So can anyone tell me how to apply dope for my next project (a Guillows F6F Hellcat) how i can apply dope and any weight reducing techniques.
I think, because i'm not the most experienced builder, i didn't build the Aeronica very well at all so it didn't fly.

And one last thing-could anyone give me tips on getting all the pieces to fit because i found last time that alot of the pieces didn't fit together at all.

Hi, I used to fly free flight rubber models while growing up and have been into RC planes for the past 20 years. I still build a few rubber models and visit this forum but am stumped as to how rubber powered free flight planes are categorized. I've tried the seach function without luck.

Can someone define these for me? (or point me to a website)

Peanut scale - (from the Peck-Polymers website I take it the max wingspan is 13")

Walnut scale - larger than peanut, but how much?

Pistachio scale - smaller than peanut?

Dime scale - ?

Embryo -

Jumbo scale -

Golden Age scale -

No Cal scale -

I'm sure there are more but these are what I can think of now.

My Comet P-40 is almost done. I was at a class this week up north for work so I brought another kit with me. I was given a laser cut Guillows Fokker for my B-day. I am sure all of us remember trying to build one of these as a kid and ended up with a non flying brick. Well I can say this kit is far superior to the kit I had 30 years ago. The wood is still on the heavy side for a triplane, but still a lot better than the die crunched stuff. I took my rocky top jig with me and started building. I was inspired by Supercruisers Fokker restoration, so I wanted a little nostalgia. I will once again use Testors cement, since that was the glue I used before Elmers as a kid. I will also use the red tissue in the kit and all the parts. The only mods might be to beef up the landing gear and move the motor peg forward. I was able to build the fuselage in just one night. The parts fit perfect and by far the best Guillows kit I have built so far.

Hi :)

Got my hands on some balsa(finally), and here goes my first balsa build. Decided to make it a Mustang since its my favourite :D Its an Earl Stahl P-51D Allan Hunt design, 20inch wing span. Started off with the tail, and cutting the wing parts. The tail is made from 1mm balsa (dough the plan said 1.5mm) but I only have 1mm and 3mm sheets. The tail ribs are from basswood to compromise for the loss of strength from using slim wood (not exactly sure if it will add the needed strength, but I'm giving it a try :D ) I'll keep you in track as I go along
If I want an even 8", do I angle up more on the tips, or cut off 1/4 of each center section of the wing, or shorten the tips.

Such a simple little plane. So many questions.

I am assuming that wingspan is measured from tip to tip?

Finally I have the time for a build! I've had the plans for the garter Knight some time - from X-List. I built the vertical stab today, after laminating the outline last night. It still needs some final sanding. Prop blade also needs some finishing sanding.
Will domestic tissue from the grocery store be OK to cover with? I think it's jap tissue(ish) -it has a shiny side, which I believe should should face inward when covering.
Plan is full of errors, which I don't think is from the copy machine. the base rib for the stab on plan for example is 1/8" shorter than the side profile. The prop block is also shown much longer than the actual size.

I'm carving my first single bladed folder for a "Garter Knight" ( AM plan D809 to you). I'm quietly confident so far with the carving of the prop, I'm just wondering how thick it should be? at present it's about 4 or 5mm. It's a 15.8" diam & 26" pitch. It's only going to be a sport model for my own pleasure. Does a thicker flat bottom section cause less drag than a thinner undercambered blade. I think Applehoney once stated that a flat bottomed section was fine.
Question is... is 5mm too thick for the 8 inch blade. I've never seen one in the flesh & all the plastic props I've seen are quite thin all the way through the section.
will post a pic just now, also wondering if it has enough twist?
I've followed the plan faithfully.
Just tried to take a pic... but it's almost impossible to capture accurately- because the viewer doesnt know where angle of the root of the blade is in relation to the angle at the tip. I have a pitch gauge shown on the plan.

cheers
The question:
On a rubber model: Does a frewheeling prop generate more drag or less, than a non rotating one...?

Undisputable, an autogyro falls faster should the rotor stop rotating, but still most rubber models have a freewheeling prop setup.......so, could anyone please bring some light into this...?

I know, a rubber prop has much higher pitch than an autogyro rotor....but that doesn't give the whole answer....
