What is it?? I figured that you guys who read this section are the sharpest, and would help me identify my bird.

I purchased this off eBay a few years back as a half-completed project, finished it up, and have been flying it as a slope plane for a few weeks. But... I have no idea what it is, who created the kit, or what the foil section is. The nose cone had a large landing skeg on the bottom with several teeth that I removed. It trims out very nicely and is fast, with a wide speed range. What is it?

Specs: Wing Span - 78 in. Length - 53 in. AUW - 55 oz. Wing Area - ~575 in2

Here's a few pictures of some beautiful slopes around St. John's NL. Every wind direction covered. Lots of 500 ft shear cliffs to check out. :eek:

Landing zones so far are thick moss covered rock, soft muddy ground, or tall grass. Much better then CO.

Hi Everyone.

I have a friend with kids who has just been bitten by the bug.

He's in the Albion PA kind of area, and is looking for bombproof beginner stuff. I reckon he'll get into more serious flying later on, so he's looking for suggestions for a newbie plane, and a reasonable radio that'll cater for more planes.

Also, given that one day he might end up with some serious square meterage/footage of Carbon, let's steer away from 2.4ghz ;)

I started on EPP Elevon planes... I think that'd be a good start for them too. What do you reckon?

"LHS" and 'web suggestions are equally welcome!

EDIT: The reason I'm asking here is because I have no idea of what's most commonly used or available in the US. Here in Europe I'd be able to make good suggestions... but I have no idea of the most servicable and supported radio gear in the US for example.. :)

Discussion Sloping areas in PA, DE, MD, NJ areas?

I live in MD right near PA, DE and NJ. I have only found one sloping hill which is located at the University of DE on a reservoir hill in a park. Its very decent but you have to wait for the very rare South wind. Anyone know of any other places around these areas?

I really like the idea of flying almost endlessly on free power, no motor and acrobatics... I'm in Dunkirk NY and no giant hills or mountains :( but I do live like 2 miles away from lake erie and I have these small cliffs that are roughly 15ft tall but the edges are bordered by trees.

If I were to have say 20mph of wind, what kind of performance could I expect? I'm working no building a tubular FFF bash around aileron and elevator 2ch sloper. I really like the acrobatic videos but I'd be lucky enough if I could float around let alone do acrobatics. I do have one picture of one place I do slope, I have sloped my lost Radian here before, worked alright.

But yeah, Tubular body, probably rubber banded on square wings straight no dihedral wing, big rudder and elevator on tail. Maybe put a 4cell nicd in there to get it goin.

Discussion Pitcheron roll problem

After getting a fair amount of stick time with the Zmax pitcheron, I have to admit that it doesn't roll very well. The problem is worst when flying fast and trying to roll fast. The tail really starts wagging around. At slower speeds and less throw, you get mostly axial rolls, but it still sometimes has the same problem.

I even asked Reed to try it 'cause I wanted to be sure it wasn't just pilot error. If you have seen any of Reed's Jart videos you know he is a master of the fast roll. Even he couldn't get it to roll well consistently.

I tried dialing in various amounts of differential, but that doesn't seem to help. At 15%, it was much much worse.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Specs:

Span - 72"
Root chord - 7"
Tip chord - 4"
Sweep - 3/4" (gives 0" sweep on the quarter-chord)
Wing rod location - 2" from LE
CG - 2 1/8" from LE
MAC - 5.64"

Gallery Blast from the past classics

Was out today with my everyday hack a sailplanes international Mini Racer. FG fuz and foam wings. This one was built 20 years ago 1988/89 and apart from the fuz being filled and repainted a few times it is as orig. Mind you cog is so far back now there is no nose weight and a 5g weight in the tail, elevator movement(all flying) is down to 5mm each way and i had a ball today. Other pictures show where i was, nice local slope 200 feet of coastal cliff(250 when the tide is out, we have monster tides here.) wind was 20mph+ and square on the slope hours of fun(on my own as usual).
Thought i would start this after reading the Gryphon thread.

Discussion Salty died yesterday! What is going on with JR!

I went against my own rule of flying a plane for sale. I lost Salty yesterday to my 3rd JR x9303 radio problem in 2 weeks. I lost my 2 year old T-28 Trojan with hundreds of flihgts on it and then my Big Ceres last Fridayand now Salty the Radian yesterday! The transmitter battery was at 11.0 volts when Salty spiraled in! These planes had all deferent RX's different fyling sites with one common part "THE TRANSMITER" Does anybody know what is going on! All three planes were tried and true and all three just turned and spiraled into the ground. Thank God nobody got hurt!

Cool Unobtainable obtained and allmost rtf

Quite some time ago i had a great score of finding an SR-7 with glass fuz and canopy plus plans.Well here she is getting close to being finished.The wing is a trusted RG-14.The tail is bagged balsa.I wanted to try some AUTO AIR water based paints pics dont do the gloss justice

What do you guys think i should be able to see it in the air

I think this is the only SR-7 in OZ

Help! AMA Show Donation Request

It's that time of year again, the time of year I beg all the vendors out there to donate a little something something to the ISR for our AMA show raffle. This year we are not running the PSS Fest (it's our off year) so we will not hit you up again later for more freebies.

As usual the club will be spending 3 days working hard dispensing slope soaring wisdom, telling people where to fly, where to buy and hopefully selling them a raffle ticket or two.

Any vendor that donates to the club can send some catalogs or brochures along and we will gladly pass those out for you (FREE ADVERTISING!).

Hi all, as per usual me and the family will be making the yearly Disney pilgrimage in spring break 2010 March/April. I know its pretty flat but isnt there a waste site or something that is slopeable, I'm thinking about an Alula or something. Will be staying in Lake Buena Vista area anyone point me in the direction of some slope action....... without driving 2hrs+.......

Good Morning dear all,

My name is Filipe Ribeiro, I�m from Portugal ( Europe ) and I�m wondering buying a Mukltiplex Blizzard to flown as a pure glider .

This, will allow me to reduce a considerable amount of weigh in the aircraft ( Brushless motor; Speed controller, LIPO battery packs..)

Anyone around as tried the blizzard as a pure glider in the slope?

What is the behaviour of the model in a slope without all the weight necessary to fly it as electric ? I believe fast but with poor retention of energy / speed ... True?

I�m a novice to the sport that is used to fly in a slope with MPX easy glider / Foamy wing and a beautifull Swing from Kyosho. Do you believe this is a "too much instable glider for me !?

By the way, let me show you the slope where I do Slope soaring in Portugal.
It is managed by a local rc glider association called APSIA.

Question Where did all the slope pilots go?

Like many of you I started slope flying back in the 80s. Back then slope flying was pretty popular and most sites would have a number of people, even if the wind was down.

Well, I moved away from the good slopes and dropped out of slope flying until earlier this year. After visiting many of the old sites, and attending several of the RC Groups slope events in the last couple of months I have to ask where is everyone?

The organized events draw about as many people as a good slope day used to without an event. And an average slope day at the local big sites is down to 2 or 3 pilots.

I guess it isn't all bad, I get a lot of flying in, and don't worry much about mid airs.

Recently visited So Cal sites: Bluff Cove, Point Ferman, Little Mountain, Dave's Beach, Lanada Bay, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Kite Hill (mostly electric these days), LDS, Laguna Beach, & Lilly Shappel (Lilly did have good attendance and was a strong day.)

Talking with locals at these fields it sounds like slope flying is way off. Ferman and Bluff sound like they average just 3-5 pilots on a typical weekend. That is way down from the 20+ regulars both of those fields used to have.

I thought there would be more fliers, not less. My regular flying buddies I converted from the local electric field, and they have not been flying electric at all since their first slope visit several months back. :)

Is this similar to your experiences? Or am I just at the wrong places at the wrong times?

Help! Torque Rod Design/Install Help

I am stumped - maybe brain overload, who knows :D

I'm trying to design a sloper - sort of taking aspects of other planes and designs I like and merging them together to see if I can make it fly :D

I want to use torque rods for the ailerons/elevator. The ailerons are going to be easy - and I even made them up and installed them last night... But when I went to get something for the elevator together I drew a blank - and I'm still drawing that blank.. :( Sooo, looking for suggestions.

If my elevator was typical, there wouldn't be a problem. But this design I have has a swept wing configuration for the stab. So, the actual hinge line is around 30deg off of square. That means (in my mind's eye anyway) that the torque rods cannot 'swing' together. Past designs I have looked at use one length of wire to drive both halves of the elevator. But with approximatly a 60deg angle on the hinge lines that won't work.

It is probably a simple solution (or at least I am hoping it is) that can get one servo to drive both halves of the elevator using torque rods?? I'm open to any/all suggestions here!! LOL I will try and add a photo of the actual stab tonight. I just don't have it here w/me at work ...

Discussion Flying wing elevon chord?

Hey Guys

I'm messing with a homebrew plank running a PW98 section, PW recommends a flap chord of 20-30%.

Does this need to be a constant % running from root to tip or can you go say 20% at the root to 25% at the tip?

I ask because when I mark up the elevons at say 20% it doesnt look like enough at the tips of the wing and if I go say 25-30% it looks like theres too much at/around the root.

My thought are that it should be a constant % of the shord form root to tip but it just looks funny :)
