put your parts away from each as much as possible, but what's even more exciting is, how much copper foil tape dampens the effect

Fastest build to date, and I have to say - I'm love love loving this frame. The clean/dirty plate concept was enough to isolate vibrations from a chipped prop and out of track prop. Money well spent!

I'm an APM guy, but I'd heard about the CC3D, and just like any other fabulous piece of technology - it's unavailability makes it just that much more desirable. So I was out on ebay just checking to see what the latest gougers were charging when I came across a rather peculiar listing - a Maker's kit for a CC3D.

It was just a PCB board with 2 pigtails. In the listing was a link to a bootloader and a bill of materials. You take the BOM and create an order with Digikey - and as everyone knows - 2 days later you get a present in the mail I'd seen the curious inventor's instructional videos on how to solder SMD parts but it's just like anything else - they made it look so deceptively easy. The good news is, it actually is as easy as they make it out to be but there are special tools and techniques that are necessary to do this right.

Mistakes will be made and you will need the right tools to back out of those issues (i.e. solder braid and flux to wick away solder bridges), but the trick to getting through is proper planning, the right tools and lots of patience. For anyone wondering - unless you have the equipment, this isn't even close to being cost effective - but that's not why I took the challenge. I wanted a neat project that would test my skills - and boy were they tested!

This is a pretty straight forward process, but the bits you need to remember are the following:

* every board comes preconfigured with its own baud rate and that will be either 9600 or 115200
* S0 is the parameter in APM_Config.h that sets the baud rate for the FTDI port - set this to whatever your bluetooth module is
* When in Mission Planner - select the com port of the bluetooth module and the correct baud rate.

The part I can't explain is that despite the fact that the above 3 settings were set to 115,200, the com port itself in device manager was set to 9600...yet mysteriously it all worked.

This is a video tutorial for loading the MegapirateNG (MPNG) port of Ardupilot Mega onto a Crius All in One Pro v1.1 flight controller board.

The v2.0 board setup is not that much different and if you take the time to read the new parameters in APM_Config.h - you can pretty much figure out which parameters need to be activated.

Customizations
Pololu 1,2,3,4,6 pin housings + 100 female and 100 male pins - These come in very handy for tidying up wiring.
Sparkfun 3/4" Nylon standoffs, 4 to attach the Flight Controller, and 4 1.5" spacers (gorilla glued 2 3/4" standoffs) to attach the top plate. That 1.5 inches of clearance gives me enough room to drop a 5000mah battery in the trunk plus I can nudge the battery almost right up against the flight controller.

Alright - not too bad...Took me just about an hour to assemble the main part of the frame. Actually it took me 2 because rather than be a good little assembler, I missed the part about how 4 pieces make 2 arms (never a good idea to build tired).

I realize this is obvious - but you shouldn't ever do something this intricate when you can barely see straight from exhaustion....still though - gotta be done!

I accidentally screwed in the spacers on all 4 short arms, so I had to unscrew them all out - and basically start over.

But, at this point - I've gone about as far as I can go until the ESC, motor's and Flight controller make it here - possibly end of this week. The kit goes together fairly well...the motor mounts are definitely the toughest part. I had a pair wood working compression clamps that really really helped out in applying even force and snapping the parts together. I did have one little oh sh*t moment when the angle was slightly off and I clamped down a little too fast snapping the pieces out of the clamp. Nothing broken though so all is well.

First time lapse wasn't too bad...I'm going to increase the shots to 1 every 5 seconds and then export it at 5fps... 1 shot ever 10 seconds at 30 fps was so fast you couldn't make any detail out, so I had to slow things down a bit and improve the transitions a hair just to make the overall video a little more coherent.
