The Goblin 500 went down and in the end I determined it was the Talon 90. Then the 550X went down and I think a motor wire came loose, but I still have to check the logs on the CC Edge HV 80 to make a final call on that. My friend Bob thinks that is it the Ikon Flybarless system because that was the only item that I used from the Goblin and on the 550 I had a BEC installed. I have a 600 X kit (yes, the one for sale on RCGroups) and since I got the combo kit, I would be using the Beast X instead. So last night while talking to my daughter I nudged the box with my foot and mentioned no one was interested in buying it. She was surprised that I was selling it and then said I should build it because I told her never to give up. I love my kids. If it doesn't sell by Saturday, I am going to build it and this time all the parts are new and known to be reliable. Plus a lot of parts from the broken 550X, like the head and tail cage, will fit it because they are basically the same.

Planes are fun, but for me, nothing beats flying a heli. I'm almost at the point where I don't need to think about flying much. I have taken apart and rebuilt everything from the Nano CP X to a few 450's I have , but breaking the 500 size barrier has eluded me. hopefully the 600x will be the one. If not, there is always the 680's, 700's and bigger to try. If at first you don't succeed, go bigger!

So my second attempt at building a 500+ size heli has also ended miserably. I checked over it for weeks and did 3 test runs in the back yard with no issues. The 3rd test was on high speed doing pitch pumps and I was confident enough in the heli that nothing would go wrong. Around the 2 minute mark I went to do a loop and the second it started I heard the motor spin down. At first I thought I didn't put it into stunt mode, but the throttle stopped responding. The only thing I can think of is a motor wire might have come loose. The motor was from the Goblin 500, so maybe it is just a bad motor. Whatever happened, I think I am done with anything bigger at this point. It is just too much money.

Well I finally found out why my Goblin 500 crashed. With so many parts broken and the battery melting part of the frame, it was hard to tell. But all the electronics survived (At least they were working) and I used them in a Blade 550X Pro. They worked during the build when testing the gearing, but then I was doing a ground test before a maiden flight and the motor cut out. I tried again and the same thing. I tried a different motor and same thing. I tried a different flybarless system and same thing. So it was the Talon 90 the whole time. That explains the total lack of control before it crashed. It also explains why only one main blade broke on impact. They weren't spinning! The Talon 90 was able to be programmed and worked on the bench, but it would not work under any real load. I emailed CC about the Talon, but I haven't heard from them yet. For the 550X I just build and 600x I am going to build I will be using the CC Edge 130 HV's. Lesson learned.

Until I pick up the new speed controllers and 2 new Pulse batts for the 600x, my first 12S rig, I guess I will keep flying the 300x, 300 CFX and 450X. I just got the 300 CFX tuned nice too. My first good flight was the one I recorded!

If you read my posts, you know I crashed my Goblin 500. It took most of the Summer to get over it. This past Saturday I took the Blade 300 CFX, 300X and 450X all out for some lazy sport and mild 3D flying (in between Sukhoi SU-29mm flights) after 2 months of flight sims and just hovering slowly around the backyard.

I was surprisingly relaxed with the 300x. I even tried a crazy multiple piro flips with the tail whipping all around while it was in one place and almost pulled it off until at the end. It dropped fast while trying to end it. I was able to recover quickly, so no big deal.

The 300 CFX has a possible vibration issues because it will hover fine for a while, but then acts like I'm giving it a little left aileron at times and throws me off a little. I'm still working on that, but I have yet to have a comfortable flight with the CFX.

This was my first actual non-hovering flight with the 450 x. I started with a 10 second hover, did full 360 left and right and it was rock solid. No drifting or other issues at all. I did a few slow circles, flew inverted for about 10 seconds followed by a loop forwards and then back. What really got me going is when I went to do a stall turn. I loved doing those with the Goblin because I could get it really high while keeping the nose almost vertical. I loved flying up until I crashed my Goblin 500 at the end of one Fun Fly. At the next Fun Fly a few weeks later, I was jittery even just flying planes like the Yak 3X and Carbon-Z Cub. I ended up spending most of the time on the Apprentice S and my 300 X and CFX never came out of the van. So I spend the past few weeks on the flight sim and racing RC cars. Finally yesterday I took a new 450 X I picked up cheap at the LHS(http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLADE-450-X-...-/321417672402) out for a maiden flight and remembered how much I love flying. I tuned up the 300 CFX a little more to my taste too. It was pretty rough out of the box. Much smoother now. Then I pulled out the 200 QX for a little night flying and realized in agility mode that I had the expo at 0. Twitchy little sucker. Much better at 30% expo.

My son likes the 200 QX, but the 350 QX is just so much easier for him to fly. He credits all his time on the MSR X for making him as good as he is. It is always fun to let an adult try the MSR X, fail miserably, and then hand the TX to my 8 yr old to show them how it is done.

Now I want to get the big planes back to the field and I can't wait. Maybe this weekend....or sooner.

I went camping over the weekend and I have taken aerial footage all over that park, so I left the GoPro and 350QX at home this time. After eating dinner at the camp site I checked my email on my phone and someone posted a comment about my footage from the park I was staying at. What were the odds?

So I scrolled down to the comment and it was from a person who used to go there all the time but now has cancer and has limited funds because of it. She thanked me for bringing back so many great memories. I read it to my family when we gathered around the campfire and I cried while reading it.

I make the videos and share them all over the place so people can share in where I am and what I am doing. But to know I made some one feel better for a little while when their life isn't going so well was really special.

I know that the federal parks just temporarily banned drones and I hope that they come up with a solution for that. As an AMA member who follows the rules, I would like to keep documenting places I visit. There are hundreds of parks here in Pennsylvania and all I want to do is see some of them from the sky.

I had a great time flying my new Sport Cub, Yak 3X, 300x and other stuff. I was really tired at the end of the day, but decided to take my Goblin up with the Ikon system in flight stabilization mode just to discharge the battery. A pop and some smoke later and it was on the ground on fire. It wasn't a total loss! I still have a tail cage! Time to rebuild from a new kit! I might go Beast-X this time.

Oh yeah, there was an auction and I got a Blade 300 CFX for $300! There was a DJI Vision 2 that went for $600. If I only had the money!

That the Parkzone Icon does not have AS3X. At first I thought there was something wrong, so I did a fly by. Then I remembered it was always like this.

Camping this weekend with the Icon, Revolt 30 and 350 QX. Too bad I am too far from Harford PA for the fun fly there this weekend.

I have 2 Helion Invictus that I love. My son's needed the clip on the bell crank put back in place out of the box. Not the easiest thing to do as the whole bell crank just wants to pop apart. That happened dozens of times before I got it. My favorite was it popped apart and one of the part hit the brim of my baseball cap and went into my soda. So when mine seemed not want to turn right I took it apart and nothing was wrong! Turns out my son let one of his friends drive mine and the kid reset my end points on the servo. Next time, I am checking the end points first.

It was windy and the clouds were dark yesterday, but I wanted to fly the 300X. I had a nice stunt flying routine going and I leveled off for a quick orientation check because I lost it. Sure enough, when I gave it left rudder, the tail boom came out left telling me I was node in. I went to correct it but nerves took over. I was able to get it close enough to see the canopy and that it was still nose in and that it when I accidentally gave it down elevator and saw it heading for the ground. I hit the TH and let it slide in. I broke one main blade grip, tail fin and shaft is loose. I still have to take it apart and see what the total damage is, over 30 flights on it and that was it's first crash. So disappointing. And yet another rebuild.

Oddly, I flew the 130x yesterday the same way and never lost orientation. The 350QX doesn't even care about the wind and the lights help. Maybe I need lights on my helis to help with orientation.

Well, we moved to a new building at work about 2 months ago and my new seat was cramped for a guy my size. In the first week my left hip started hurting. I got a new desk and chair after a few weeks, but the pain kept getting worse. My primary doctor said it might not be that bad and sent me to a specialist. I saw that doc this morning with some X-Rays and apparently I have Femoroacetabular Impingement, which in my case means my bone has slowly been growing in an odd shape to the point where I have arthritis pain. I am going to see a guy in Allentown about just shaving the bone down and putting off a hip replacement for a long time, but I have to see if I am a candidate for that surgery. Fingers crossed.

So what am I going to do? Well tonight I am going flying since standing or bending over doesn't bother me much. Most of the pain is while I am trying to sleep. I am going to get as much RC flying and driving in as I can until this is all sorted out.

I am going to have to take some time off of work. Hopefully they will just let me work from home. They probably will because I do programming for a really good company who takes care of us. It is funny because I recently told my wife that my RC collection used is worth a lot of money and that if we ever really needed to we can sell it off. I've seen a lot of post in the classifieds here from people who have had to do that and I hope it doesn't get to that point.

Well I decided that it was a week for new batteries at the LHS. I picked up 3 3S 2200 that I use a lot and 3 4S 2200 for my rebuilt Venom Gambler and short Yak 3X flights. There was some money left over and I can't let that happen. My son has been asking for a Hubsan X4, so that is what we got. I like the controls for it. I even flew the ProtoX using it. So much easier to control both quads with this TX. So far I've only been able to flip indoors once without hitting the carpet with the Hubsan, but the ProtoX hardly drops. The only thing is someone unplugged a USB charger from a ProtoX but did not unplug the cable from the ProtoX and that killed the battery. I barely get over a minute with it. This is the second time that happened. So remember to not let the cable attached to the ProtoX because it will drain the LiPo all the way down! That being said, I have to get my own Hubsan soon.

The Goblin 500 needs a minor link adjustment for drifting, but I was doing 3D at 2400 RPMs and it was awesome.

After the last Goblin flight, I pulled out the 300x. I have been practicing on the 300x all winter in Phoenix and flew mine for 2 batts. Practice paid off because all the 3D stunts I did in the sim felt identical to flying in real life.

Then I pulled out the 130x and over confidence took over. I have been trying to fly closer with it. I saw the tree right after a loop and it was too late. Nothing broke it bent, but that is 2 for 2.

Finally, my son flew the UMX Radian. He was a natural at gliding. I am so proud of him!

I didn't get a lot of flying in this past weekend. Sunday morning I was waiting for a friend to arrive to help me fix a water pipe that suddenly started leaking right into my closet where I keep some planes. The apprentice has some minor stains on the wings and the Calypso had a small shower when the hole stopped dripping and starting misting, but nothing was actually ruined. The pipe is right between a gas pipe and wires, so I'm not touching it. With 1/2 hour to kill waiting for Rob, I grabbed the Carbon Cub SS that wasn't flying right and headed to the field by my house. Sure enough the elevator was way off even though it didn't look it. I was able to land, pinch the elevator down a little and fly perfectly. I was coming in for a landing when I nice breeze came up and I was hover a few feet in the air about 10 feet in front of me. The wind died, I landed and the plane skittered past me and the right wing hit the box and cracked a little. A quick fix, but annoying since it was only the second flight with this one and I usually land much farther away from myself.

Got home. Rob shows up. Pipe fixed quickly thanks to Shark Bites, which I now know work on copper too and not just Pex. I could have fixed that myself had I known. Anyway, up to the 130x that I just replaced the metal A gear (and landing gear) on but it was still slipping. So I slapped a new B gear on and it worked, but there was a lot of head wag.
