This is the Maiden Flight of my Eflite UMX Pitts S-1S EDF "Morgan" over the icy snow-covered fields of David Lorenz Regional Park.

Eflite UMX Pitts S-1S EDF - Boosted Biplane "Morgan" Maiden Flight (4 min 18 sec)

Field conditions at David Lorenz Park were less than favorable as the location was still encased in layer of snow and ice. There was however a small strip of exposed AstroTurf that was just enough for me to take off and land from. Not knowing how the UMX Pitts was going to respond with the UMX Habu EDF Booster Unit installed, I kept this flight slightly conservative. But it wasn't long until I realized that the UMX Pitts S-1S EDF Special "Morgan" was ready and eager to please.

This variant of the UMX Pitts is considerably faster and yet remains solid in the air with connected feel and maneuverability, while displaying no bad tendencies. I also didn't encounter any weird trim issues, nor did the UMX Pitts react adversely to the UMX Habu EDF Booster when under throttle. Speaking of throttle... with this setup its really hard to resist not going full throttle and watching this plane banshee through the sky. Sport Aerobatics are executed with predictable ease. Vertical is near to unlimited. Its a good thing that its powered by dual Hyperion 2S 330mAh Babbelbatts that supply excellent punch and quality power, in a small size and lighter weight. The two Babbelbatts when placed against the Brushless Outrunner Firewall...Continue Reading

This is a preview of my second Snow Day Build, the UMX Pitts S-1S EDF Special "Morgan" and is my attempt at creating an EDF - boosted ultra micro biplane.

Eflite UMX Pitts S-1S EDF Special "Morgan" - EDF-Boosted Biplane Preview (6 min 52 sec)

The UMX Pitts S-1S EDF Special is powered by the stock Eflite 3000 Kv Brushless Outrunner with a 5.75 x 2.5 "Stump Puller" Prop, as well as an 11750Kv Brushless UMX Habu EDF mounted to the underbelly.

The inspiration to create this dual power-sourced 2S Brushless Outrunner / EDF Hybrid comes from the unique Screamin' Sasquatch Jet-Boosted Waco biplane:

Here is the touch and go, take-off and landings flight demo of my UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) 3000KV using my custom Dubro 2" Tundra Tires.

Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) 3000KV - Custom Dubro 2" Tundra Tires Flight (6 min 6 sec)

The process to make your own custom Dubro Tundra Tires set is as follows: (see below...)

I gently pried off the Foam from a set of these Dubro 2" Super Lite Wheels: http://www.horizonhobby.com/super-li...ls--2-dub200sl

The Foam is a PITA to remove and requires patience as well as a blunt nose pair of pliers as you grip the edge of the Hub and pull.. and pull your way around. The Foam will eventually give, but will not tear. Others have cut the edges of one side of the Hub off, which is another way to do it if you have small sharp shears.

Then I took the Hubs from these Wheels: http://www.horizonhobby.com/mini-lit...1-1-2-dub150mw

I spray painted these Hubs a metallic black, then added the lug nut details and finally press-fitted them directly on the Dubro 2" Super Lite Foam. They are a direct fit (not loose or wobbly) and will not come off. The Hubs are also a direct Landing Gear Fit which makes installation very simple.

"How did you make your Tundra Tires?" is the question I get asked most often with regards to my UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL), Hobbyzone Sport Cub S (2S Brushless) "Icarus", as well as my Hobbyzone (2S Brushless) Champ Crophopper. These custom Dubro Tundras have proven themselves time and...Continue Reading

This is the Maiden Flight of my Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) that I've upgraded to the 180BL 3000KV Motor. I've also installed UMX Carbon Cub SS Navigation Lights for enhanced orientation in lower lighting conditions.

Eflite UMX J-3 Cub 3000KV Motor Upgrade w/ Nav Lights Maiden Flight (5 min 55 sec)

The Eflite 180BL 3000KV Motor is a direct fit replacement to the stock 180BL 2500KV Motor. You'll just have to switch 2 of the power wires to get the Motor spinning in the correct direction. The stock 5.75 x 2.5 "Stump Puller" Prop has been fitted on a Small Parts CNC Aluminum UMX Prop Adapter with the Prop dynamically re-balanced.

I've also installed a set of UMX Carbon Cub SS Lights on the wing. To finish the "clean install" look, I concealed the LED Wires that run on the leading edge of the UMX J-3 Cub wing with Tamiya Masking Tape which also happens to be a close "Lockhaven Yellow". I applied two layers (one perfectly on top of each other) of it over the LED wires and trimmed to fit, finishing a very clean look.

Fuselage pieces were then re-connected using the "Tape-Tab" Method, using smaller pieces of Tape Tabs on the existing stock tape that was applied from factory, minimizing tape overlap and retaining the "clean" look.

The Eflite 3000 KV Motor performed excellently upping the Thrust and Speed considerably when mated with the stock 5.75 x 2.5 “Stump Puller” Prop. While the UMX J-3 Cub battled the wind...Continue Reading

Last night, I upgraded the stock 2500KV Motor to the 3000KV Motor on my UMX J-3 Cub. The stock 5.75x2.5 "Stump Puller" Prop has been fitted on a Small Parts CNC Aluminum UMX Prop Adapter and dynamically re-balanced.

I also installed a set of UMX Carbon Cub SS Lights on the wing. To finish the "clean install" look, I concealed the LED Wires that run on the leading edge of the UMX J-3 Cub wing with Tamiya Masking Tape which also happens to be a close "Lockhaven Yellow". I applied two layers (one perfectly on top of each other) of it over the LED wires and trimmed to fit. Looks clean!

Fuselage pieces were then re-connected using the "Tape-Tab" Method, using smaller pieces of Tape Tabs on the existing stock tape that was applied from factory, minimizing tape overlap and retaining the "clean" look.

I don't have a way of testing static thrust, but I could tell right away that there is significantly a lot more pull on my arm, as compared to stock. The UMX Carbon Cub SS Lights look awesome on this plane.

The weather looks like it will cooperate today for a few test flights.

If anything, I should see a performance identical to my Hobbyzone Sport Cub S (2S Brushless) "Icarus" when it was fitted with the 3000 KV Motor and the 5.75x2.5 "Stump Puller" Prop.

This is the Maiden Flight of my Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL).

Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) Maiden Flight - Golden Age Classic (6 min 15 sec)

It was a sunny yet cold 34 degrees Fahrenheit at the park. Winds were however, very mild providing ideal conditions for a maiden flight and also gave me the advantage to explore the flight envelope and aerobatic characteristics of this new UMX J-3 Cub.

Prior to take-off, I installed my custom Dubro 2" Tundra Tires, which are a personal preference for me and Cubs and Champs. I also performed a control surface check and found the ailerons and the elevator deflection to be a bit lacking. Therefore, I moved the control rods of the aileron and the elevator one hole closer in towards the fuselage (which is the same setup as my Hobbyzone Sport Cub S 2S Brushless "Icarus"). Using an Eflite 2S 280 mAh 30C Lipo, I used the wing strut fuselage connecting points as a measuring guide and placed my Lipo Battery's midpoint right in between the wing strut fuselage connecting points. Then I set the Timer on my DX6 to 6 minutes and prepared to taxi for take-off.

Upon take-off, I could already feel that this was going to be a great maiden flight. The flight characteristics of this new UMX J-3 Cub were nearly identical to that of my custom 2S Brushless Hobbyzone Sport Cub S "Icarus" (when equipped with the Eflite 180 BL 2500 KV Motor and Eflite 5.75 x 2.5 Prop combo), making me feel right at home on the sticks...Continue Reading

A slow with snow "merry go round" flight duet with my Hobbyzone Champ Crophopper (2S Brushless with Ailerons) and Mike "Deuces Wild" Frontiero flying his Eflite UMX Carbon Cub SS at David Lorenz Park. As the last snow storm left a good layer of fresh virgin powder snow, we did a pretty good job of "exploring the spaces of the studio" as well as both of our batteries' LVC limits when faced with 39' F temps.

A flight music video with my Parkzone Ultra Micro Custom 2S Brushless P-40 Warhawk.

Parkzone Ultra Micro P-40 Warhawk (2S Brushless) "Stella" - Music Video (3 min 18 sec)

Winds at the park during this flight were gusting and constantly changing directions, making the flight unpredictable and a bit unsettling. Fortunately, the AS3X and the 2S Brushless power provided excellent air authority over the constantly changing conditions as I was able to combat the wind through an aerobatic flight and bring her home safely.

"This flight is dedicated to Stella and Family. As the wind is ever-changing and unpredictable, your wings are strong and you'll overcome whatever challenges the winds of life brings. Have faith."

Here is my first video of 2016, taking to the skies with my custom-built Easysky / Horizon Hobby FW-190D (2S Brushless) "Simone."

Easysky / Horizon Hobby FW-190D (2S Brushless) "Simone" - Sunset Flight (4 min 57 sec)

It's been a while since I've flown my custom 2S Brushless Focke Wulf, however I managed to squeeze in 2 flights today in some fairly brisk temps. As the sun was slowly descending in its icy halo glow, I was able to open up Simone to some aerobatic flight. With the Fuselage of an Easysky FW-190D and the Internals of a UMX Beast 3D, Simone is one quick and agile Warbird, especially after the 2S Brushless Conversion, yet still retains her docile flight characteristics for smooth flight.

(PLEASE READ THIS FIRST) A New Year's Eve 2015 Snow Take-Off / Landing Flight with my Hobbyzone 2S Brushless with Dual Servo Ailerons (3000 KV / GWS 5030 Prop) Champ Crophopper.

Hobbyzone (2S Brushless w/ Ailerons) "Champ Crophopper" - 2015 End Flight (3 min 36 sec)

My 2015 year could best be described within this cold landscape flight. There were many ups and downs with bumpy terrain that I had to overcome. While I had achieved success with my professional life (working in an Office during the day and Coaching at night), I also had to say goodbye this year to a beloved friend of 15 years who is no longer in this world in my personal life. I fell into a deep depression, unbeknownst to others.. with the days appearing to slip by like the cold dust of the snow. But I somehow made the push to keep going through this year, trying to make a difference in the lives of others. Things are seldom ever perfect in this world, but if there is anything I've learned this year, its the response to these imperfections like the bumpy terrain of life that truly matters.

Farewell 2015. And here's to making the best out of 2016!

Happy Holidays to all watching!! This is a first flight of my Power Up 3.0 Paper Airplane System where you can fold your own airplane and attach this Receiver - Spar - Brushed Propeller System on your own paper creation. Using the Power Up 3.0 App that you can download for free for iPhone or Android, you can control Thrust and Rudder (2-Channel) during your flight. As I'm visiting my parents in Tracy, CA for Christmas Break, this was a perfect way to still be able to go out and fly.

Power Up 3.0 Airplane System Maiden Flight - Paper Dreams (6 min 36 sec)

When I built my paper airplane, I also attached .040 lightweight carbon fiber spars across the wing and within the spine of the body, increasing its rigidity and resistance to flopping around in the wind. Flights of 10 minutes can be achieved and charging takes anywhere from 25-30 minutes on a USB cable. The system is configured for a "pusher prop" type airplane and thrust is created from a brushed motor. Using your iPhone or Android, you can control the Rudder at the rotation of your wrist. Thrust is controlled with your thumb sliding up or down on the phone screen.

As you can see in the video, flights can be quite challenging. When flying this system, be prepare to set your expectations of RC Flight to "lets see how long we can keep this paper airplane flying." Fortunately, there were only light winds at the park, and after some light adjustments to the Elevons on my paper...Continue Reading

A December 18, 2015 winter wonderland Snow Float Maiden Flight with my Hobbyzone Custom (2S Brushless w/ Dual Servo Ailerons) "Champ Crophopper" at Arapaho Regional Park. There's nothing like the peace and calm of flying over snow.

Taking some .047 Music Wire, I re-duplicated the Front Connecting Strut Arm to replace the stock Front Connecting Arm of my UMX Carbon Cub SS Floats (with the front arm fitment for a Champ instead). Then I created a round foam "Keystone" that holds the rear UMX Carbon Cub SS Floats Bracket and is attached to the underbelly of the Champ Crophopper with Industrial Velcro. The section of the fuselage where the Velcro is attached to has a single layer of packing tape, making any future removal of that foam "Keystone" easy and damage-free.

These floats have seen many snow flights with my UMX Carbon Cub SS and my Hobbyzone Sport Cub S (2S Brushless) "Icarus", so now its Champ Crophopper's time to wear these "shoes."

REMAKE -- (MUSIC VIDEO EDITION: While listening to the "Fate Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works" OST as I was watching the original Champ Crophopper Sunset Flight Video, I discovered that the Champ Crophopper Sunset Flight scenes were completely synced to the music soundtrack. With just a few minor video edits, here is the Music Video Edition of the Sunset Flight of Champ Crophopper!)

Hobbyzone "Champ Crophopper" (2S Brushless w/ Ailerons) - Music Video (3 min 3 sec)

An aerobatic sunset flight with my Hobbyzone Custom 2S Brushless with Dual Servo Ailerons "Champ Crophopper." I've fabricated my own custom Landing Gear Set using .047 Music Wire, duplicating the original bends of the stock Champ Landing Gear but also lengthening the legs of the Custom Gear Set for a higher prop clearance and stance. The .047 Music Wire Custom Landing Gear Set along with the Dubro Custom 1-3/4" Tundra Tires provide firm, yet shock-absorbing properties, delivering excellent ground handling and clearance.

This is the plane with the spirit that says, "We can change our fate.. Nothing is truly set in stone. I can and I will."

Some of us in life have experienced what it feels like to be placed in roles or be given stereotypes in which we sometimes feel like we could never truly break free from. I intended this plane (which was originally designed to be a Basic 3-Channel Slow Flight Trainer) to be a symbol and an example that if given the chance, can break free from the constructs of its original design to be something unique, and something special. This ideal was best portrayed by Dusty Crophopper from the Disney Movie, Planes:

Working on another UMX PT-17, this is the Test Flight of my experimental 1S UMX PT-17 Conversion to my rendition of a UMX PT-23A.

Eflite UMX PT-17 Conversion to a UMX PT-23A "Pegasus" - 1S Test Flight (3 min 26 sec)

RC Groups Initial Blog Write-Up Process with Photos: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2549654

Using the 2nd UMX PT-17 "Pegasus" in my fleet, I've decide to experiment with her as a test candidate for my UMX PT-23A Conversion. Being a single-wing Primary Trainer, she is a much faster 1S UMX Plane vs. the UMX PT-17 due to the reduced drag from the lack of the Top Wing. Although she has one less wing, her floaty and slow flight characteristics are still prevalent with this Conversion.

As most of the fields I fly at are currently encased under snow and ice, I chose to fly at the nearest thawed Track and Field location. Conditions at the field at 3:55pm were at a frigid 11 degrees F. Wind conditions were very mild with an average wind of 2.5 mph and a gust range of 3.9 mph. Using (2) of my Miniaviation 1S 3.7V 220MAH 45C Lipos, I was able to get 1-2 minutes of flight time out of each battery, as I normally would reach 5-6 minutes per flight. Following the success of my latest 2S Brushless Conversion, the UMX PT-17 with Dual Servo Ailerons "Bella", I've decided to experiment with my other older, and more flown 1S Brushed Motor UMX PT-17 "Pegasus".

If you haven't seen her old flight videos, my UMX PT-17 "Pegasus" started out her life 5 months ago as an experimental UMX PT-17 using parts from a scrapped UMX Beast 3D to test out a Linked Aileron System, similar to the UMX Beast 3D to assist with the anemic roll rate that is inherent with this model:

And also her Flight Video, also taken 5 months ago.. and yes, that was a bird at the end of the video that went after her to which I responded with the Scissors Maneuver which the bird didn't see coming, lol:
