Today was a fantastic day for flying in Simpsonville, SC. It was in 89-90* with a soft wind and beautiful clouds. We had 2 GWS Slow Sticks, eFlite Extra 260 profile, Hawk, UM SU-26xp Sukhoi and a UM J-3 Cub. We have a new 10x10 canopy to set up for some shade on these hot days as well as a table that is getting too small.

This was the first flight for one slow stick, the other slow stick had a new wing, and both the Extra 260 and Hawk had been rescued and rebuilt. Travis folded his slow stick wing doing a loop, my slow stick broke a prop and motor mount after I tried a quick take off and the prop hit the ground, the hawk stalled the right wing on the final approach and went in nose first 6' off the ground and broke a servo mount, the Extra 260 started a roll and decided not to finish it and landed nose first breaking the prop and the UM J-3 cracked the wing where it had been creased before. The only plane to "survive the day" was the UM SU-26xp.

Here are some pics of the UM Sukhoi and my walk of shame to pick up the Extra 260....Continue Reading

So Travis was given a very used Eflite Extra 260 profile. It had seen some much better days before we got our hands on it. I enjoy fixing planes, trucks and helis so I got my grubby little hands on it and went to work.

Stock this plane has 14 braces and when Keith gave it to us it had 6 and all of them were either broken or had come unglued. Apparently he had it set up where he could just wall it and it would break off 4 braces under the wings. His idea of fixing it was "More Glue!" so I had to break most of it off and start from scratch. I had to replace the bracing running down the fuse with some slightly larger carbon rod but it was the smallest rod the LHS had. But Keith was nice enough to give us the park 370 and a ESC that he used on it with the stipulation that "When you crash it and destroy it, give me the motor and ESC back." That will work great for us

So after weighing it I have found that its a little on the heavy side. Recommended weight w/o battery is 182-220g, actual is around 240g w/o battery. Recommended weight w/ battery is 220-270g, actual is around 325g. I wanted it a little heavy due to the fact we dont have anywhere inside to fly so it will be flown only outside.

So the slow stick ended up not being so free. Nobody had any pinions for an inrunner around here so I grabbed a outrunner mount and went to the LHS. I came back with at Rimfire power 10 so after bolting everything up the slow stick is no producing 350watts at just at 30amps. Hope the wing holds up...

Here are some pics of my slow stick vs. a "stock" slow stick.

So I completely forgot that I had a Slow Stick in a box under the bed that needs to be put together. This will be my 4th or 5th slow stick and I honestly cant remember which one it will be. Now that my corsair and terry are both destroyed I am harvesting the electronics and making a slow stick. This slow stick is going to have ailerons and (most likely) no landing gear.

Gearbox and inrunner (inrunner that was too small for terry), 30amp ESC (out of corsair), HS-81s (out of terry and corsair), 6100E (out of corsair), control horns (out of corsair), 6100e rx (out of corsair) and various other bits and pieces I have laying around.

The point being, This plane should be FREE!

Today is the last day I will be able to fly. This week I was cut back to 0 hours at work and today I destroyed both of my planes.

This was the Terrys first flight after putting a new power system on it and I wasnt sure how it would do. After 2 laps I noticed that the wings flexed a good bit but I decided I would try for a high speed pass. I was throttling up and it started to go into a steep dive, I pulled up and the wing snapped and proceded to bury itself into the ground and destroy the fuse/wing/motor/lipo.

Then I pulled out my corsair, got through 2 batteries and it crashed. I was doing figure eights and when I did the cross over I banked right and it kept on going. Gave it left aileron but and it started to correct slightly but it was too late. After getting it home and checking everything I found a aileron servo was dead and must have died about the time I hit full deflection on right aileron and pulled the plane to the ground. The damage was broken wing/fuse/motor/lipo.

So nothing is left for me to fly but the mSR and it get boring after about 4 batteries. Im kinda dissapointed about the corsair but I could have cared less about the terry.

Done! At least for now. There were two things that bugged me about the terrys wing right from the get go. The fact the wing bolted to the fuse about 1/3 of the way back with nothing to keep the leading edge of the wing down and the wing rotates really easy. So I added a hook in the leading edge to loop through the first support so the leading edge will stay down. Then I added some balsa on the underside of the wing in the fuse so it will keep the wings from wagging. I will maiden it tomorrow some time.

So today I decided to do something with the terry. I sat down, grabbed the tools and went to work. I
  • epoxied on the firewall/motor mount
  • installed the rx (AR500)
  • a Proton-25 amp ESC (exceed rc)
  • glued in the OLD Hitec HS-81s that came with it
  • glued on the elevator
  • glued a extra support piece
  • installed the Elite 400 (3700kv)
and did some bench testing. The battery I am running is a 3s 1000mAh 20c Blue lipo. If you cant tell I'm broke and can only afford the cheap stuff. I don't have the exact numbers but its hovering at 23-24 amps and a 230-240 watts at WOT.

I'm having some concerns with the wing staying on. As stock nylon bolts 1/3 of the way back from the leading edge hold the wing on but not straight or tight against the fuselage. Im addressing that issue tomorrow, and going to put some paint on it so its a little less gray. I have a little work to do on it before I get it completely airworthy but its a lot closer now that I had some time to start on it.

Feel free to ignore the poll, messing around with the different options

So travis got a 400 size inrunner from hobbypartz that works fantastic with direct drive. Even with a 4.1x4.1 prop on a 3s its pushing out over 25 amps and something like 300+ watts. Guess I should have gone with a 2s instead of a 3s. Anyway, tomorrow myself and travis are getting together and building planes. He is doing a blue tail UM p-51 (he dumb thumbed his P-51BL into about 5 pieces) and im putting together the Terry. Will post some pics tomorrow of the progress.
