After crashing into a tree a couple of weeks ago, I just needed to replace a couple of servo gears in one servo, and straight the tail control rod, and the strudy Xtron was ready to go again!

The weather here is usually pretty nasty at this time of year
- lots of rain & wind
- but yesterday was a beautiful day, with a low winter sun, and not much cloud or wind...

I took the opportunity to get a few flights in on my CX250, CX450, Xtron 500 & Trex 600
- these days, I'm working on my inverted flight
- trying to get smooth inverted figure-of-8 circuits...

Wow, it's December already!

Yesterday, I had my best flying session in quite while, with some golden-oldies, and some new favorites!

- CopterX CX250 (Align Swash etc)
- CopterX CX450 (lots of Align & Tarot parts )

Well, I finally got it finished, and gave it a quick fly last night before it got too dark!

- interesting build too
- my first time to use a kbar-mini - seemed easy to setup, and ok so far in flight...
- the blade tracking isn't 100%, but probably I need to balance the blades

Somehow, I lost the blade holder at some point

Looking forward to getting some more flights on it soon, I hope!

Hopefully do some videos next time I'm out with it...

Ok, at last, I am making progress with my Xtron 500 build!

Built the basic heli now
- just the electronics, servos, motor etc needed...

The build so far has been pretty straight forward
- I have built the tail as per the manual
- but the tail pitch range looks too small in the counter-torque direction
- so it looks like I need to swap the tail blade holders over to give more range ...

Also, the Tail pitch rod control guides were impossible to get on the tail boom
- so I ended up cutting them, and then will glue them in position

Hopefully I can get the rest of the heli built this week,...

This is my second mobius
- recorded at 1080p
- it seems to have a bad buzzing problem on the audio
- gets worse after about 4:30

Had a day (ok, an hour) of Fun Flying and inverted practice
- I must have clocked up over 10 mins of inverted over the course of my 7 or 8 main flights today...

Here's a little video of my Trex 600e at sunset
- repaired, and flying quite nicely
- getting the Microbeast setup better all the time
- probably still too much expo, though, so I'll try reducing that next time...

I 'repaired' canopy with glue, and tape!
- it looks pretty bad on the video, but it's not noticeable from the ground

I crashed my Trex 600 today - with an On-board Mobius to capture the action
- the camera flew off in the accident, and it took me about 10 mins to find the damned thing
- fortunately the camera was totally undamaged, if not the heli!

Here's the resulting video
- I cut down the middle section where I was hunting for the camera
- but feel free to skip through this anyway, as it's still too long
- I do a post-crash analysis at the end, still using the Mobius...

Still not sure why, but I really messed up a simple inverted hover
- guess I need more sim time!

At the weekend, I fitted a Mobius Action Camera to my Trex 600e Pro DFC
- using the handle-bar adapter, and some kitchen towel to bulk it up a bit!

The skids on my 600e are the Carbon Fibre type, which makes them a little wider than the normal ones, I think
- but I still needed to pad them out with a little kitchen towel in order to get a good firm grip from the Mobius Handle Bar fitment adapter.
- I think the kitchen towel should also help with damping down vibrations.

I tried the Mobius in 1080p/30fps mode, and 720p/60fps mode
- the 1080p/30 mode gives better results, with a wider field of view, which I think gives a much better view from the heli.

I'm pretty pleased with the quality of the results, and the camera is reasonably cheap, and light enough for a 600 size heli
- but the Camera & Adapter may be a little heavy for a 450 size heli for example
- and the Handle-bar adapter probably wouldn't fit properly on a 450 anyway, so a different mounting technique would be needed for this size of heli.

Following a couple of crashes with my Gooch450, I decided I needed a fresh start
- and I've been interested in the CopterX 450 for a while

Quality-wise, I'm fairly familiar with what to expect from CopterX
- as seen below, I've built a CX250, and been fairly happy with that
- the price is incredibly cheap, and the quality reasonable
- and Align parts or Tarot parts can always be used if there's a need for better or different build quality.

I've also used quite a lot of CopterX parts on the Gooch450
- main tails booms, FBL heads (DFC & non-DFC), main shafts, tails etc

So, it seemed only logical to give the CopterX 450 frames a go as well
- so here goes!

It's been a while since I updated this blog, so here goes...

The CX250 has been flying well
- a few crashes when practicing inverted without really giving myself enough height!

Anyway, I'm still using the original bearings, but after the last crash I found there was a lot of resistance with the new belt I fitted
- so I decided to use the TT upgrade using the Tarot I kit I bought at the time of original purchase.

Things were a tight fit, but eventually it all fitted together.

Flying so far with the TT has been pretty good
- no problems to report....
- perhaps a little more power available.

The V200D02 canopy ended up getting pretty trashed after a few crashes
- so I replaced with the V200D03 canopy
- which I think looks cooler
- but is actually very poor for visibility
- so I added some yellow/orange flashes which really help at a distance...

Too much wind & rain to fly today, so time to update the old blog ...

I think I'm on top of the cyclic jitters now
- I replaced the CopterX swash, which was a little sloppy with the Align one
- but this didn't make much (or any) difference.

The trick was definitely just to reduce the cyclic gyro gain down from the default 40 to 20.
- at 20, the cyclic jitters are virtually gone, so I may reduce it still more to, say, 18.
- but I don't see it as a big problem at the moment, as it's pretty good, in all but windy conditions

I was worried about reducing the gyro gain too much, and how this might effect the gyro performance, but it looks like this reduction is really just a function of the mass, inertia, geometries of the 250 compared to the 450 size.

The gyro default gain of 40 seems to work fine on my 450 with the same gyro & servos...

I also put an Align DS425M on the tail, as the Savox 0257MG I had on there was really just a cyclic servos, and not really fast enough for the tail.

So, so far, it seems to fly very well
- fast, and stable, yet agile, and fun!

I still have some play in the main bearings
- and will replace those with align parts

I'll also look at getting the Kevlar belt, as recommended
- seems like a good upgrade to improve reliability....

Also, it may be worth getting harder dampers
- as this may help reduce cyclic jitter

Here are some photos with a V200D02 canopy that I bought
- good visibility, and large enough for the 1000mAh LiPos

Looks like Monsoon Season here in Scotland right now!

I just put 5 packs through my CX250
- first chance to really fly it on an open field, with little wind

I've moved the balls to 12mm, reduced the cyclic extents, and cyclic gains a little
- however, I still get some cyclic oscillation
- so I still have some work to do on this (less gyro gain, or better swash, or plastic blades or less head-speed!)

However, the flying was great! Really fast, and maneuverable
- I was just doing FFF, high banked turns, mini tail-up hurricanes, high-speed passes
- no loops, flips or inverted - I want to get 10+ good flights on this before I start doing loops!
- but it flew really well

A little less stable & solid in the air than the 450, but at the same time a whole lot less scarey!

Right now, I'm pretty happy with it
- of course, that will all change if it suddenly explodes in the air on me!

For me, it's what I wanted from a 250
- something to bridge the gap between the V120 & 450

Also, it runs for 6+ minutes on 1000mAh LiPos, using the MasterCP canopy (with a couple of extra mounting holes)

Well, I'm back in the air with the CX250
- just a new Main shaft & feathering shaft needed in the end
- the blades were a bit scuffed, so I swapped them out for some Align CFs I'd already bought in anticipation..

Seems to fly really smoothly
- but I need to give it more of a check out
- the tail does seem a little 'lively'

And confession time
- my gyro twitching was caused my bad soldering

- for quickness, I'd just lightly tacked on the ESC Deans connector
- and meant to go back and do a good job before I took it out flying
- but stupidly, in my excitement to get going, I forgot to do exactly that
- and one of the connections was coming loose, causing the twitchiness!

So, apart from that, self-induced problem, the CX250 has been good so far
- but I need to get a few more flights under my belt to see how it really handles, and how long the moving parts last.

My Tarot upgrade parts, and Align bearings have also arrived
- I'm actually tempted to just build a whole new Tarot Align heli out of that lot!
- just need frame parts, servos, rx gyro! Well, ok, maybe not !

I was getting an intermittent electrical/gyro problem
- where the heli would twitch violently

I thought I'd tracked it down to a possible loose connection between the Rx & gyro
- and after I fixed this, it seemed ok for a brief flight.

However, the problem returned, and while I was doing little tests to try to figure it out, it got more violent, and the blades hit concrete!
- and, boom!
- blades go in two directions!

Pity, as I thought I was getting somewhere with this heli!

Completed my trial build using just the standard CX250 parts.
- I need to go round and threadlock everything and set the Swash & Gyro up a bit better
- but it seems to fly quite nicely and stably
- No, or at least very little, tail shake, doing a brief fly round my garden

Parts so far:
CX250 SE Kit
Align MX250 Motor
3 x Savox 0257MG on cyclic
1 x Savox 0257MG on tail
CX3X1000 Gyro
FrSky D8R-II Plus Rx
Hobbywing 25A ESC

Gyro Settings
- standard Soft3D setting

Cyclic Servo Ball
- 10 mm from centre
(at 12mm get cyclic oscillation)

Tail Servo Ball
- 6.5mm from centre
(at 8 mm get Tail oscillation)

- Tail belt seems stiffer than I would have thought, but also seems to be loosening up
- slight play in top bearing
- servos are a tight squeeze, and currently links aren't vertical....

As a first attempt at a blog, I thought I'd describe my adventures in getting a CopterX 250 up & flying

So far so good
- no obvious bends or cracks
- All moving parts seem to move freely, with no gittyness.
- I can see what people mean about the belt being fragile though!
