Let see now...

I have most everything ready for Contest, I'll be CD, and not flying. Besides, I haven't really taken any time to fix up / repair any of my free flight models.

I have gotten more done to the AutoCAD files for the WACO and the AVRO. However I have not got them completed. I have several older AutoCAD files I should continue with as well. There's a DC-5, Yakolev Air-4, 1913 Dyott monoplane.

I need to get back to work on the Fokker F.VIIa as well as a couple others.

But alas, I still have the hobby room all covered up. Hopefully one day SOON I'll be done taking care of that cat...

Lets start today off with the fact that I have not been able to send that cat home yet. So the hobby room is still covered up (for protection).

I have been able to spend more time working on the plans for the AVRO and WACO. I could actually begin prototype models of both at this point, however there are several models already in progress that I really need to finish.

Lots to do around the house, so not much beyond the CAD works has been done. Once I can send the cat back home, then I could leave things out on the building board. Meaning I could actually get some modeling done.

I will be a Co-CD at an upcoming contest third weekend of August, that should be a lot of fun. Hopefully there will be a big turn out again this year.

Good day all,

I have put in several hours of drafting time at the ole computer... Sharing some time between the WACO and the AVRO.

As for the Tornado, I have assembled the rudder (needs sanding now) and the pylon as well. I have cut new side sheeting (one piece verses the two part kit side).
I got some good advice from a good source that the Tornado has a tendency to be tail heavy (as many free flight models tend to do) so I will make the pylon slot and pylon adjustable and shift the pylon when closer to completion.

I could sure get a lot more done if I could give that darn cat back to his owners.

Well, ADHD setting in I have finished cutting out ribs for a 1/2A Tornado for next years one design free flight competition. The old Jasco kit used good but slightly heavy wood. There was also quite a range of rib sizes due to the die-cut tooling.

I have made more progress on both the Avro 641 Commodore and WACO XJW-1 drawings. I need to go to the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum which is only a few hours drive from home. It would be a lot of fun let alone maybe get some good pictures of their WACO UBF.

I currently have several electric R/C scale planes in progress of some sort. they are:
Avro Anson - scaled up from Harold Towner plans
Thulin "K" - based on plans by Walt Mooney and drawings by Bjorn Karlstrom
Taylor Auster MkIII - Scaled up plans by Derek Buckmaster
Fokker F-VIIa - Based on miscellaneous drawings from the internet world

Currently I have most of my hobby room covered up to reduce damage caused by the "cat" that we are taking care of until my niece and her family can get settled in somewhere after their retirement from the Air Force. I sure hope it is soon...

I did a tid-bit of work on the Fokker recently (SBO-3), but it is a pain to get it out of it's hiding space and then have to put it right back in...

I have been trying to get back to some AutoCAD work that I have been doing, but alas not much success doing that either. I have done some to the Avro 641 Commodore and have been readying information on a WACO xjw-1 (UBF).

More as it comes along. I hope I'm not boring you all to death so to speak...

Not much done this week due to a somewhat busy work week, and all of the fun surrounding my daughters finals and graduation and party therefore...

Hopefully back to some modelling soon. Oh yeah, still got that cat to contend with too...

Hello again everyone...

Attached is new teaser of the Avro for you all to look at.

I have gotten a little further with the Fokker if you check out the other thread.

I am experiencing more of that dreaded cash flow/money crunch thing again and will be stalled again for a while. Some small tasks will continue but no major accomplishment will be expected. I have some supplies to continue the Fokker but will not have the radio or motor system for sometime.

Attached below I have a teaser of the upcoming Avro 641 Commodore, which I have been able to put a little time to on the ole AutoCAD machine...

Been rather busy with the real job so that about it for now...

So here's the newer one... Derek Buckmaster Auster Mk III scaled to 1/9th.

Still working on the wing rib patterns cause I want flaps on this model. Span works out to 48''

Wow, over 1200 hits.

Thanks to all that at least open this blog.

As stated in my last blog, not using so many words, funding for my addiction of model airplanes is going to be low for the for seeable future. Thus I find that I have a enough balsa, and other materials to continue building in some regard. But purchase of motors, batteries, servos and the like will not be often if at all.

So to step forward, I have been building on a couple of projects that were started quite awhile ago. Therefore I will continue to blog and share with you all the little bit of modeling that I am still able to do.

Wow, Been quite a while sense last post here in my blog. Busy at the real job, and trying to keep busy in general. I have been working on a number of projects.

Fokker F-VIIa (Build-Off)
I have built the basic fuselage box, stab and elevators ready for final fittings and sanding. Rudder and Fin currently on building board. I still need to finish the wing rib designs. More on my thread:

Not much free flight building this year due to having planes already. I have reconstructed the rudder for the East Wind (1/2A Nostalgia) to hopefully reduce the dutch-roll problem (front rudder). Seems to be more pronounced once I dialed in the Medalion to a good needle setting. Makes me think that the slower high torque diesil that it was designed for did not have this problem.

Other stuff still creeping along. New cad plan under way for an Avro model 641 Commodore. 1/10th scale with wingspan at 45''

I have decided to enter the "scale build-off 3" that is currently under way on the Scale Electrical Planes Group. I have been researching the Fokker F-VII for a while and thought it would make a good entry. I will design, draw and build one of the single engine versions (forerunner to the famed tri-motor Fokkers).


I also have a new peice of furnature in the hobby room. It was an ozalid blue-print machine stand in it's day and was collecting dust until I got my hands on it.

Had to take some time away from modelling as of late.

Project #1 was to construct a fabrication table for the wife's new sewing business. (picture 1) it is 4'x8'x3/4" plywood and has a 2x4 frame with 4x4 pedestals with 4" casters. I have yet to finish the lower shelf using 1/2" ply.

Project #2 was to repair the pedestal to our 80+ year old dinning room table.
(picture 2).

As you all can see, much of the hobby room has been cluttered up.

Towner Anson Project
I have both tube frame part fitted in, and need to work on some of the interior fittings. I have begun checking some of the lower formers for their fit, I think I may need to redo a couple of them due to them being too small for the postion they go into.

1/9th Auster
One side of fuslage framing completed, and about half of the other side is done.
I have worked up a more scale wing rib pattern that will allow for ailerons and flaps. I will need to double check it for the area of the slots too.

It is enjoyable to bat the ball back and forth with those willing to listen and share.

I have the lower fuselage former cut and ready for sizing and attachment to the upper portion of fuselage. I have one side of the tube frame completed and have begun the assembly of the other side.

1/9th Auster
I have completed the framing of the rudder/fin and the stabilizer/elevator. I have been working on a more accurate wing rib template. I was hoping to more closely create the flap and aileron contruction. Flap seems to be the tough part. The original on the Mark III was a split flap. This makes for a rather thin trailing edge and I have found it difficult to come up with a rib design that I like for the flap area. Of course the original wing trailing edge was nothing more that a very narrow piece of metal attached to the end of each rib.
More on this as it comes together.

I have two new prop blades ready to form around the big glass jar. Still need to taper a prop hub and such for the new prop.

Towner Anson Project
I have been readying the bottom formers of the fuselage. I figured as sturdy as the top half is, why not begin the bottom framing as well. Getting closer to gluing up the dowels to form the "tube" portion of the fuselage structure. Once the dowels are glued up, I'll need to find and do the interior paint. Then I'll need to find a dummy to sit in the pilot seat after it is created and installed.

1/9th Auster
I now have all of the tips and curved portions of the wing, stab and rudder formed and ready. After a little research, I verified that the basic stab and rudder where flat and not airfoiled in any form. Not too surprised at this, and it will make them easy to build. I have discovered in this research that the rudder fillet begins at the fuselage sides (as normal I suppose) however the stabilizer is mounted at the top of the fuselage. So how does one form the fillet if the stabilizer is covering the top of the fuselage. The secret I have discovered at least on the real Austers is that the fuselage and rudder apear to be covered prior to the mounting of the stabilizer. This presents an interesting construction aspect to the build. How do I accomplish the same basic method on such a small model???

My new A-6 design is completed. It turned out quite heavy at 1.5 grams. Prop weighs in at .3 grams so a little to loose there. I did make motor stick out of slightly heavier wood to help keep it from bowing under full torque of motor.
So at this point I will wait for first contest to see how it flies under full power. Goofing around in living room looks good to me for now.

Limited Penny Plane
I hope to have time to build a new prop for my existing LPP (skipper)

I plan to concentrate on indoor hand launch glider, A-6 and LPP for this up-coming indoor compitition season.

Towner Anson Project
I have laid out the design for the tube framing which I will use hardwood dowels to replicate. I plan to do this work at the same time as a 1/9th scale Auster Mk-III. Both require use of dowels to simulate the steel tube construction of the original where it is visible thru canopy glass.

1/9th Auster
This is a scaled up version of Derek Buckmaster's plans. At 1/9th scale the plane will have a wingspan of 48 inches or 1219.2 mm for those in other parts of the globe. My expectation is for a eflite park 300 to 340 on 2 cell lipo.
At this early stage I would like to go 5 channel (with flaps). More on this as it progresses. Maybe build thread too if there is interest.

Not really continued...

I have begun a new A-6 indoor model for this winters indoor flying. I have a new indoor hand launch glider, 12" span, 2.6 Grams. Uses flaps and carbon fiber reinforced balsa fuselage. It is a derivative of Lee Surtees' mini-sting Mk2.

I have been working on plans and such for 1/9th scale high wing models.

I need to get back to the Anson again. I have been looking for that famous British light grren primer paint. I guess I'll need to buy a few small bottles and find my airbrush...

Free Flight Contest Time
Took my batch of free flight models out to our fall annual contest for some flying.

1/2A Maverick
3-6 second launches were rather good, still using quick DT so have not gotten a good look at glide yet. Needs a little left rudder and maybe a little more washout in right main panel. After a pilot error (long DT) found that maybe I don't have enough decalage.

GEEF 500
I trimed out to much of the incedence and it came down rather fast. No damage, broken prop darn it all. Need to remove shim and add some left rudder.

Royal Lancer 600
Still not climbing out correctly, while talking to a "pro" discovered that rudder is not straight, so will need to fix that.

East Wind
This one still dutch rolls on climb out. Everyone says that the rudder is too small (forward of stab) and I believe the modern power up front is too strong as well. I feel that the dutch roll is making transition very difficult.
