30" Sopwith Camel

Just finished this:

It's a 75cm / 30" wingspan Sopwith Camel built simply based on internet picture and a small drawing. 5 channels with diff aileron and a little aileron-to-rudder mix. AUW 230gr -> 12gr/dm2. Motor is a tiny 2024 outrunner driving a 8x3.8 APC SF prop off a 1200mAh 2S LiPo.

So far only top wing ailerons, but since they are pretty narrow, I plan to link them to lower wing ailerons.

CoG at LE of lower wing. Straight top wing, 6-7* dihedral on lower wing. Top wing incidence 2-3* higher than lower.

I hear the Sopwith Camel should be quite a handfull to fly :eek: Any suggestion before the maiden?

Here's my finished ESA combat Spitfire Mk V. Haven't had chance to take a video yet, but she flies great, is pretty quick and looks just fabulous in the air..:D

f22 dapron build.....my first....any tips.

I am planning on building a f22 dapron kit I found online but changing it from a pusher to a single or twin edf.
This will be my first ever build and first attempt at setting up a single or twin edf, does anyone have some tips or hints .

It's a chap called steve shumate kit, has anyone build one here??

KFm6 pitch axis snaking

Hi,

I have recently scratched build 3 foam wings using the KF-m6 airfoil,

One of them is a fantastic flyer,smooth, nice slow stable flight etc.

On the other two (one plank wing, the other flying wing with sweep) I am getting lots of snaking on the pitch axis. According to one of the online CG calculators at least for one of the platforms I am supposed to be tail heavy, but I am flying at "trim" with elevons deflected up. Is this maybe a thrust issue with my motor setup rather than a CG issue.

Any idea, I am a bit scared of testing changes in the CG as it has been rather nerve racking as it is to maiden these guys and would like to follow a an educated guess rather than go changing blind..

Any advice, is very welcome folks

hi everyone. i have a few questions about a foam plane scratch build i would like to do and maybe some may know the answers to. im interested in trying to build a scratch built foam flyer and this is my question. i have a coax helicopter that is no longer flyable and was thinking i might be able to use the 180 brushed motor for it in my build and if so is there any reason i need to have a gearbox? or can i simply do a direct drive right from the motor?:confused:

28 inch WS twin - Oceanic

my second one. the first one is a trainer (2 ch), and this one will but full setup (4+ ch) right now i got a tail, and the fuse complete. the wings are drying ATM.

power is two 8.5mm brushed geared motors turning gws 5030. static thrust in the 100g area.

im considering flap, or flaperons. cant decide between the two.
any comments on this?

Scratch Build Failure

Hi Pilots,

I need your help please! I tried building my first foamie and it was a complete disaster. Here's the plane I tried to build:

So here's the thing. I built everything to the specs and made sure the CG was right on, but when I went for the hand launch... it would roll over to the upside down position... I have no clue why. Than, I started to think about the actual airfoil. Basically, the only thing I did to get any sort of airfoil on the plane was bevel the leading and trailing edges by 45 degrees. I thought this would be enough of an airfoil to create lift... but obviously there's a step or two that I've missed. Now I'm left with a plane that won't fly. But what really bothers me is the fact that I don't know what is causing the plane not to fly and this is discouraging me from building another plane. Can you guy's please give me your opinion regarding this matter? What do you think caused this problem and how can I rectify it for now my scratch build?

accu: lipol 3s 1300mAh

4x sevos HXT900 9gr

assembly elements for fusselage is easy:

first flight: 15minut before first competition! :)

et voila! Pup is very easy for flying and very stable

first cut!

30'' Trainer build

Hi all just started work On my first RC plane today, got the fuselage complete as well as the rudder and elevator,
Hinged the control surfaces with this plastic sheet, sort of the same stuff the top of a mouse mat is made of, seems to work nice
How long should control surfaces be ? I made them an inch and a half long but it seems quite short

I don't have much time to go to a proper flying area these days, and I'm getting rustier by the second. :mad: I have a few open areas within walking distance, and though there's construction nearby they are wide enough to fly a small foamie (less than 12 oz/ 36" WS).

I'm looking for something to fly there. I don't much care about the form -- can be a high-wing trainer, a flying wing, a pusher jet -- as long as I can build it from the list of parts below, in as short a time as possible. There's a good chance I'll eventually either smash the model against a fence or lose it to an inaccessible area, so I want it to be cheap and fast to put together! :D

Looking through the part bin, I have:
- Couple of Dollarstore foam sheets (20x30", about 1/8" thick), paper removed
- Hot glue, epoxy, or gorilla glue
- "Bell" motors (TowerPro 2408 or 2409)
- Handful of 8x4 props
- Handful of 3S 1000 mAh LiPo
- Handful of 18A ESC
- Handful of 9g servos
- Cheap knock-off receiver
- Assorted wire and hardware

I can print plans as long as they are tiled for 8.5x11" sheets. If the suggestion is cool enough, I'll take it to the print shop, but I'd rather avoid the detour (remember -- quick build!).

What do you suggest?

P.S. I already built three Funder & Lightning. Anything else? :D

"Five Easy Piece" YF-23 v2 'Black Widow"

I just happen to have one of Scott Lott's venerable YF-23 v1's in my hanger.
I love to fly it. It is so simple lightning fast and smooth.
I've always wanted a 3D version but couldn't imagine how Scotts simple and elegant design would be better in 3 Dimensions of foam.
Then I built "Miss February the Lockheed Martin's Sixth Generation fighter from their 2012 calendar and my wheels started to turn.
Maybe I could build a YF-23 v2 with some of the same techniques I learned while fashioning what Jettamandan dubbed the "YF-60 BLACK MAMBA".
Here is my new "Five Easy Piece" YF-23v2 sans it's upper nacelles and airfoils.
made from diagrams found at the YF-23.net site.
A work in progress.
I took it out for a brief glide test off camera.
In a word....AMAZING.

Beginner Scratchbuild

I have conquered land and sea, now I am looking to conquer the air as well. I have flown cheap tyco rc planes and helicopters and am pretty good, but now I am looking to get into higher power planes. I found this Sport Trainer designed by Mikey's RC and was wondering if it would be a good starter plane. It is a fairly large plane, so if you have any suggestions on a smaller Scratchbuild plane that would be great. Here is the plane:

I have also picked out a bunch of HobbyKing parts, except for the motor, servo linkages and horns. The plane calls for a 1000kv-1400kv motor and a 10x6 prop. Can you guys help me pick the motor, horns, and linkages?

How do I convert CAD files to PDF?

I have a few designs that I've done in TurboCad. I can save them as .TCW, .DWG, .DXF or supposedly PDF. The Save as PDF only saves an 8.5 x 11 size.
I went so far as to buy Adobe Acrobat X Pro, but can't figure out how to use it properly.
I would like to be able to save my drawings as PDF in full size, and various tiled sizes.

I would also like to be able to convert PDF to a CAD format to make editing a drawing easier than manually tracing it.
Can someone please give me a few tips?

Any advice regarding “canard” style models are very welcome as this is my first attempt at a canard.

I would have liked to have “no wheels” and take off and land on its belly, but I don’t thisnk this will be possible and will have to have landing gear as I HATE to hand launch models

Super Cool P40 Build

This is my 32" P40. All printed on tissue paper and pasted. Flying weight is 260 grams with a 2S 1000mah Lipo.

Test flew this in the morning and it was cool. Flew from the first take off without any need for trimming. Flight time was about 10 mins.

I am going to try this with 3S soon.

Thinking of building a Fly Guy

I've been thinking of building a Fly Guy using Dow home sheeting insulation. That foam is inexpensive enough, and is very dense to withstand crash mishaps.

All of the flyguys I've seen are built with their arms pointing back. I was thinking of building mine with arms outstretched to the front like most superheros fly.

Anyone have any ideas why this wouldn't work, other than possibly snapping off if I landed nose down...

Ideas/comments/suggestions welcome! :)

dollar tree vs elmers black?!

so i mostly use dollar tree foam, but today, i got some black elmers foam poster board. had a giant struggle with the getting the paper off. then i got a clean piece, and cut out a 4 Sqin bit of dollar tree foam and elmers black.
elmers black, .49 g
dollar tree, .39 g

and to boot, the black is more brittle than the dollar three stuff. (witch might be usefull, one day) what i do notice is the dollar tree does deform, and the black does not.

so now a have two black boards soaked with 1/2a fuel trying to get the paper off, and now my hands feel funny, so why did i not stick to the foam i know and love?

My first big build - 80" B-25

Well I have had so much fun with my Cargo Twin by Foam and Tape that I wanted to go to the next level. So here goes my attempt at a B-25. I have only been building for about three months and in that time have made about 5 different planes. This one will be my first biggun!

I am planning on an 80" wing span B-25 with a bomb bay, flaps, hopefully retracts (budget pending) So far I have the fuselage skins and the middle of the main wing almost done. The fuse will be 5'-4".

I am blown away by many builders here especially Demon Drivers builds who really is my inspiration here but after recognizing my lack of patience I have decided to just build this thing kinda close to scale but no where near the quality I have seen from Demon Driver because I don't have it in me. Plus I want to fatten her up a hair to allow for a bit more cargo! Demon Driver has helped me a lot by answering questions I have posed to him so thank you Sir for that!

I will do my best to post as this thing comes along and will appreciate your help with ideas and build methods as I am still quite new to this.

KFm question

I am building a plane using the KFm wing. I have searched to find the answer to my question but have come up with inconclusive results. Does adding dihedral to a KFm wing adversely affect its performance or will it help stability? I am building a a low wing fighter.

Load testing wings

As a beginner I have already folded two wings and I am starting to think that I should load test them before flying them as at the end I would rather see them fail at home than up in the air!

Do some of you do this? How many g a foamie has to withstand?

Although in real life, the load would be spread, I was thinking of supporting the wings mid span of each half wing and then adding in the middle a load of the weight of the plane times the max g acceration.

how much do I need 3g, 5, 8?

Scratchbuild eurofighter

Here is my Eurofighter I am busy building.I am using polystirene for the body and the wing is made out of isoboard(blucore).I am using normal woodglue(fast setting tipe) to glue all parts together.I find this glue sands down much easier than upor or epoxy.Will use epoxy on firewall for motor.
I use normal cardboard to cut out the profiles for the wing and fuselage parts.They cut out much easier and faster than using wood or other means.If one doesnt push down on the profiles to hard you can use them 2-3 times.
I must still cut out the sections below the wing (Air intake).
I stiil must think of a way to build in the canards.

Wing design and flaws

Hi, relatively new to rc planes but getting there. When i built my first wing i could throw it and it would glide great but under power it was uncontrollable in pitch, so i built a 600mm superfly clone and it flys awesome.
I think with the first one it was cog, i just couldn't get enough weight at the front and adding too much made it too heavy. But with the superfly my weight placement is similar and it seems a tad nose heavy.
Is it just a bad design and thats why i havn't seen anything with such a blunt nose and not much taper?
