Orignal Post Here -

Today I officially shifted gears, now one year later after proposing it to the rest of my business colleagues, on how I was focusing our pet brand Digi-DNA, created from the evolution and adaptation of technology specific for aerospace manufacturing locally here in Charleston, South Carolina which began over 4 years ago. Boeing placed a dreamliner plant in my backyard so to speak and changed the environment a bit. With our then project partners Verizon and LG , now lead me to decide to finally follow some ambitious dreams of aviation to which I could feasibly have full control of raw materials such as prepreg carbon fiber to full manufacturing and assembly of finished RTF product, cont..

Today we were having a discussion about aircraft control via different flight modes. Personally would prefer to change the way input happened when controlling the UAV directly, so that the input is more intuitive in nature. I have seen allot of really well designed controllers recently however little that changes much of the traditional levers and dials, and nothing a single puck. Maybe there is something to that Star Trek control. Above is just a quick conceptual collage. The base was squished as you can see the original here, and was quickly modified to stimulate thought on how a typical RC twin 2 axis stick design could be evolved so that a more intuitive control can be developed. The center puck above is a true integrated 6 axis control, all that can have coordinated intuitive movements for the UAV. Continued...

This is a picture of a prototype skid steering FPV rover we have in development. In the coming days we will have updates and additional information about this vehicle. This project will be running the ArduRover software branch of ArduPilot and will be made available presale to our developer partners.

More information will be found at and updates will be first posted there as they are avalible. If you are interested in contribution to the product or access to pre-release products we welcome the inquiry.
Posted by tearig | Oct 21, 2014 @ 03:16 PM | 2,440 Views lists everything there is to know about the Pixhawk Flight controller on one page, it will control land, sea and air vechicals, and many more that have yet to be imagined. Perfect when you want your creation to "Follow Me"

That mode is standard on all of the Pixhawk flight controllers, just as dual GPS is also supported.

From the page:

Pixhawk Flight Controller by 3d Robotics
Pixhawk is an advanced autopilot system designed by the PX4 open-hardware project and manufactured by 3D Robotics. It features advanced processor and sensor technology from ST Microelectronics® and a NuttX real-time operating system, delivering incredible performance, flexibility, and reliability for controlling any autonomous vehicle.

The benefits of the Pixhawk system include integrated multithreading, a Unix/Linux-like programming environment, completely new autopilot functions such as Lua scripting of missions and flight behavior, and a custom PX4 driver layer ensuring tight timing across all processes. These advanced capabilities ensure that there are no limitations to your autonomous vehicle. Pixhawk allows existing APM and PX4 operators to seamlessly transition to this system and lowers the barriers to entry for new users to participate in the exciting world of autonomous vehicles.

The flagship Pixhawk module will be accompanied by new peripheral options, including a digital airspeed sensor,

UAV 270-m "RTL" success (1 min 39 sec)

I had not intended to test RTL on this flight however I was glad it worked. I suspect the RC tx was swamped by the Video Tx. going to try it again with a 5.8 ghz Vtx to see if it removed the issue.

Quick photo, will post more and a flight video, spent a lot of time on wire mangment with the small FC that is very capable, and supported directly in Mission Planner.

Follow me, Sonar, all on this little platform.

UAV370 FPV Testing Setup (10 min 1 sec)

The GoPro placement provided for a interesting point of view, this also shows the flexibility of the fpv integration.

Mamba UAV 370-p test flight, tuning and balance, however we do have fun with the soundtrack. This is a full flight video, of the first flight on this particular production airframe.

This was a recent aircraft test flown and tuned for a customer. We provided all of the integration into a very well sorted RTF, or Ready to fly aircraft.

All the flight modes were tested however they were not noted in the video.

Mamba UAV 370 FPV Testing (4 min 53 sec)

This is a video of a full flight from take-off to touchdown to show the stability of the platform in terms of main frame vibration that creates the dreaded jello. There has been no post stabilization done on this video and has only been color corrected (Attempted) The flicker is a suspected light sensor issue as the GoPro Hero 3 Black was attempting to adjust to the light levels.

FrSky Taranis flight modes with ArduPilot Tutorial

This is my tutorial on how I configure my FrSky Taranis to allow flight mode changes to be displayed on the Taranis screen as well as spoken out loud.

I use the following switch settings for my flight modes:
SB+ Manual Mode
SB- AUTO MODES Selected by SA
For this we will be using Logical Switches, Special Functions, Flight Modes and the Mixer. This setup allows me to select a normal flight mode (Either Manual or FBWA) and also announce which AUTO mode is armed.

Flight Mode setup:

First we need to define each of the 5 flight modes. Flight mode 0 is a default mode that is active when no other modes are, so we will skip it and start on flight mode 1. The flight mode name is what is shown on your transmitter display.

Flight Mode Names
Setup as listed

Name: Normal
Switch: SB+

Name: F B W
Switch: SB

Name: Loiter
Switch: SA+

Switch: SA

Name: Auto
Switch: SA-

Next configure the Logical Switches.

Logical switches are used for secondary actions such as playing the voice for current / armed flight mode. This step depends on the Flight Modes being defined. L1-L5 are used to activate on Flight Mode selection, L6-L8 are used to activate AUTO Mode selection and announce when not in AUTO Mode (IE Arm AUTO,

I have not picked this Vtail up since I was stupid enough to take a part of a tail rotor to the eye this past June. It was a really stupid mistake, everything is fine now and it confirmed that the original landing gear would not work, at least for me. The above gear shown is from a mold that is then cut on a water-jet. I made up several sets for many of the models I wanted to covert to coaxial setups, and could not forget the Vtail.
This frame will convert well to a Mini Y6 design also and if I flip the gear around everything clears. This curve shape was more of opportunistic engineering than anything else, once cut though it has proven to be great landing gear. I have recently added this as a option for the custom RTF builds we provide, if you are interested more information can be found here under Mamba UAV 370 page on the site, very soon they will be also sold at

3DR Goes to Necker Island - Full Length (3 min 22 sec)

A bit of sausage making in this video, still allot of great unseen footage. and for the few of you who want to see what goes into making of these short film productions, have a gander. We have been integrating this same ‪#‎followme‬ technology into our UAV line of ‪#‎Drone‬ builds available in customized formability with extensive use of ‪#‎CarbonFiber‬ on This is made possible through the collaboration with ‪#‎3drobotics‬. Feeling very confident now with the decision to choosing them as an integral partner long before knowing that ‪#‎RichardBranson‬ was also going to support the endeavor. Exciting future it may be...
