Hi folks, is been a long time since last post.
it's a shame, but, i haven't done the maiden of koala, 'cause i been working on some projects that im going to post next weeks here.

does size matters?, i think so, and you can see why:

From Right to the Left:

* Cox 0.049 PT-19 engine, Das Not Ugly Stick (still in construction)
* Norvel Big Mig 0.061, Neofun Vision (working on engine issues)
* ASP S15A Blue Head, Koala Blue Angel (Ready to fly and waiting for maiden)
* K&B 4011 0.40, (no plane yet, workbench breaking-in process)

did you got the point? jajajajaja

Hi folks.

The Koala is almost done. after 8 months of slow working (due to my job jej) here a video of the electronics testing with my new 9x with FrSky module and backlight

Hi folks!
today i worked almost all day tunning my K&B .40 engine.
first, i changed the 9x6 propeller to a turnigy 10x6 wooden propeller. also added a beautiful 2" aluminum spinner. changed the fuel (after an hour of running on 75% methanol, 25% castor oil) with Omega 5% nitro fuel blended to 20% oil (added castor, of course).
changed my old OS#8 glowplug (same plug that i use to breaking in my asp s15a) to a K&B Mecoa glowplug with idlebar (remember, this engine doesn't have schneurle porting)

here's a video of the second fuel tank:

K&B RUNNING IN (0 min 20 sec)

here's a video of today's running. still needs some adjustments and breaking, but runs better. LSN is so much sensitive (1/16 of turn changes a lot engine behavior".

Hi folks!
i got for about 50 bucks this beautyfull engine, brand new K&B 0.40 engine. it came with muffler, old style square K&B carburator, and long glowplug with idlebar. had to make missing HSN and muffler gaskets. some images of inner cleaning and disassembly.
i worked yesterday making the HSN from a 3mm bolt.
also made the muffler gasket from a piece of teflon.

Hi folks!
Last friday i got (after a month of waiting) my new Turnigy 9X computer Radio.
The package came intact!

im very impressed with the functions of the radio. firmware is ok, binding was easy. the radio is great!!!
but, there're some issues that sucks (sorry ) on this radio.
first, you can't use a ESC with integrated BEC. only BATT port is allowed to supply the reciever.
reciever is heavy!....

transmitter antenna is a headache!

hope next month to buy a FrSky module with telemetry.. much better

some pics of my new radio....

Hi folks!

I wish you a happy new year 2011, full of flying time jajaja

this is the third and final part for this building thread of Koala. You remeber that im a rookie on RC planes flying and building, so Im doing my best with this plane. i got a job as engineer apprentice, so i have this days left to finish the plane, 'cause i will no have enough time then.

Ok, talking about Planes, if you mix this:
with this:

and just a little of this...Continue Reading

Hi folks. Merry Christmas to everyone!

I found today that RCGroups posts allow to upload only 150 images. that's a shame, i think that RCGroups never expected that amount of images from a single blog.

Here's the progress of wings building of Koala. First, i'd to trim every rib to fit on 6x6mm balsa spars.

Hi folks!
since i was studying so hard to my final exams i couldn't post something new to the blog. As you can see on mi posts, i have an ASP S15A engine laying around. i think at this point the engine is full broken in (the engine can stay on full throttle without problems. i have to change the glowplug, thats all).

Anyway, i'm still learning to fly (at this moment im training landings with 20KPH winds on Realflight. i think im progressing). so i decided to build a trainer for this engine. as i read on several forums, my engine is the lightest and more powerfull than other brands for its size, so this plane shouldn't have power problems.

Because 90% or 95% of RC trainer market uses 0.40 or 0.46 engines, plans for my 0.15 trainer were hard to find. just a few planes were choosen for building: maybe a version of Kadet, Eaglet or other plane. nothing close to my engine, until found a old design that was exactly what i needed: simple to build trainer, 0.10 to 0.15 engine. its name: Koala.

Here's what i found that evening. (Hand-drawn plan from Jose Oscar Pérez)

Koala's Specs:

Radio: 3 channel
Engine: 0.10 to 0.15 glow engine
Weight: 35 to 45.5 Oz (1000 to 1300g)
Wingspan: 41.7 inches

Was perfect to me!. the only thing i didn't like was the 3 channel design. my trainer should have ailerons!!.

I made a hard searching on internet to find a build Koala already flying. in fact, i found 2 planes flying in Argentina.

KOALA, entrenador (

Hi folks. i been working a lot in my little ASP 0.15. as i posted some months ago, my engine couldn't get it maximun speed, so i had to make some changes:

first, the glowplug: the last one (OS #8) didn't work properly. the new one is a Thunder tiger R2 supersport.

second, the propeller: the old propeller (master airscrew, 7X6) was replaced by JxF 7X4. hope this work.

third, the fuel tank: the old fuel tank (3Oz) wasn't enought for most 1/2A planes. i got a 4 Oz one. plus, i've changed the fuel tubing.

i want to test the engine with 5% nitro fuel.

here are my two engines

Hi folks. this project consists in and easy to build, easy to fly, easy to repair stick fuselaje type rc plane. maybe you were wondering: if you can get an slow stick from GWS for 25 bucks (ready to assemble and fly, without electronics), why you're building one?. the answer: here in Colombia, rc planes are so popular but not enough, so local hobby stores sells this plane for 40 or 60 bucks or more (just fuselaje stuff).

also this project came from my desire to fly my own designs (the people who buy the entire plane can't experience the feeling of build, design and fly your own creations.

Im student of Mechatronics engineering (4° year) at Escuela de Ingeniería de Antioquia, so i've some knowledge of mechanics, electronics, CAD design and software.

the main caracteristics of design should be:

1. Simple of building. all parts have to be assembled with minimum amount of tools (just glue, maybe other stuff).
2. common materials. all building materials are easy to find, repair
3. almost indestructible. unlike foam planes (yeah, very light and easy to repair), this plane have to be almost indestructible (i been heard that slow stick wings tends to bent and break. yes, they're made of foam.
