I decided to build 3 40oz EPP wings.
All versions of The Windrider Bee 48" . The Bee, Bee II, and the BeEvolution.
I want these planes to fly fast but not too fast and I want them built tough.
I would like to be able to have three pilots fly them at the same time in what we like to call a "DS furball".
This is not combat, more like formation flying with a little bit of rubbing and bumping.
The Bee and Bee II should fly identical but the build will differ slightly.
I'm starting with the BeEvolution.

· BeEvolution - a molded EPP combat wing from Ming at Windrider.

Here are the modifications:
· 5 cell batt pack

JW Fuses a la Stu:

I weighed my last fuse at various stages and will list if available. Also, the pictures are of several different fuse builds so try not to get too confused.

1. Glue the rear of fuse with full strength goop. Let dry. (2.1oz)

2. "Sand it round" with 50 grit. Not 80 or 120 etc. I use a belt from a belt sander cuz I can't find 50 grit at home depot or walmart. 50 grit seems to pull up less chunks, go figure.

3. Add whatever reinforcements you want. My latest and greatest is 4 pieces of .080" fiberglass. 80 cents for a 4ft rod. End result seems as stiff as the carbon ones I've made.

4 Create a noseweight space. I slice a long rectangle of foam out of the front of the fuse, cut the sides off and goop them back in their original spot.

5. Thin goop the raw EPP. Several coats if you feel like it but not too thick. I use 2 coats max.

6. Spackle over the gooped fuse. Hint, wet EPP or watery spackle helps with the first application, especially over thinned goop.

7. Sand, respackle, sand, Repeat until satisfied.

Several people have asked how I do my flames...

The top is covered in one solid color and then the flames are cut out of Monokote or Ultracoat and added. I grabbed a gif from an r/c car site a while back and I modified it in PhotoShop (scale, skew) to suit my needs. Ultracoat is easiest because you can easily transfer the image to the paper backing. With Monokote it's best to 3m77 the stencil to the backing and cut around it.
It takes only about 1/2 an hour to cut out one wing.
Apply the flames in one piece (per wing) very carefully using the lowest heat setting that will activate the adhesive. Start near the leading edge and work along it. You can go back and adhere the flames then turn up the heat and seal really well. The Fluoro Monokote always makes an ugly gluey mess. Clean up with acetone.

I forgot to post this one. I finished it last year but was skunked at several attempts to maiden. This is my heaviest JW yet at 105oz. It's still a single spar kit but I upgraded to solid carbon rod and carbon subTE spars.
I've switched to using the fluoro on the flames to help see the wing when it's coming at me. It helps.
I got it to 200mph last month so I'm happy. I think that makes it 4 of my JW builds that have gone at least that fast. I think there's more in it if I can keep it together.

Here's a great little 24" plane now being sold through Matin at NCFM.
The Half Bad.
I'm not really happy with my build on this one and it still needs some tweaking to get if flying well. Other folks are flying them from light to really heavy. I have another kit so we will see...

I wanted to see what would happen if I built a Windrider Bee capable of 200MPH. I'm not sure it will go that fast but didn't want the build to hold it back.
The results...
4 layers of 3M 8959
Carbon Sub TE spar
Standard Tube Spar with steel rod insert
Leading edge I-Beam config carbon rods
Ribbon spar
5 cell AA pack
Standard Hitec Digital servos moved out to 9.5" from CL
Full TE w 4" fixed inboard and out.
4-40 linkages.
Spruce and balsa winglets
NO Laminate Film!!.
NO glassed or carbon elevons.
CG has been tested at the usual 8-1/2" but it's much more stable at 8-1/4". Inverted flight is still good but I'm going to have to do some tweaking.

Speeds: Maiden 166MPH at Weldon.
200? Maybe.

UPDATE: 2/19/13 - Got the Bee up to 190 at Weldon in winds 30-42. Really felt good just when I was about to rip off the fixed trailing edges and start over.

UPDATE: 5/26/13 - I broke 200 at Weldon in really smooth winds 30-50mph.
Final speed was 204mph. Really happy with the performance of the Bee. Pretty cool to do a punch-out to speck altitude in about 5 seconds.
The general consensus is I need to bag the elevons if I want to go any faster, they are quite flexible even cut down and covered with strapping tape.

I never took a pic of my original Alula. It was too ugly. This is the Alula Evo. Uncovered and unadulterated Arcel foam. Flames are painted on with paint pens and sharpie.

I was lucky to be asked to build a JW with an experimental Peter Wick airfoil (don't know which one).
Turned out pretty nice. It took a bit more dialing in of the CG but I managed to get a 206 over Thanksgiving week up at Weldon.

I built an acro DS Bee I call the Killer Bee (original huh?)
40oz. 3 layers of strapping tape, sub TE spar, 5 cell battery, 4-40 pushrods, servos moved out a little. Clocked her at 139 out at Weldon for an airframe record.

Update: Recorded a 165 at Weldon last Wednesday. Very happy with the performance but at those speeds I found myself running out of elevator due to flex. I will try something else on the next one.

I smacked this plane into the ground at over 100MPH on her maiden. Not enough pitch control but I DS'd her anyway.
Ready for another shot with about 2 oz less noseweight.
Update: I smacked the Mako into the ground again and busted an elevon. This time I entered a rough backside at Weldon with too little airspeed. Not an easy plane to fly at this loading. At the time I was doing more test flights and moving the CG back even more with about 2.5oz of stick-on lead by the fin. Pitch control is much better but slow speed handling is non-existant. Got a 160+ somewhere during those test flights so I know it's fast.
Update: I managed to tie the airframe record last time out. 181mph.
I'm still making improvements on her.

Edit: The Mako lives! The plane simply needs more elevon and that's what it's getting. Stay tuned...

I killed my last Bee in a 110+MPH DS crash. I broke a std size karbonite servo for the first time. Here's it's replacement. 21oz classic Predator build. The only difference was I used 3m extreme instead of the 3" windrider strapping tape. I like the 3" tape but on my last build it wrinkled under heat and I wanted to avoid that on this one.

Update: This plane is still going great. I cut down the tips a little to move the CG forward. They are still longer than stock but 1/4" shorter in height. I also added about 5 layers of clear tape to the LE in front of the CG. Balance is just slightly forward of 8-1/2" and perfect. The performance of the Bee never ceases to amaze me. On high rates with a bit of expo and I'm getting a fantastic but controlable roll rate and really tight inside and outside loops.

Weasel Pro Rebuild.

This is the third rebuild I’ve done on this Weasel so I decided to try something a little different.
I still have an original kit stashed away if this doesn't fly well.

Balsa fin.
New elevons made to match the airfoil.
Bottom hinged.
Full strapping tape covered wing,
Gooped fuse.

I was lucky enough to get 2 Rebel kits from the Predator. Here's the first one...
Edit: I finally got to DS her at Weldon and we clocked a 170mph on her maiden. She handles well at speed but kinda skids around on the frontside. Most likely due to the cut down elevons.
It's your standard 46oz combat wing build…
