Coming down to the near end....still have some things to do before it is done..

First of all I love the RC Workstation I picked up at the AMA Convention - going to do a "Update" to the previous article I wrote as there are some improvements worth discussing.

Getting the two batteries ready - wrapped in foam and 'sealed' with some tape used to wrap packages - clear and sticky! Two packs - both 2000 NiMh , one for the radio, the other for the ignition. One of those packs is supposed to go in the floor of the fuselage and as you can see, it doesn't fit! So all wrapped up it is sitting next to the tank!

Wing panels fit! Love that hardware - nice and strong. And it is even painted No trouble getting the struts to match up with the fuselage.

Cowl was next....had to move the engine mount forward 1/4" for the prop to clear the front of the cowl. Might have to convince the owner to order a new cowl as I don't like the crack in the one he has (shipping damage).

Then comes the headache - putting all those wires, extensions, and plugs into the receiver and man it looks bad...the good part is the rear seat hides the wires from the front and an 'cover' on top hides the battery, receiver and wires from view!

Note how the rear seat is prevented from moving forward because the switches have leads only so long!...Continue Reading

This bird is coming right along....got the pull-pull for the rudder done (twice; first time was wrong - STUPID servo moved because I was too cheap to turn on the radio freezing the rudder servo in neutral!). Then reinstalled the wires....first put a 48" 2-56 threaded rod in from the tail of the fuselage, followed by some inner flexible tubing from Sullivan. The removed the wire and fed the pull-pull cables through the tubes. Removed the tubes and the cables are nice and straight and not wound around and push rods.

Tried to get the springs tighten on the tail wheel...some guys do such a nice job of winding the excess wire around the spring....me, I just bend it and hope.

Installed a good switch in the 'rear passenger's seat' - a Miracle switch with two switches - one for radio, the other for ignition. Glued the back of the seats to the seat itself with some craft glue - sort of like R/C 56 but a whole lot cheaper.

Put all the hardware on the wing for the Jury Struts and even plugged the wing panels on the fuse and tighten everything up nice and snug....Continue Reading

Interesting day....got some things done on the Cub: mounted the tail; it only takes 4 bolts! The wires that help the tailfeathers went on pretty well; one was way too long - the other perfect! Go figure....moved on to the landing gear: LOTS of nuts and bolts. Funny how many of the 6-32 bolts required a METRIC wrench to tighten as the SAE sizes would be either too big or too small!...Continue Reading

Busy day today.....flew off water with the Flyzone Seawind - first time for that in some 20+ years...no problems!

Worked on the J-3 a bit, painted the nylon hardware yellow, mounting the control horns on the stab before the stab gets mounted....and edited two videos - one for the club (http://www.amcrc.us/) and the other for the Seawind (

At the AMA Convention I purchased a VQ Dauntless and started working on my review of it then my bud John comes along and wants me to work on his NIB 1/4 H9 Cub....so I'm at a crossroads....

I started on the Cub, mounting my DLE 20 (he purchased a 35RA which I think is too much engine for him) and after a day and half, I finally got the engine mounted. Those blind nuts are a pain to mount...

Meanwhile I will have to order ten (10) servos for the Dauntless...I guess James at JB Hobbies will be getting ALL my money

Notice the Cowl is cracked don't know if I can match the paint...

Well she is just about done! Only have to finish the decals, wipe her down and send her off to her owner. It looks like 22 lbs....darn, I was shooting for under 20....must be all those bugs she has

Prop balances after painting and some touch up with some yellow nail polish. Funny thing, the prop will balance level, but turn it around and one blade is slightly heavier....repeat, same results...must be the weather

Test flights are for next Saturday - weather permitting!

Been doing a lot of work on this one....there is a LOT to do Turning the corner and should have this done shortly once the smaller details are done (gluing plastic parts, adding decals (from Callie).

I think I hurt myself trying to put this baby on the CG Machine by GP...LOT of weight for an old man

Engine is 'secured'; cockpit complete; battery hatch needs some attention (covering); two of the three batteries connected.

Last battery will power the retracts.

I'm assembling this bird for a friend and quite a project it is! To put it in one word: BIG!

A lot of other 'stuff' to complete this bird....

You start out with the wing by installing the aileron and flap servos, then the retracts. After that you 'join' the two wing halves....

The wing is now 'heavy' meaning it has Robart's electric retracts in AND the normal "other" 4 servos

Tried to ship a 'normal' ARF NIB from AZ to FL and UPS wanted almost $95!!! And that was ground all the way..........going to Greyhound later today for sure.

I wanted to try something different so I decided to try some night flying. Last year at our annual event we had 4-6 hours of some guys flying at night - and it looked like fun. So I obtained a Shiny from Tower......and then it gets interesting....

As expected, formation flying is difficult and we proved that! Still was a lot of fun. The glow pilot kept flying too fast and at first I could keep up with him, but soon fell behind!

Gotta love this bird - good flying - either glow or E; she's a keeper!

Been assembling two Phoenix Model's Tiger Moth - we have a very old version flying at our field - same dimensions, but fabric covered so we know that plane isn't a Phoenix Model. It is flying with a 4-stoker (can't remember the size) so Ron decided to order a box damaged Tiger Moth from Tower - and then I thought it would be nice to Review one for RCGroups!

To make a long story short....I build Ron's and am working on mine...his will be powered by OS 55 and mine will be Electric....this is going to be fun!!!

Been away for about a week on a cruise to Alaska - a gift from my son! I will not bore you with the hundreds of pictures I took - man that is some beautiful country!!! But I will share some pics I took of aircraft that I saw there...that's sort-of model aviation related right?

A young man brought a fuse to the field and said it was a Decathlon (which is was) BUT it was painted yellow and had a black stripe along the sides....hummmmm.

Anyway, he wanted to put an Irvine 61 on it and didn't know how, but asked if I would mount it - so I said I would. He also gave me a large piece of aircraft plywood and motor mount...so that is what I did ...

Had a greaaaaat day at the field this morning....used my three 5000mAh 5 cell batteries for three flights. Had a bunch of touch and goes, fly-bys and a few 'normal' aerobatics. The only trouble was in the landing gear department - one wheel would point outward after a landing and if it was a touch and go, no problem, but if the speed slowed enough, that wing would drop and try to do a ground loop!

I even re-adjusted them with toe-in and before I knew it the plane needed full right rudder to taxi straight! Other than that - this one's a keeper!

Still waiting on the retract servo....so idle hands are a scale buff's torture, so I played a bit with a tail hook and a bomb (that came from my Zero)....I know it is a bit too big, but heck at 100' it looks sort-of scale

I think those LG covers have to go - first of all they sit too high off the wing and second, they only go down to the actual wheel on the full size.
