I am currently in the process of building my first sailplane and want to know some more info.
to start this off I'm a complete newbie to sailplanes and this is just a small balsa build to get my feet wet. As you can see from the picture, it is a small polyhedrial and it will mainly be hand towed. However I would like to learn to DL for those days when I fly alone or by brother doesn't feel like running ;) So how, in simple step by step manner, does a person perform a DL? I have seen vids of launches and would like to know how to do them. I have no desire to start with the perfect DL but just the basics so I can start soaring.

If this desing has no chance of success please let me know before I ruin it :D and just so you realise how small this is the wingspan is only 36"

RC soaring is challenging regardless of which class size airframe, but hand launch flying is by far the most demanding. It takes stamina, physical technique and other skills not normally used in winch launch or hi-start launch soaring.

Bruce has been a Nats winner multiple times, and his knowledge and skill are the basis of this DVD. Bruce is very knowledgeable and gets his point across in a way so that even a novice modeler can benefit from it. While this DVD is about hand launch class planes, the majority of the information crosses over into other size airplanes as well.

!Contents

This third title in the Master Class series, Hand Launch Master Class with Bruce Davidson, is nicely packaged with a full color label and standard DVD case. Like the previous two, I was entertained and learned several new techniques while reaffirming many old ones too.

*Viewing Requirements:
•The DVD is an "All Region" DVD and should play on most current computers and DVD players.

Bruce uses the Momentum Model Technologies Sirius sailplane.

!!Preparation
!!!Break It!
@2880284:Making sure the airplane is air-worthy is a high priority with any sailplane, but it's especially true with a hand launch glider. I was a little worried about the title of this chapter but what Bruce puts forth is actually good advice: Try to make glued surfaces come off with a little more force than any flight load it will ever see. Bruce goes through every item on a DLG that needs to be checked. He also deals with dual neutrals which is mentioned in several of Radio Carbon Art’s DVDs and must be dealt with before flying or the plane will be very difficult to trim and never fly to its potential.

!!Set the CG
While not a chapter of its own, it is arguably the most important setup item with an airplane. This is the static portion of setting the CG; the dynamic CG is checked during the flying portion. Bruce gives some good advice about how to get the proper CG and make sure it doesn’t shift during flight.

@2880269:Setting the Decalage is critical to transform a good flying plane into a great flying plane.
!!Decalage
In a nutshell, Decalage is the difference between the neutral angle of the wing and stab. Typically, high performance planes use what is called “zero-zero” meaning, the wing is at zero, and the stab is set at zero. While not all planes are set up this way, unless the manufacturer recommends something different, this is a good place to start.

@2880271
!!Throwing Blade Tips
Bruce covers the history of throwing blades in DLG and what is the hot ticket today. Bruce also adds some color to the peg so it’s easy to see during the last chapter’s discussion. Mounting position, strength and several other areas of the throwing blade are covered in this chapter.

!!Radio Setup
Each person has his own flying style and radio setup, but the majority of us use the same basic mixes. Depending on your radio and aircraft choice, the amount of throws and mixes should be the same from aircraft to aircraft. Bruce recommends setting up each DLG in exactly the same way so he is comfortable with each plane. He uses a minimum of mixes and keeps the mixes on a minimum number of switches. This is excellent advice: The more workload required of the pilot to fly the transmitter, the more it takes away from his ability to concentrate on the plane in flight.
@2880287:It's likely that you'll need more than one DLG for the season. Setting them up with the same actuator settings makes it less likely to have problems if you end up using the wrong program to fly the airplane

!!Aileron/Rudder Mix
Again, Bruce recommends keeping things simple. He likes aileron/rudder and rudder/aileron mix and he has it on all the time. There is no switch to turn it on or off. Don’t be confused with the two. Aileron/rudder mix means that the rudder is mixed to the aileron stick, and rudder/aileron means the rudder stick is mixed to the ailerons. This will become noticeably important when you see the “Rudderless Method” Chapter.

!!Snap Flap
Snap flap is used to create extra lift when applying elevator. As you pull the elevator stick back, the wing cambers itself to gain extra lift. Bruce explains in more detail why and when it’s used

!!Elevator
Due to the low airspeed at the apex of launch, DLGs typically need a lot of “down” elevator to bring the tail up to the wings’ level during this phase of launch. Bruce uses a spring-loaded stab so the servo only pulls one direction.
@2880285
!!Continuity
DLG is sort of the blood sport of soaring, and it’s not unusual for the contest modeler to have 3 or more aircraft heading into the soaring season. If each of the planes are set up the same as far as direction of travel goes, even if you have the wrong program installed and you launch, only the smaller trim issues will be the difference, possibly saving an airplane.

!!Center of Gravity, Dive Test
While many people still argue about the validity of the dive test, it does give you an indication of where your CG is. If you put your plane into a 45 degree dive, neutralize the stick, and the plane quickly raises the nose, the plane has too much nose weight in it. Why does this happen? As the speed increases, the static force of the nose weight is overcome by the dynamic force of the tail. If you have to carry some up elevator to fly normally or the plane is set up with say a minus 3 degrees in the tail, it’s a sign that you are using too much nose weight.

Does this mean that it’s “wrong?” It’s probably just not the most efficient. On the other end of the scale, if you put the plane in the dive and it tucks, then you need to add some nose weight. For most people, if the plane slowly rises from the dive and in all other areas of normal flight it flies well, then the CG is good. This is a personal preference issue; some people will like planes that are slightly more nose heavy than others. It’s definitely a “feel” issue but if you are way off of either end, you are giving up performance.

!!Launch Mechanics
This chapter starts with a Bruce demonstrating a golf swing. What does that have to do with launching radio control sailplanes? Everything! You are trying to achieve is a consistent technique. Smoothness, repeatability and follow through are all covered in this chapter
@2880278:Smoothness and repeatability are some of the keys to getting a good launch.

!!Common Mistakes
The elbow and follow through are the first of several common mistakes Bruce discusses in this chapter.
@2880286:There are correct and incorrect ways to launch a DLG. The DVD devotes a lot of time to showing both.
!!Just Throw It
This chapter is really the meat of the DVD. Paul and Bruce spend several minutes and multiple shots and angles demonstrating the proper launch technique. Probably the most revealing views were shot from above where you can see Bruce in action. The lower level shots are great for seeing the angle of the plane during launch. The overhead shots show the body mechanics and as Bruce describes it, winding and unwinding the spring.

!!The Glove
Launch comfort is the reason for the glove. Bruce covers the evolution of which gloves have been used and which ones are currently the best.
@2880280:Wearing a glove increases comfort during the launch phase and allows the modeler to launch higher, longer.

!!After Release
Safety is the key to launching. Always launch into the wind or you may end up face to face with another modeler or launching through another model. Bruce discusses the science/art of getting the optimum launch
@2880283:Getting the right pushover speed is essential to getting high launches.
!!Lift on Launch
There are visual differences when flying in lift or sink. Recognizing this on launch can help the modeler get better launches by staying away from or leaving sink early, or staying with the trajectory of the launch because the plane is climbing much more noticeably than normal.

!Wind Effects
Utilizing the mini-DLG, Bruce discusses launch presets, over rotating and other effects the wind will cause the plane demonstrate. It’s up to the pilot to recognize what the plane is doing, how the wind is affecting it and make corrections as necessary.

!!!Launch Clinic
The Perfect Launch, pushing over too late and many other launch issues are demonstrated by Bruce. Again, decalage is discussed as it pertains to launch issues.
@2880279:Turn and Burn is something you'll use at every outing. Practice it each time you go fly for fun.
!!Turn and Burn
If your thermal is behind you, you don’t launch downwind, but instead do what’s called a “turn and burn.” Bruce also demonstrates a second method of getting downwind which is basically an Immelman turn.

!!Finding Lift
Using the Sirius and the streamer mounted to his antenna, Bruce launches a multitude of flights in light lift. Bruce makes one of the best recommendations a modeler can make: In light air, it’s best not to move the sticks much. Each surface deflection causes drag, taking away time from the flight. This is a meat and potatoes chapter that not only DLG pilots will appreciate.

!!Rudder Mix
Another tidbit of wisdom Bruce discusses is that we should make changes past the point where they are good. If you change the CG, for example, by taking out some weight, and you think it’s good but don’t take out any more, you may not be at the most efficient spot. It’s best to go beyond what is good and then come back to what is best. This advice alone is worth the price of the video.

!!The Rudderless Method
Many new competition DLGs are coming out with fixed rudders. For the competition pilot, Bruce gives his opinion on why he thinks they are a good idea and how to deal with coordinated turns without using a rudder. I don’t think this will fly for larger planes, but for DLG this may be the hot ticket.
@2880281:Many new models have fixed rudders. Bruce discusses the whys and hows of this new trend.
!!Airtime
Bruce spends time launching and flying so you can see his launch technique, and he discusses his thermal search pattern. This could have been a boring chapter with someone just launching and landing, but Bruce is always giving gems of advice to help us become better modelers.

!!Energy Management
The ability to get the plane back to your hand while maximizing flight time is proper energy management. Bruce describes the best ways to maximize energy management regardless of the wind conditions.
@2880282:Since sailplanes have no motor, managing energy is the key to maximizing flight time.
!!Wing Loading: Good
There are proper times to ballast an airplane, and during practice is the time to find out what amount of weight works best for the conditions. Even though we don’t have a combustion engine in the nose to help us to move around the sky, ballast can allow us to move around the sky faster than a lighter plane. We can use this extra speed to get to thermals that are farther away and ride thermals farther downwind and know we have the ability to get back

!!Dead air time
At the end of the day, thermals are weak to nonexistent, yet contest directors still make us fly. What can you do to optimize dead air time? Nailing the launch, flying at the proper speed, not moving the sticks unless needed and simply maximizing the time are the answers. Bruce makes this look easy while working toward a 2 minute max in dead air.

!!Practice: The out and in
When the air is dead, working what is known as the “out and in” is good practice. Contests demand quick turnarounds. This means launching, meeting a task and getting the plane back in the air as quickly as possible for the next task. I watched Bruce do an out and in in 3 seconds or less. This is what it takes to win DLG contests, and Bruce and Radio Carbon Art show you how it’s done.

!Conclusion
It’s not only entertaining, there is a plethora of information on aircraft setup, air reading skills, launch techniques and much more in the Hand Launch Masters Class 1 DVD. Though directed at the Hand Launch crowd, most of the information applies to all sizes of sailplanes. Bruce Davidson is a very knowledgeable and appropriate personality for this subject and gets his points across by the use of both verbal and demonstrative examples. Overall, this DVD is a winner and should be considered required viewing if you want to increase you knowledge about Hand Launch gliders and increase your contest placing.
The History of Arboga
Arboga and the surrounding area boast a number of important historical sites from events which have influenced the entire country at various times during the last 1000 years. Settlements in Arboga date from as far back as the Stone Age and there are several historical sites revealing remains from various periods in Arboga’s history in the surrounding area. Götlunda (10km from Arboga) has remaines from the 11th Century which features a rune stone called Kung Sigges sten (King Sigge’s stone). Between Arboga and Götlunda is the ancient castle Halvardsborg, which is one of three in the parish of Götlunda. Arboga’s town centre was already developing into a busy community in the 11th Century, with the first of five churches, St Nikolai’s, being completed 100 years later. An exciting period in Arboga’s history was when the Franciscan monks settled here during the 13th Century; Gråbröderna (the grey brotherhood), as there were called, were known for participating in communities which they thought had the potential to expand and develop. This was true of Arboga and the town owes a lot to the work of the monks, e.g. the monastery they built which later became the church of the Holy Trinity in Arboga. The monks also tended to the poor and the sick as well as teaching reading skills to children. There are many stories of an old network of underground passages in which the monks could move around the town in secret. The monks stayed in Arboga until the 16th Century, when King Gustav Vasa broke with the Roman Catholic Church, took over all the monasteries and drove the monks out of Sweden.
Arboga was an influential town during the middle ages; the Arboga River gave the town a trade route to Stockholm and the rest of the world. The iron ore trade was also an important commodity during Arboga’s history, where it was weighed and stored at Ladbron. Unfortunately the trade route was iscontinued after construction was completed on the Hjälmarkanal (Hjälmar Canal), but then the new canal did have some positive effects on Arboga. Arboga was also host to a number of important historical events including Engelbrekt’s first assembly of the Swedish parliament in 1435. The town was also a residence for monarchs – during the 16th Century Gustav Vasa and his daughter, Cecilia, lived here. Cecilia later became Countess Cecilia of Arboga and lived in the church building Helge And, which later became the town hall and remains so today. Arboga, with its well preserved medieval character, is a beautiful and charming town. The ancient cobble stones of Västerlånggatan(the riverside street, lined with period wooden houses) have been trodden by the feet of many locals and travellers throughout the ages. Close by is the old village chamber, famous for its special stories. It was here that Lasse-Maja, a master thief known throughout Sweden, was almost captured -affording Arboga another interesting episode in its long history. Further information on Arboga’s interesting history, people and places can be obtained by booking dramatized guided tours and organized walks, as well as visiting Arboga Tourist Information.

As you guys know we will have the first world championship for F3K in July of 2011. This event will take place in Arboga, Sweden. As with all of the FAI world championships our AMA offers support for the USA team. There are many facets to this support and it is all defined in the World Championships Team Blue Book found on the AMA site here. http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/U...okRewrite1.pdf

The support for our USA team does not happen automatically though. The first step is to submit a petition to Greg Hahn, the Technical Director at the AMA. That petition needs to include 20 signatures from pilots who intend to participate in the team selection process. I have been in contact with Greg and I will pursue the task of establishment of a new team program.

What I need to start is at least 20 electronic signatures from pilots that intend to participate in the team selection event. Please send me an e-mail titled F3K petition to got2soar@me(dot)com. The body of the message should include your name as it appears on your AMA card, your AMA number and your address.

More information on the team selection process can be found here. http://www.f3k.us/index.html

Thanks in advance for your help with this process.
I´m an happy owner of the HLG Swing from Kyosho.
I only use it for slope soaring in light wind days.. This plane flies in a slope almost without any wind.. And caths thermals in a fantastic mode.. It only weights 298 Grams with all the electronics there.. Í have read the post about Fling ( from great planes) and I do believe the plane is completly identical..

My problem is I lose the instructions manual of the plane and need to readjust the CG ( Center of Gravaty).
Anyone could help me with the proper CG point in the plane ( according with the instructions manual )?

Additionally I have damaged the plastic canopy suplied with the plane. Any sugetions about what I can use to replace this canopy?
Since I can´t find any new canopy in a model shop in Portugal I would rather go to a "home made " solution .. Sugetions are well appreciated !

Thank you very much for the help and best regards,

I just finished my second Apogee from wings and a pod made by Dave Kraemer. Both the bagged wings and the pod were of excellent quality.

I finished the first one (blue tail) last week and had a chance to fly it on Wednesday. What a hoot for such a small package. For micro DLG I've been flying both a Gambler and a Bug, but I believe this one may be more fun. It doesn't quite float like the Gambler, but it launches better and certainly moves around a LOT better.

Dave's wing panels come with live hinges, flaperons cut out and some excellent glass and carbon work. I can't fault the workmanship in any way, and those who know me will realize how much of a compliment that is. The first set of panels weighed 50 grams, while the second set, with a bit more reinforcing around the servo openings (probably not needed) weighed 53 grams.

The pod is molded entirely from Kevlar and with nose cone weighed 11 grams! It also exhibits first class workmanship.

Dave's personal Apogee that I saw fly on the slope this Fall was a one-piece airframe and flew very well in the light lift. As the wind picked up it continued to move around very nicely and was easily flown through any turbulence.

For packing reasons I built my two Apogees with both the wing and stabilizer removeable. Despite that my Apogees weighed 132 grams (4.65 oz) and 135 grams (4.76 oz) ready to fly. I suspect that Dave's Apogee, being a one-piece airframe, is a bit lighter than mine.

And fly they do. The launches from sidearm are easy and without any drama, unless you call the height they will get to as dramatic.

If you're looking for a quick Winter project you could do a lot worse than contacting Dave Kraemer at davekra@gmail.com and ordering a set of wing panels and a fuselage pod.

15 or so years ago I had a HLG, one of the two or three more popular ones at the time. I can't remember the name of it and need a replacement fuse. It was a foam wing covered with obechi, poly wing with a 1/4" strip of carbon fiber along the bottom of the trailing edge. Center and poly joints have .5 or 1 oz cloth for reinforcement. Fuse had a finger hole in the bottom for launches and stab and rudder pushrods were pre-installed. Fuse came unpainted and all up weight with radio was 16 oz. Any suggestions on the name would be appreciated. (if I hear the name I'll remember it)
Night 1 (Tuesday): I glue the wing together. A couple of more mistakes done:

I cut the servo bays further away from center (copying Paul's DVD), area without the reinforced glass;

When file the channel for servo leads I almost poke the glass skin out;

Didn't check the symmetry of wing halves before epoxy them: there is 3mm difference of flap size.

guys,

In looking over the threads for new tasks I proposed that it might be enough to just offer certain tasks at different times to make a contest more challenging and have greater score separation.

In thinking about preparing for next year I came up with a few questions:

1. Is there a preferred time of day to offer certain tasks?

2. To me, I find the Last 2, 3x3, 1,2,3,4 and AULD to typically be like late morning or later type tasks. Do you feel that they could be offered as round 1 or 2 type tasks? Would this turn them into 'who got lucky' and not trully show skill or what?

3. How would moving a 5 x 2min to mid contest affect things? Would it tend to be a gimmie and only separate contestants by very small amounts of time?

4. If you were trying to make a contest more challenging but not only require luck to wim, how would you select tasks based on time of day?

Before someone comments, no I do not think the current set are easy. I am only trying to point out that with a little creativity the curent set might be able to suffice longer than expected and produce good score separation.

Thanks

Frank

The Q : How do we set our radio for the first lunch .... should it be set on dual rate i.e 1st rate : with elevator on + for launching ; 2nd rate : Elevator neutral for flying and gliding ...

Or all controls should be neutral and I just need to just side launch it and it will go up vertical naturally?

Any feedbacks are welcome with thanks.

Cheers.

Question Hitec Aurora 9 2.4 GHz for DLGs?

What do you know about the Hitec Aurora 9 2.4 GHz radio and receivers? Comparing this radio to Jr x9303 and Futaba 10CGA it seems to at least hold its own, if not outshine these others?

Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Noel

Since 2.4 radios started showing up things have changed in the way we fly. With the short antenna it is harder to fly with out the ribbon at the top. So we came up with a solution. With the hard mount the rod is removable for transport. Standing 18" tall it gives just enough height for the ribbon. This makes for a great addition for the DLG pilots.
