Help! Data Problems

Hi. Could use some help.

I'm using the eLogger V3 for a school project. We're using it to log current, voltage, and power coming from a solar cell over the course of a day. We did a bit of testing already but are not sure what to make of the data. The cell is rated at 12 volts, 5 watts.

When the elogger was hooked up to the cell, the powerpanel showed up to 20 volts with no current, except it would sporadically jump to .2 or .3 amps. When a load was placed on it, (a 10 Ohm resistor), voltage and current went to zero. I realize that 10 Ohms was probably too much resistance for the system but it's ll we had at the time. So the next thing we will do is use a smaller load.

The main problem we had was the second time we ran a test. We disconnected the load that time to see what would happen. The test ran 108 minutes. Values for volts, amps, and watts were zero until about an hour after starting. At that time, for no obvious reason, it started to read around 12 volts. And then about 30 minutes later amps and watts started to gain value. They varied some until the end of the test. I'm going to attach a screenshot so you can see a graph of the data.

Why would the recorder start getting data after an hour of recording nothing?

How are we getting current readings when there is no load? Or is it just measuring the current the recorder is using itself?

Any suggestions for a better way to place a load on the circuit if needed?

Not the typical application for the elogger. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion Ver 8.05 needs run as administrator -help!

Hi folks,

I need help. I tried to update to 8.05 but got an error at the install wizard to run as administrator. How do I do that? Thought I did it correct by right clicking on the data logger program icon but maybe that is the wrong spot?

Please guide me to get it installed. I had to find the cd and reload the old version as the program icon disappeared and the program disappeared out of the programs list.

Discussion Safety Wizard hangs

Whenever I try to start the Safety Wizard, my OSD Pro hangs. Occasionally it will go back to main/heads up display, but it will not enter the Safety wizard. Is there something I have to have setup first? I have throttle and ailerons hooked up to both OSD and e3 Datalogger.

Discussion Could laser vibrometers be made feasible for RC?

An idea came to me this morning. I have built and am flying a Bergen gas heli. I live in an isolated location, and I've never had a chance to show it to anybody who knows what they're looking at.

Obviously, vibration is a constant concern for heli (esp. gasser) operators, especially when we're using advanced electronics - which most of us do. In the forums and literature, you learn (a) that EVERY source of vibration in your machine must be tracked down and ruthlessly eliminated, and (b) that this is only possible up to a certain point - ultimately, some vibration is inevitable. This contradiction can result in painful cognitive dissonance. I've done my best, obviously, but how do I know if my best is good enough?

Guessing that "vibrometer" was probably a word and that such devices exist, I typed it into Wikipedia, which gave me an article on LDV's or "Laser Doppler Vibrometers". A number of companies listed in the article do, in fact, produce such devices for industrial purposes. A common application is the measurement of vibration in motor vehicles.

The laser doppler-type devices have the advantage of being non-contact, much like the temperature sensors available for the hobby. As such, they don't weight the hardware, so there's no influence on the vibration being measured.

I looked at a couple of available products, which are too big, heavy and expensive for our purposes. If, however, they could be produced at a suitable price point, size, weight and quality, I think you'd have a nifty product. They would be natural add-ons to Eagle Tree or similar systems, where the data could be measured and recorded throughout flights.

Hello,
I updated the Data Recorder Software to 8.04. Then i opened the Software on PC. I connected the dashboard with the PC. After checking the Firmware, it was updating the Dashboard to 4.76. But it is still not possible to connect it with the PC and adjust the setting. I tried it moretimes. But the dashboard was not longer working after updating. Only after downgrading to Version 4.74it was working again.
Has anybody an idea to solve this problem

Discussion FDR pro and XBee Pro interface

Is it possible to get a serial output from the FDR pro unit to interface to the XBee Pro modules.
These modules work on 2.4GHz and give a transparent serial link over a 2.4GHz RF Link.
I know there is a serial output available from the FDR that connects to the Seagull TX, but to configure this you seem to need a Seagull RX unit as well.
Is there any way to configure this without a Seagull unit, (maybe a firmware upgrade)

Discussion V3 Power Problem

I have both a V3 and a Flight Data Recorder

When I connect the FDR to a USB port my computers (I have a Mac and a PC running XP) both computers seem to have no problem seeing the FDR.

When I connect the V3 to either of the computers, neither one will see it unless it is connected to a flight pack. Have I missed something in the instructions or is there a problem here? (I have a further problem with the Mac which is running XP under Fusion inasmuch as it can see either of my logging devices, but it has to be manually configured -- modify what I want to record on the hardware -- before I can use it. It does not give me a choice of Models).

Discussion Pitot hook up

have a Eagletree Gilder Vario system that I bought about a 18 months ago but have only gone to install it now. I purchased one of the newer Pitot tubes as the original only came with a length of tube.

In the latest set of instructions it shows three air ports on the logger with two being on the side of the case and one on top. My logger only has two on top (One was covered with a label)

How should I connect this up?

Also if I need a longer length of tube what should I use and how long can it be?

Dear Bill,
in the manual is written that we should contact Eagle tree by Mail to get the information how to use the optical sensor as secondary sensor.
I think it is for more users a usefull information if you could post it here how to do that.

Correct me please if I am wrong or I missed something before I destroy my Sensor or my Logger:
Basically it is just an additional resistance before the IR-LED supply of the sensor. The NPN output side must be still supplied with the full voltage.

I use the CAR Data recoder and I can connect the secondary Sensor at the next unused Servo connector, or?

Discussion Software insists on logging Airspeed

I have 8.03 software.

I have two models created. When I select "Choose Parameters to Log in the Recorder," the "Airspeed" checkbox is checked. If I clear that checkbox and click OK:
1- I don't get prompted that logged data in the recorder will be cleared
2- When I reopen the dialog, the Airspeed is checked again.

If I clear Airspeed and change another checkbox, I *am* prompted that logged data will be cleared. But when I open the dialog, while the other checkbox retains its state, the Airspeed checkbox has magically reappeared.

Btw, I have no airspeed measurement sensor.

PS: Brand new at this. Haven't even put connectors on the leads yet. I have the 150 A version Eagletree v3, updated to latest firmware tonight.

I have an Airspeed sensor on my plane, with the pitot tube out the nose. I am buying an altitude sensor... Does this have to connect somehow to the pitot tube? If so, how? Both output tubes from the pitot go into the airspeed sensor...

Has anyone used the Brushless Motor RPM sensor to measure RPM on a Gas motor? I am looking for wiring suggestions to pick up off the Spark Plug wire like the on board tachometers that are available. If I just wind a coil of wire around the spark plug lead and hook both ends of the wire to the leads from the Brushless RPM sensor will it pick up the pulse from the spark plug wire through induction? I want to measure RPM on a Zenoaha G260 PUM motor in a boat. The boat has a cover over the engine so the optical sensor will not work as it is dark inside and I figured the spark plug fires every cycle so that would be the best way to get RPM. Has anyone done this.

Not sure what the proper procedure for beta bug reports is, but I'm starting this thread to report what I've seen. Maybe other members could append to this thread as well if they have issues?

1. German language menus not working; choosing manually makes no difference. [Vista x64]

2. Onscreen setup: "Airspeed Indicator Gauge" shows up as "Propeller RPM (Headspeed)" when dragged into panel area. Gauge is also incorrectly labelled as such. [Vista x64]

I am using the datalogger V3 with the hall effect sensor to measure voltage, current and rpm on an electric motor driven flywheel (inertia dynomometer). When I start the motor (at full throttle) the rpm sensor fails to read properly during the first 0.5 seconds, as can be seen in the data below:

I have tried both the optical and the hall effect rpm sensors, I am using software version 8.03 (and have tried several others), and there are no restrictions on minimum speed/current or other triggers being used in the recorder setup. No matter how many tests I run, it is exactly the same - identical readings for the first 5 timesteps after the current spikes. Initially, the flywheel is accelerating at approximately 1600 rpm per time step, so I believe the first reading is correct. Why does the device momentarily stop sampling? Am I missing something here? Any ideas?

Hi again,
My eLogger V3 can logg servo current, but not servo battery voltage.

Todays 2,4Ghz receiver system is not so robust agains low voltage dip as 27/35/40/72Hz systems. This together with our new digital (powerhungry) servos gives us a increased risk of RX blackout.

Logging servo battery voltage together with current would greatly improve the possible to prevent losses.

Are there any plans to include also voltage logging for the TX battery?

Today 5A is the max (cont.) current - that is not enought. With todays digital servos 10-15A would be more "in line".

Any comments to that?

Hi, i have just bought a eLogger V3 that i plan to use on my next 1,8m scale helicopter with e-engine. I wanted the eLogger to have full control of temeperatures, current and load - mainly to be able to set everything up in a best possible way, and by that gain security for a expensive aircraft (not to talk about the time invested...)

But now i have got som second thoughts:
- Can the Hall effect sensor in the V3 fail? In thay case i will loose all engine power - and auto rotation is not always possible...
- Can the Servo current logger fail? In that case the receiver or individual servo will stop working....
In general i do not like to introduce new risk factors - the more parts, the more can go wrong. And if you wire anyting in serie, you will increase the final risk.

What do you people think about this?

Discussion Power Panel Timer?

Is there any way to get the power panel to display elapsed time? I don't see an option for it in the set up of values to display.

If not, is this a feature that could be added in the future.

It would be nice to be able to see how much time has elapsed compared to how many pack amps that have been used.

The timer could start and stop based on a set trigger point as the logger can currently do.

Hello, I have a problem with my eLogger V3. The problem occurs when trying to use the eLogger in Live Mode. It will work for 10-35 seconds and then it freezes and then I get this message:

An error occurred when writing to the Recorder. Check the connection, and ensure that the Recorder LED is blinking three flashes in a row. If the problem persists, see the Troubleshooting section in the user manuals. Additional Code 160.

I have an HP laptop running Vista x64.

I also have another problem. Every once in a while after using the recorder on the plane, I'll hook it up to the computer and there will be a large spike in the data. Like max current and voltages for one data point.

Any solutions?

A logic alarm which sounds on the dashboartd when there is a mismatch between throttle stick setting and RPM. Specifically an alarm which indicates a motor failure with zero RPM and full throttle. All my crashes are the result of not being able to hear the electric motor when it is far away. The recovery from a spiral dive is full throttle and up elevator. If the motor or ESC fail, then the recovery is neutral elevator to gain airspeed and then up elevator. I need an alarm to distinguish these two conditions. I just lost an expensive airplane because the retaining clip came off and the bell and prop pulled out resulting in power loss. I was able to figure this out with the Eagletree black box after the crash. If the telemetry system was intelligent enough, it could of warned me that there was a disconnect between stick position and throttle RPM so that I could choose the correct recovery method.

Help! Minimum RPM recorded using the optical sensor (Eagletree V3) ?

I test the recorder (EagletreeV3 datalogger) turning by hand the rotor of my heli.
The data logger records RPM only above 170 rpm, slower gives 0.
Is that OK ?
What is the minimum RPM which may be recorded ?

Discussion Attaching sensors

I am looking for a thread with suggestions about how to attach sensors, like temperature sensor to my speed controller or motor. I am interested in taking a reading and then moving it to other components.

So I was interested in a good connections for the reading but also easy to move to another airplane or component for measuring.

Hi,

i just have a very simple question. I plan to use the elogger V3 in my electric scooter. it will be placed between battery an controller of the scooter. Because of this, the elogger would always be turned on. To avoid this i want to place an on/off-switch between the negative pol of battery and the black connection at the elogger.
my question is: does it damage the elogger if i forget to switch on the minus-connection to the elogger? Anyway the current will flow through the plus-connection if i drive.

Discussion Need Eagle Tree Support

Hello

I tried opening a support ticket last week regarding my OSD Pro. I have not yet received a response. I also never received a confirmation in my email that I opened the ticket. As a result, I have no ticket number I can use to check the status of my ticket, if one was saved.

I have had a V3 for about a year, using it on my 450 Heli with success. I recently purchased the OSD Pro and GPS module. After firmware updates and initial setup via the software, The OSD provided a display in my FPV for the 5 minutes of on-the-ground testing and setup I completed. On the next powerup the OSD did not provide the display.

The V3 will now no longer connect to USB. My WinXP, Win Vista SP1, and Win 07 machines all report "USB Device Not Recognized" when I connect the V3. I never had a problem with this before.

Surfing this forum I discovered that the V1 had a big problem with the USB. And a few V3 owners as well, all seeming to need hardware replacement.

Please advise on what I should do/try next. I've gotten to see my OSD work for all of a few minutes total since I purchased it. I purchased the Eagle Tree OSD because the Black Stork OSD I initially tried could never be made to work. I hope I'm not looking at the same problems here.
