Boyo- wait til Celina Ohio sees what I just designed- they'll throw me right in the hoosegow (that's what they call it in Ohio, right?). Our customer Rick bought a Freewing B-17 with Supermax Crashproofing, and he asked if I could make a bomb bay that works for it. I'm finally finished, and we now have a bomb bay for the 1600mm Freewing B-17, as well as a bigger one for the 1875mm B-17 designed by Mr Liang (the former HC Hobby designer), and one for the FMS B-25. All 3 of these planes can carry the weight of the loaded bomb bay (110g plus 2 eggs, or 125g plus 4 eggs for the 1875mm B-17), and more importantly they can FIT the payload in there. It's got outer doors for the plane belly, and an inner release for the payload that's on a sequencer, so the doors open, then the bombs drop, and then you close the doors when you want to. You can also put the drop on a different channel, so you choose exactly when to drop the eggs We have GOT to get a wing of B-17s and B-25s together to drop a barrel of eggs into a huge frying pan for a video. We'll be selling the Bomb bays as kits, with all the plans and materials, a video, and even half of the glue (You get Foam Tac with it, but you'll still need a hot glue gun) It takes about 3 hours to assemble and install, and it fits in the planes with or without our Supermax Crashproofing kits installed. We'll have a video of the bay in action soon. Who's in?

The other day I flew around the yard with a HawkFighter for Dan's father, Ed, and Joe B. Showed them some of my dog-and-foamie-show moves. I did a slinky of low loops over the pups. Slipped between branches in swooping high speed curves. Spiraled down to 10 inches off the grass inside a box of trees.

"Wow, Steve, you so totally rock the flying world that you should be president of the universe," they said. (I'm paraphrasing)

I said, "Thank you!" (I might have said it in my head, where the rest of the conversation may also have been)

Then I said "OK, everybody move back, I'm landing over here".

So I came in for a graceful approach, power off, gliding smoothly into a tree trunk. My HawkFighter did a nice quick dismount-style double flat spin into the ground. I inspected my transmitter for factory defects. Or maybe it was a gust of wind? I retrieved my HawkFighter and picked some grass out of her teeth.

"Nice landing," they said. (I'm paraphrasing)

"No problem!" I said.

"Watch this," I said. I relaunched the plane.

"Wow!" they said. "You can just FLY it after that?"

"Still flies great even after that kind of abuse, and that was about crash number 16 for this plane" I bragged. Yes, I brag that I land my plane on the nose a lot. It's my unique flying style. How to Achieve True Balance and Inner Peace- cheap!

It's easy! You get inner peace from doing guru stuff, or flying an RC plane, right? Okay, there's that half. So what's this about balance?

As all you budding X-1 test pilots know, all planes must be in balance to “straighten up and fly right”. This is usually fairly easy to achieve, if you happen to have a plane from a manufacturer who actually knows where the CG on the thing is. If they only have a fair idea (that's half of the manufacturers, I think) you're in for some wild rides discovering where that CG really is. You just need nerves of steel, and some nice incremental weights to balance your prop driven seesaw. You'll find it sooner or later. I’d love to be a guy who can spout formulas at you for determining the CG location but, unfortunately, I'm not. This article is about a more pedestrian problem- namely, what to use for balance weights.

Along with half of mankind, I have some limited knowledge of the periodic table of elements, the handy diagram that lists everything by atomic weight. I also know that using heavier stuff for balance weights is good because it takes up less space, right? So, I just consult the table for the heavy stuff to come up with some ideas for materials to use as nose weight in my hundred dollar foamie. Let's consider some of that “weighty matter”:

Pretty simple, right? You can make the world a better place while you're having fun, and pat yourself on the back, too (not recommended while you're flying). Plus, you'll actually be happier from the result. This is pretty good. When you think about it, how many things in life have a triple payback?

In this article, we're going to help you with Number One, which will help you stay at the field doing Number Two, which will add Step Number Three (technically, not part of "two easy steps", but who's counting?). Step Three is this:

So- how, you may ask, can I get in on all this garbage picking' fun?

If you're an average American, you have recycling in your town. You're already doing that, but here's something better- re-USING. If you keep certain things out of the recycle bin, those will help you keep your plane out of the recycle bin - a win-win situation. Howdy pilots! Still working on new crashproofing designs (for new planes) and having a ROUSING success! We did our little show at the NEAT fair, which consists of flying a Hawkfighter fast and wacky down in the grass until I crash it- and then simply launching it again! This certainly garners interest any time people see it right in front of them! So, we made some new converts, but since we're preaching crashproofing your planes, that's not much of a surprise. Howdy all pilots!

Steve from Killerplanes.com here (and crashproofplanes.com)- I'm new to the world of blogging- I have an actual REAL case of ADHD, and if I get near blog sites or stuff that's interesting to me (like this website) I find that the first time I come up for air is usually about 2AM- and that's when I start at noon! Danger, Will Robinson! When I get into this stuff all work stops, and since I have to get work done...

We've been working on Crashproofing for foam planes now for about 2 years, but it took a while (like a year) and a lot of reminders from the Lovely Denise for me to listen to what she was telling me, namely that just because design and such was easy for ME, didn't mean that it was easy for everybody else. She finally convinced me to open a business, and has regretted it ever since. (If any of you have seen some of our yootoob videos, you know who the Lovely is-one of the best handheld plane shooters I've seen!)

We'll both be at the Neat Fair this coming weekend in our booth, just behind the PARKFLYER flightline, showcasing lots of planes with our Crashproofing Kits installed in them. If you've seen our videos, you've seen me stabbing various planes into the ground at high speed (a relative term, but in this case up to about 45MPH). The most notable thing about all these planes is that they BOUNCE, and most of the time you can just pick them up and launch them again.
