Haven't made a blog entry in a while... I guess I have been a bit lazy. I have been flying a lot though and finally finished the Fusion 50 after waiting on a motor for 3 months.

The motor is great and she flies like a dream, here are a few pictures... you don't see too many of these here on RCG (the Fusion 50's that is).

Its been a while since my last entry, yep, gotta admit I have been a bit lazy. I have been working hard on my progress though and I'm moving along nicely. Its been four and a half months since my first flight and quite honestly I'm surprised at how far I have come; success did not come easy though, or cheap LOL... Once I started to get into the relm of aerobatic flight I started to push myself and had a few fun mishaps along the way.

CRASH #3
Well, this was classic... and funny. Labor day weekend, I had a nice crash free streak going and I was all set up for the long weekend, nice weather, clear sky's and no wind... What could be better? So, I wake up that Saturday (I was actually sleeping on the boat at the marina) and step outside to get my blood pumping, no wind so I got my heli and off I went to the lawn. The first mistake was I didn't have my coffee and I was up on the 'pad' less then 15 minutes after getting up... Yep, recipe for disaster.

Here I am on my second pack, all warmed up and have a small crowd gathered behind me watching (our neighbors at the marina love it! don't worry, I made it very clear how dangerous these things are, they respect that and stay back), so I'm flying fast, roller coaster like vertical stall turns going to nose bleed heights of over 150ft and fast smooth exits. Finally another update...

The past month has been busy, I crashed hard (see previous entry) and re-built the heli completely. The re-build was fun, did a new wiring scheme, got a new canopy, upgraded some bearings and got a CF tale boom. I also logged an additional 4 hours and started light aerobatics!

I started with shallow stall turns and gradually worked my way up to 90 degrees. I then moved on steep banked turns and then piros, just flat 360's in FFF and then combined the 2, which resulted in 540 stall turns... scary at first but fun!

Next were wing overs, swooping wing overs and split S's and as of last Thursday loops and flips. Scared myself Saturday afternoon when I did a loop but gave it too much negative pitch and basically stopped upside down... Then I recovered in a tale slide... Totally unexpected but I didn't make that mistake again!

With loops came idle-up and a whole new world. I figured the heli would be faster with a 100 92 85 92 100 throttle curve but dam! The first few circuits and figure 8's were scary fast, WOW! With flat 100 and this stock motor and 14t pinion I wouldn't be surprised if this thing did 80mph+... Its gotta be doing at least 65-70 right now, faster then any of my RC cars and I have one clocked at 62mph.

I also got nose-in hover down, no problem!

Went to my normal flying spot today (the football field @ the high school) and had a pretty spectacular crash... Honestly, It was awesome lol.

Conditions:

Less then ideal... But I have flown in worse.
Mostly cloudy with a 13mph SW wind, gusting to 17mph.

The Crash

I had already used up my first pack doing circuits and figure-eights, the wind was not so bad but I did notice an increase in velocity once I climbed above 80ft. I continued doing alternating circuits and eights (clockwise circuit, 8, counterclockwise circuit etc...) and then It happened.

I had just exited a right banked turn coming out of an eight and started the downwind leg of the clockwise circuit. The wind gusted and I gained speed, I didn't have room to roll out so I added pitch to clear the goal post then proceeded to turn the heli back in to the wind (as I had done a few times during the previous flight).

This is where I really lost it; when I gained altitude to clear the post the gust picked me up and carried me higher then before and right into the stronger wind. I should have initially banked harder to get that nose into the wind but I'm still learning so I wound up drifting, gaining too much altitude and almost losing orientation.

I decided to bring it in and start over, I got it flying into the wind and descending, I thought I was ok but as I was passing over the goal post a gust flipped me inverted. I followed through and flipped the heli back over but lost altitude...Continue Reading

Just went flying at a local field and decided to take a video with my phone. The quality isn't so great and neither is the angle but its better then nothing i guess. I'm still learning to fly CP helis (this is my 43rd flight) so this video is sort of like a bench mark of my progress...

I have been doing this CP heli thing for about a month now and gotta say, every time I fly it just gets more and more fun! Over the past month I have been on a strict regiment of 2 flights per night (weather permitting) but the past few flights have felt like giant leaps in my progress. After much practice I can finally fly FFF circuits and figure eights, not perfect and certainly not full speed but I am actually flying the thing and not just walking around behind it. This morning was great, I was practicing banked turns and long straight sweeps with a few figure eights mixed in. The best part was when a bird took interest to the heli and came in for a closer look, I thought it was gonna try to nip the tail rotor but then it backed off... That would have been quite the mess.

Here are a few pictures from this morning, I was flying on a giant lawn at the marina just before a day of fishing. This is the only surface in the marina suitable for a heli, luckily its conveniently located right in the middle of the lawn which just happens to be the only place in the marina that is suitable (and safe) for flying.

Well its been a about 2 weeks since my first log entry and my first real crash, here is the update.

I have been practicing hovering tail and side in, tried nose in very briefly a few times but didn't get ahead of myself. On July 6th I started mixing in slow FF without walking, just slow left to right and right to left, no circuits yet. I also have been landing with throttle-hold engaged from about shoulder height, much smoother this way.

The training-gear came off last night and today was my first flight without them installed; no problem, just had to take off from a hard surface as the tail-rotor would have hit the grass during spin-up.

Flying RC helis has been a dream of mine since I was 12 years old but I could never afford it because it's such an expensive hobby. Instead of helis I got into RC cars/trucks and loved it, well; now that I'm older and actually have some money to burn I decided that 13 years of dreaming is enough. Oddly enough, just as I was going to go out and buy a micro heli my parents got me one (blade mSR) for my birthday (November of 2009) and since then I have gotten pretty good with the mSR and have modded it in every way imaginable.

I have been living and breathing aviation my entire life and since this is my 'blog' I guess a mini bio seems appropriate. From the start (back in Russia) I spent much of my early years at the NAPO plant in Novosibirsk where my grandmother was an aeronautical engineer for Sukhoi. The bug bit me early and my dream back then was to be a test pilot/fighter pilot, well that dream never really died until the good old boys (USAF/NAVY/ARMY) here in the states denied me because I'm a Russian immigrant, even though I passed all of the tests with flying colors. They would not let me fly or work in any intelligence related field because of political reasons, well that’s just dandy, I think I would have made a great fighter pilot.

I have been flying since I was 14 years old, I initially learned to fly on ultralights (trikes) because my step dad had one but still wanted to fly tri-axis. That summer I got a job and spent all of my money on lessons in...Continue Reading
