Have not done a blog in a long time, so I thought I would post up a video of my Phoenix II powered sailplane. I've been flying this thing since February and so far have 88 flights. I have had a lot of fun with this airplane so far. I have taught my buddies grandson how to fly on the Phoenix II, enjoy the slopes, and enjoy thermal flight. Owning the Phoenix II has been uneventful when it comes to keeping it flying. So far I have only replaced the motor and canopy. Anyhow here is a bit of video.

Well I just sold my 14MZ and have switched to Airtronics SD10G radio systems. I have not used Airtronics since the early 90's. They are local, so any kind of service needed can be done quickly.

Well I just acquired a Phase 3 EDF F-16. I plan to toss this thing together for the West Coast Big Jolt event. It should be a fun model to fly. Now to pick the F-16 paint scheme.

The Pomona Valley model Airplane Club is pleased to announce the Big Jolt Electric RC Event. The Event will be held at the Prado Air Park in Chino, CA on Friday, September 10th through Sunday, September 12th 2010. This event is open to all electric Aircraft, including EDF Jets. As usual, food will be on site at noon and vendors will be onsite. There will also be a Pilot's Reception Friday night, and a Hanger BBQ Saturday night held in the company of the real P-51D Lady Alice, and the new N3N-3 Yellow Peril. This is an AMA sanctioned event and current AMA membership is requred. More information will be here shortly, so keep checking back. In the meantime, Check out the Flyer.

After a year of sitting on my work bench, the Sea Fury has made it airborne! The flight was something to always remember. I did not have to trim a thing!

Here is my basic EP setup for the Thunder Tiger Sea Fury:

Motor: Hacker A60-22S
ESC: Castle Creations ICE HV 80
Batteries: LiPo 10s 5000 mah 30c
Prop: APC 18x10 (thin hub)
Landing Gear: Robart 605hd

Now the big mystery is the Center of Gravity ( c of g ) for this airplane. The Manual said 3 3/4" from the leading edge of the wing. That was too far forward on the wing. So I decided to balance the airplane where logic would best tell you to balance the airplane. In my next post, I will have the correct ( C of G ) Center of Gravity, or balance point, whatever you would like to call the CG. This information is not out there for the airplane, so I want to make sure people can search it out with the search feature.

So it seems that when you search out correct ESC settings for Axi motors, you can't seem to find anyone who know what they are talking about. With a bit of digging, I found these settings on Axi's website. I hope this helps anyone with AXI motors.

For all AXI motors*:
TIMMING 24°
FREQUENCY 8 kHz,
NUMBER OF POLES 14*

* for AXI 2217/5H set NUMBER OF POLES 8, all other
AXI motors has number of poles 14

I caught Jeff Fassbinder at the field today. He had a Byron's A-4 that he stuffed a hair dryer into. The thing sounds pretty cool for a EDF. Here is a short video.

Well I spotted the GeeBee Pylon racers at the AMA show, told myself I had to have one. Unfortunately DW ran out of stock at AMA Con. I spotted DW Foamies at the RCX show Saturday. Dominic talked with me for a bit, and explained a few things about the airplane, and how they go together and fly. I was mainly interested in the GeeBee because again, I saw how smooth they were flying at the AMA show. Well in the end I purchased both the Shoestring and the GeeBee, along with motors and props. Here Soon I will start building these two birds, starting with the Shoestring. Here are some basic specs, and my starting setup thoughts;

Shoestring:
Wing Span: 38.5 inch
Length: 38.5 inch
AUW 15~19 oz

Starting Setup:
Motor: Scorpion S2215 1860KV
ESC: Team Orion Avionics Captain 25
Battery: Not super sure yet....
Servos: Hitec HS-55
Radio System: DX7 W/ AR6100 receiver

Well here we go. I am using 4 HS125mg servos from Hitec for the split flaps and the alerons. To use these servos, you wll need to take one of the two blocks given for each servo and split it in half. That way you have three blocks for the three servo mounting ears. I purchased two 24" servo extendions, but really you can use 18" no problem. That is if you use the HS125.

Well here we go. I just had one of these Spitefires air shipped to me. I want to get this bird in the air and dialed in next weekend. So this week, I will spend a few hours each night assembling this bird. I will be installing a Vision Hobbies 55-580 electric motor. I think that with a 6 cell Lipo battery this motor should be just fine. This airplane should weigh no more than 10.5lbs. I plan on using a 3 blade 14x7 prop at first. Below is a picture of the Spitfire after I unpacked it from the box.
