Talk about being busy....this fall I finished up a 30cc Sbach; Electric pattern bird Apollo; a ST Acrobat 3D (electric); Vista BL powered glider and a FliteWorks PT-17 Stearman "Red Bull".....guess that makes me 'busy' a bit eh?

This time of the year things can get quite interesting what with all the Christmas holidays and such...and I'm glad to report I'm not doing much EXCEPT building, fixing and flying airplanes. Now that is the best Christmas Present I could give myself - and the wife agrees with me.

So step back from your 'busy, busy, busy' lifestyle and enjoy your hobby!!!!

Tried some more flights with that new prop today (18 - 6/10). Man that thing can really move out! Tried some rolls at low rates - well let's just say they were fast - and did not require any elevator/rudder movement to keep a straight line....then switched to 3D (or high) rates - can't believe how fast that plane rolled!!!! Then quickly switched back to low rates - at high speeds that high rate can get you into trouble faster than it rolls.

Moved the flight battery (6.0V Nicad) backward to just before the wing rod. CG did shift a bit and made the plane fly so much easier for those 3D maneuvers. Still need to reach the maximum throw for the elevators - so a friend loaned me some longer HiTec servo arms....book indicates 45 degree up/down on high rates; right now about 30-35 on high rates. So some fiddling around tonight......

Over the last week I have had the opportunity to fly the Fly Models 30cc Sbach about a 1/2 dozen times and have come to the conclusion that I like this model, this brand (see: http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/ite...itemId=1001428). I had issues, but not with the airplane itself, but when all is said and done, I'm happy!

Flew, or should I say we TRIED to fly with a 20-6 Master Airscrew 'Classic' and the poor old DLE 30 couldn't get over 6600 RPM's...did manage to take some video for the Product Review but with the engine running that poorly, not a whole lot could be done once in the air.

Switched to a Zinger 18-6/10 today and boy did that make a big difference - LOTS and LOTS of vertical and I was impressed with how quickly the plane would slow down or speed up.

The balance if slightly nose heavy - three pilots all flew the plane and all agree the suggested CG is great for the first flight(s). To remedy that problem, I'm going to move the flight battery (6.0V Ninmh) back to or on the CG location. I will also change the prop to a newly acquired 19-8 and see if we can hold a hover better.

Additional elevator throw is needed (currently have 30 degrees but need about 45 for good 'Wall' maneuvers. Landings are tail-low if you let it get too slow as I found out on the first flight

Took the bird out for her first flight today....had a bit of a time starting the engine - after all it was "only" 9 months ago I crashed my RV-8 with this engine - and hasn't been started since.

Got that running and for some reason one of the pull-pull cables came off the servo arm...I was certain I used locktite ...guess not. Anyway, got that fixed and discovered I have run out of excuses NOT to fly - so we took the plane off the test stand (Pic 1) and placed it on the ground.

ONE FLIP and the DLE30cc was running. A couple of runs up/down the runway and proved the tailwheel was a bit 'touchy'.....Note to self; let's add a bunch of expo to the rudder when it is set to low throws.....

Take off was 'interesting' (see pic 2) as she wanted to drop the left wing a bit...got that straighten out and then needed some down trim as the plane wanted to climb.

Flew around and did some rolls (FAST on low rate) and then a couple of loops - and as previously thought, plane faded to the left - Note to self: let's work a bit harder getting those two elevator halves working together.....passed the transmitter to Luis (who is a better 3-D pilot than I will ever be) and advised him 'not to do anything' (he totaled my new GP U-Can-Do by doing some ungodly maneuver known only to him) and he tried knife edge - good news - almost NO coupling and proved it by doing a couple of knife edge circles. Finished he up last night....have to get a 10-32 x 2" bolt to hold the spinner on, but other than that she is ready to take to the skies!

Check how the color changes with the angle of the sun!

And it fits into the truck with the wings on

You know how those 'last minute' things you do to a plane just before you finish it can take a LOT of time? Well Saturday was spent doing just that....add this, move that, secure it better, and who know what else was done....BUT IT IS DONE!

Sunday I'd like to take the plane outside and run the engine so I don't have to do all that 'adjusting' on Monday - can't fly Sunday because the Boy Scouts of America have our 'field', so Monday will be the test hop day.

I moved the 6 volt battery up front and that was just what was needed to balance it. I added the on/off switch to the radio and it has a nice RED light indicating it is 'on' and I like that. Added a Rxl (sp?) fiber optic unit and ran the LED out the side of the fuse, so if two red are showing, I'm ready

Still worried about the difference in elevator throw between my left and right elevator; tried a couple of things but it only got worse, not better. So when giving a lot of elevator I expect the plane to veer to one side (@ 15 degrees of up), but at full up, both are equal - go figure!

I found the problem.....my charger wasn't charging the 6 volt battery....bought a new 6 volt battery and every thing works!

Now I'm at the point of finishing up the plane.....mounted the tailwheel (first picture shows where it is supposed to be; second one where it actually ended up), added the wing Side Force Generators (I think they may be more for looks, but we will see); finalized the canister/engine and mounted the cowl..

Placed plane on its wheels for the first time - looks good! Brought out the CG balance gizmo and I'm a bit tail heavy

I'll now try and move the 6 volt battery up on the firewall or close to it!

New DEVELOPMENT....tried a NIB Futaba 6EX with their R617FS receiver (two servos connected to RX with "Y" connector)

AND THEY WORKED PERFECTLY!

Quickly plugged the "Y" into aileron channel on Specktrum RX and "Same old thing".... so I guess I'm going to have to sell those servos - crap - that puts me back a couple of weeks and probably lose some money in the process

I'm at a stand still with the 30cc Sbach right now because the two elevator servos do NOT work together - one will move 100% of throw, THEN the second servo will move ~50% of throw. Go back to neutral, the opposite happens with the second (50%) will move first, THEN the 100% servo moves back to neutral.

I've changed RX, "Y" connectors, Tx; programmed master / slave; used JR Matchbox and the same thing happens.....I'm at a loss.

Oh, another thing; I replace the HiTec servos with JR or Speckrum, and they work perfectly like they should!

I'm confused and HiTec doesn't seem to reply to either email or posts in two different forums....

Guess I needed some help from the Internet again....a couple of gentlemen advised me to remove the engine, plug the mounting holes and redrill, moving the mount further to the left and NOT take out the right thrust....so it is back to workbench.

Did glue in the rudder, mounted the rudder servo and hooked up the Pull-Pull system. Even managed to mount the servo arms - the METAL servo arms, so I really feel secure now.......good grief, I hate to remove the motor AGAIN but in the long run it should be well worth it.

Note to self....remove the landing gear to work on the fuselage!!!

Got a little bit done today....glued in the Robart hinges in the rudder only, will glue the rudder tomorrow when I know the hinges are working well - they should as they have a large amount of Vaseline on the hinge joint!

Played with the cowl - first by adding two 1/4" washers on each of the right side motor mount - that took away my right thrust as it now has only a little bit - BUT it fits the cowl much better.

Another 'problem'.....finally locked down the engine/canister was waiting on my servo arms to arrive when it was decided to work on mounting the tank and cowling. Tank - no problems, even got the fuel dot/switch/charge jack in - and not with a whole lot of room to spare.

Then I starting working on the cowl.....no trouble getting over the engine now that the pitts muffler isn't being used...but wait!

The centerline of the engine is so very off - or is it the cowl that is off? Well, it is the cowl....when the cowl is positioned correctly on the fuse, well you can see how far to the right the engine is!

If I center the engine, there is a large gap where the cowl meets the fuse!

Solution will be to add some shims to the right side of the motor standoffs to get it back in line - and that will destroy the built in right thrust!!!!

I sure hope it doesn't ruin the flight characteristics of this beautiful bird!

Rough morning, so only afternoon work today....check'd the stab - it dried 'right on the money', so I shifted back to the canister and how to keep that blasted thing off the plywood former (Pic 1).

I cut some black tubing - supposed to be able to stand up to heat- and placed a piece of sheet aluminum between the canister and rubber tubing. The rubber tubing's purpose is to keep the canister from banging against the former. The sheet metal is to distribute the heat so the tubing won't melt......then I got thinking again - not a good idea for me to think.....how about some gasket material between the canister and the metal? Now that looks good - but how am I going to keep all this in one place while the noisy thing on the front end is running?

S L O W progress for some reason.....anyway, today I epoxied in the stab and I hate it when the plane requires you to slide the stab into the fuselage, then glue it. I had about 1/4" of bare balsa on one side showing (bottom of fuse), added 30 minute epoxy, slid the stab about 1/4" too far, added epoxy to joint, then slid back to the correct position.

Then wipe off all the epoxy that didn't get used. As tight a fit as I had, I doubt anything is going to break this bird's tail feathers/fuse joint......any bets?

While that was setting up, the ailerons got a 'gap filler' in the form of some clear MoneyKote. The gap is now gapless, but I would rather have the ailerons closer to the wing's trailing edge. Guess the Robart hinges weren't recessed as much as I thought. Nonetheless, there won't be any air creeping the bottom of the wing to the top anytime soon.

Next will be mounting the elevator servos while I wait for some metal servo arms which are coming from China and because they were NOT ordered from HK, I believe they will arrive!

Wing Panel #1 aileron works just fine....guess I just had to leave the epoxy dry

Finished bending the canister header.....now I will have to remove it and weigh the entire canister and see how much additional weight I'm adding to the airframe
Tonight I'll epoxy in the aileron hinges on Wing Panel #2.......

Finished up one wing with gluing the Robart hinges in place on the aileron...I don't think they will drop down when the power if off as they are a bit stiff, not a whole lot, just not totally free moving. Maybe the hinges weren't lined up perfectly or there is some epoxy in the hinge joint - but the aileron is still moving, just won't drop due to gravity

Well I went ahead and opened up the bottom of the fuselage and have temperately placed it in the fuse....it fits. Now I'll have to remove the pitts style muffler and make the final adjustments for holding this bad boy in place.

Just finished up John's Aeroworks 260 QB and will take it to the field Wednesday. Still waiting on vinyl graphics, should be here on Thursday at the latest.

Next I had to make another decision: which hinges for the control surface should I use...those that came with the ARF, or Robarts #310 (see pic for size difference). While going through the supplied hinges, I came across one hinge that was broke, or at least not assembled well. Carefully exam (under a magnifying glass), proved the bearing (brass insert) did not miss one of the holes, but the hole was broke enabling the brass insert to sit at an unusual angle....THAT decided it - I re-drilled the holes to 3/16th and inserted the Robart hinges!

Now I have to rethink the aileron horn situation.....the weakest link will be the nylon circular horn that fits over the metal drive shaft on the servo....might have to save and get some METAL ARMS for the HiTec servos....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr more money.

I'm also playing with the idea of installing the canister muffler by first opening up the belly of the fuse, install the complete unit from the rear and then re-constructing the bottom....darn, for a 'C' note that canister is going IN THE PLANE!!!

Due to finances (or lack thereof), I've decided to follow the instructions and make the servo arm extensions supplied. As was so nicely pointed out, the weak link will be my round NYLON servo arm, to which the supplied metal (nice red color) arm to secured with two 2mm bolts and held on with a nylon locking nut.

So there may be a time when the aileron (or elevator) servo appears stripped, but it will only be the nylon arm - that is IF I have a plane to fly after the 'event'. Maybe I should not do too severe maneuvers like the Wall.

Guess my canister muffler isn't going to fit in the Sbach - too large a diameter:

Didn't get to the field today, it rained! Not a big thing but around here it is very unusual, so our field wa muddy. Our field has a dirt runway, so it was soaked.

Therefore I didn't get those batteries today.

But that was maybe good because I stayed up all night with one of my dogs who had some surgery yesterday. Boy, almost a grand. What are you going to do when they call you while the dog is "under" asking you if they should pull three teeth at a cool three hundred IN addition to the scheduled operation.

And I was going ask for $200 to pick up another ARF in Tuscon
