Well, today is a new day and a new chapter of my life. I start a new job today. My former employer decided to close the location I was working. I had the option of driving 60 miles one way to work at their other shop, but I declined. I guess if push came to shove and I couldn't find a job i would have on a temp basis.

Anyway.... The new job is working for a lab that analyses soil samples for farmers or who ever wants that done. they also will test plant tissue samples for nutrient uptake. I will be running their "new" machine which measures how well the soil will conduct electricity. I guess there is a direct relationship between soil conductivity and soil fertility. Who woulda thunk....

UPDATE 70 hours on the clock this week. Starting out with a bang I guess. I swear I missed a day someplace as it really seems like Friday although it is Saturday. Today was a short day at only 9 hours as I got rained out. I'm hitting the sack early tonight. Funny thing is I feel good, a bit tired, but feel good. I guess that's what hard work does to ya

As the title says..... I think this marks the "official" start of the building season. The weather forecast, well one of them, says 61 degrees and 5 MPH winds. It should be tolerable with a sweatshirt. My significant other has a second job so she goes directly there from her primary job. This means I have to run home and let our pooch out to do her business then back to town for the meeting. Beings I'm the "prez" I supposed I should be there..... I'll leave my plane at home and just enjoy the evening. By the time I run home and back and grab a bite to eat, it will be meeting time anyway. Next weekend it is supposed to be better weather anyway.

So, with the building season here, I guess I best get to building

My wife says "Clean out the garage today please" as she leaves for her second job yesterday. I agree it was getting a bit "messy"......

So I walk out and the first thing is the steps into the house. There have been numerous complaintses for about three years now. They were there when we moved there and they were just a "box" on the floor with a couple of layers of 2X's under to get them close to the right height. The were wobbly also. So.... I decided to make some new steps. Instead of two mismatched steps up I now have three steps and they don't wobble. I also made a step off to the side so those that need to use the wall for balance can do so. It will get a railing in time. That should make the MIL happy (MIL = Mother-in-Law) The wife comes home spits fire at the bigger mess I made but it's all made up for by the new steps.

As I was working on my Super Fli last night I was finishing up and was pouring the Tightbond back into the bottle from my dispensing cup. I dropped the lid to the bottle and watched it scoot under my work bench. When I looked under the bench it was nowhere to be found. I even used a flashlight for a better look. Didn't see the black hole either, so even that has disappeared. I robbed a lid off a Tightbond III bottle that was all but gone and dried up, so I'm back in business.

What is a guy to do about things like this

Well, I found out today come October 31, I will be jobless. Unless, I want to drive 60 miles one way. This business has two locations and the next one is the said 60 miles. With winter coming on I'm not, well pretty sure, I won't be doing that. Of course if push comes to shove, I will take it while looking for something closer.

The good news is, I know my next job will be looking for a job.

I'm starting to, well, really admiring, those who design things for a living. You need to think at least 100 steps ahead of where you currently are. An example is my current Super Fli project. "Had I been thinking ahead" I would have relilized that the first upright lasing behind the wing saddle was 3/16" to far back. Now you say what's the difference. Well, it is two feet and 3/16" back from the fire wall and a two foot piece of ply will not reach it. The ply is a doubler. If someody beside me wants to build this plane in the future it will be a frustrating point for them. I'll change the plans to suit.

I'm not really sure how to eleminate this problem except to go through every piece of the plan and make some measurments. In my simple mind, having some if the parts match standard lenths will ease the building process and lower the frustration level.

Hot, Humid & Hazy... has been the rule for the last seven or eight days. The other night the dew point was 79 degrees. No flying at all, it's just to miserable Besides I needed to attend to my new "potential" plots of grass I put in the ground. Had we not had rain the nite of the planting I would have let it go until it cooled down then watered. (no moisture, no seed growth) But after the rain I HAD to keep the water going so the seed had a chance to make it.

Monday the club is going to try a "Labor Day fun fly". If it goes well we may make it an annual event. Next weekend is the annual float fly. I wanted all summer to build a set of floats for the event as I've never flow on floats. I guess next year is the goal now

I went flying today with the goal of having one hour in the air. I've never used the timer function on my TX so I enabled it and timed each flight. I wound up with 62 minutes of time in the air. An hour doesn't like a lot of time but it took me most of the afternoon to get it. I did find out that a 10oz. tank will fly my Pulse XT40 with a YS53 for about 18 minutes with a little reserve. About half of the 18 minutes was at full throttle. That's a "long" time in the air. I was tuckered out after that and had to rest and BS for about 45 minutes to recover and continue my quest.

It was a good day at the field.

Yes, today is model aviation day. To celebrate our club is laying down it's "new" runway of petro mat. Supposed to start at 9AM but I have to work this morning so hopefully it will be done by the time I get there Of course there will be open flying after that to celebrate. I wonder who will have the honor to be the first to take off?

OK it's about 7:30 pm and the petro mat is down. We went the "cheep" route and had the runway area rolled with a two ton roller for asphalt. We then cut the grass as short as possible and laid the petro mat on top. At present it is like landing on a trampoline as there is still grass underneath. Taking off is a bit more of a challenge as the mat is much slicker than the grass and the plane tends to skid around a bit more. It will make a pilot out of you though. I also found out that landing with a missing wheel is a non event. Evidently somebody did not pre-flight their plane and lost a wheel in flight. Landing on the mat was a simple deal as the wheel-less gear leg just slid on the mat. You couldn't tell the difference. Even taxing was not that difficult..... until that gear leg hit the grass. Another member found the wayward wheel mid field in the grass so another wheel collar and flying was again possible. It was a good day except for the loss of a 1/4 scale Mustang. One of the pull, pull cables for the retractable tail wheel got tangled in one of the elevator linkages (one servo for each elevator half). Not enough elevator to recover from as lazy stall at about 400 feet of altitude On the bright side everything but the airframe survived.

This morning I had a PM from one of the Admins. It was a "freebee" upgrade to a plus member for one year. Not sure what I did to deserve the "honor" but none the less I had it. I poked around the plus forum a bit and checked out the benefits.

Long story short, I'm perfectly happy where I'm at. The benefits do not justify the $5 a month it will cost after the trial is up.... At least not in my mind.

I just replied to the Admin and requested the Plus membership be canceled.

I went to Staples to ask about printing directly from a CAD file. "No" was the answer. It has to be a PDF or JPEG or some such other frivolous file. The answer included "We don't have the software to print those". I said in reply "why, don't you just download DraftSight like I did. It's free and then you can print CAD files". I was met by a blank stare....and

So I'm checking around to see if some "real" print places can print those CAD files for me. This whole thing started when I wanted to print the drawing of the Super Fli I'm drawing up. When converting to a PDF everything seems to shrink a bit. When I draw 1/4 scale, I want 1/4 scale

In the mean time I'm trying to get a crashed airplane ready to fly and yard work and weed spraying and replacing the main crankshaft seal on my snow blowing tractor and all the other stuff that needs to be done before fall. I may not finish it all before my expiration date comes up

On my list of "honey doos" was the final assembly of the engine on my skid steer loader. It's an old dog with an Onan NHC in it. The engine was rebuilt by a local machine shop for the second time after the first shop screwed up the crankshaft grinding. That is a WHOLE 'nuther story The oil pump was marginal and should have been replaced. It is now reassembled with a new set of rod bearings. The mains are OK. It's up and running. Waiting for the battery to fully charge ant it will be moved to another building and out of the garage.

On to the second project of the day..... New grass sees in an area that was an old chicken coop and a concrete pad. A hole was dug two years ago and the concrete buried. The weeds have been sprayed, are dead and ready to be tilled up. The tiller was mounted on a "new to me" Simplicity 7119. My old 7116 gave up the ghost Well as things usually go for me there was a hiccup. The 7119 has a different transmission with the filter for the hydrostat sticking out the side, unlike the 7116..... About a 3/8 inch to high and the belt for the tiller of course rubs on the filter. An idler pulley will fix the issue and I have one to use but of course it is not simply a bolt on proposition Parts will be procured on Monday and I'll be in business. These two tasks took all day and I just walked in the door at 7:20 this evening.

On the upside I can walk out the back door, curse as loud as I want, and pee next to any close tree

I threw the Giles and my DLG in the car this morning with the idea of going flying after work. I was off at noon and went out to the field. I had to stop at Fleet Farm first to pick up a bag of grass seed. Another club member "ran me down" in the parking lot to ask if I was flying. "Yup be there in about 10 minutes.". Bob was waiting for me and we assembled both our planes at the same time. I went up for a first flight and all went well. He fired his plane and took off. Bob is a new pilot and I did not know his skill level. To my surprise he took off fairly well and flew around pretty good. He set up for a landing and was to high and fast. He performed a good go around, I was thinking to my self, "Bob has come a long ways". The second time around he set up and while not perfect he was doing OK. He looked a bit short but would hit the field at the far end. All of a sudden he dumb thumbed it and in the dirt he went. While the plane is fixable I think he will opt for something new. We talked about the incident for a bit to figure out what he could have done differently. There was no chance for me to take the TX from him. I felt bad for Bob as he has had his share of crashes. He spends lots of time on the simulator but by his own admission "it's not the same" as the real thing. Something we all know.

I've been itching for a new plane and it started with my 20% Zlin 526. Crappy plans and a short kit cut to the plans and that project may be on permanent hold. Time will tell.

So I'm casting about over on Flying Giants and come across a thread about the Kraft Super Fli. I had the Bridi kit way back when and loved the plane. It was a docile plane to land and it would still snap like crazy.

I have a Satio 1.20 laying around doing nothing so I was looking for a "Fli" to fit the engine. I only found one kit and it looks like the kit cutter has not been active for some time.

Did some more looking about and found another thread on F.G. and low and behold the pilot of the original Fli made a few posts. He even posted the PDF's of the full scale plans. Now the wheels are really squeaking. I down loaded the plans and downloaded DraftSite, a free CAD program. This is the "old dog" part. After a little help from the CAD section here on RCG, I'm learning CAD and I'm started to trace the original plans. I have a VERY long road ahead learning this new skill. As of now I'm just using a very few commands but am getting better at using what I do know. The PDF files were measured and then scaled to exactly 25% of the full scale version. Again a couple of false starts and then loosing the files somewhere in the digital world I have several of the parts traced and ready to be printed. I'm still not sure about all this blog thing. I looks to me it's just a way to add more "stuff" to the RCG site. So on to the jest of the title...

I'm rebuilding my YS 53FZ and am in need of new gaskets. Yes they can be bought new but I'm doing this because I can.

First order of business is to find suitable gasket material. Most any paper can be used and I've often used typing paper to make gaskets. I use a dial or digital calipers to measure the thickness of the old gasket and then look around for a suitable substitute. As I've said I've used typing paper, note card stock, tag board and just about anything I can find. On occasion I've even used "real" gasket material

Back to thickness. In most applications I've never had a issue just using typing paper. My YS is a bit different as the crankshaft drives a rotary valve so it's important not to set the back plate to deep into the crankcase and squeeze the valve against the crank. I use this example to just make you aware of the possibility of interference of the back plate and crankshaft.

So how do you make the new gasket? Well you can use the old one as a pattern if it is still in one piece. On my YS I used some black paint sprayed on a paper towel and "dipped" the part to be copied and printed it on the gasket material. An ink stamp pad would work as well and maybe even better. Ya, it most definitely would be better!

OK off to bed tonight. I'll post photos and write more in the next day or two.
