I've built a lot of foamy planes and only a few have made my "I'll build this one again list". On that list is the Polaris, Infinion, FuntanaMini and the newest one, the Silent Mite.

Just can't believe this plane has not caught on big time as it does everything well.
Looks good, flies good, crash resistant, uses small motors and batteries, flies in gusty winds, though not nearly as much fun as if the winds are down but it will fly in the gusty stuff. Right now it's my favorite outdoor flyer and being made from EPP it's also crash resistant.

Take a look at it - comes with good drawings and an excellent construction manual.
Here I am hovering it under a tree. :)

I came across an article in AviationWeek magazine about some models produced by Aurora Flight Sciences called 'Skate' and 'Mamba'. Below are a description and some pictures of them from the aviationweek article. I was wondering if anyone had tried to replicate either of them and with what success.

"Aurora Flight Sciences... Some of the company's "skunk works" engineers, not long out of MIT, present two backpack UAV concepts that push the envelope of what flying machines look like."

"Skate resembles a rigid, folding kite and is powered and steered by two independently controlled, vectoring, electrically powered propellers. The aerodynamic configuration and propulsive control make the Skate essentially immune to conventional stalls and allows it to turn tightly between buildings or inside them."

"Mamba has been designed to provide a simpler, more compact design for a ducted-fan UAV. With twin counter-rotating two-blade rotors and a four-segment folding duct, Mamba collapses into a small volume. Its most unusual feature, though, is a "suck and stare" mode: it can fly into a ceiling and wall and use the fan to stay in place, using less power than hovering."

It's been a few years since I left this hobby. I used to work with foam, especially depron and similar type of foams. It was really to work with foam and the resulting planes were much more durable, light ...

I always liked Lancair made planes they really look beautiful and from the videos I have seen they seem to fly beautiful too. Some time ago I decided to model it on cad.

I nearly finished the solid model and I think it looks fine.

I can draw the parts for a nice skeleton and wing. The problem is to keep the elegant curves of the plane. I have seen in other threads that Hrpye has great success with his method for forming the skin. I can draw the ribs for a mold if anyone wants it.

I'm open to suggestions, although I won't be able to do it I hope someone decides to build the plane in the end.

You can see cad drawing of the model in the few pictures I attached.

Hi there! I recently had a crash that resulted in the demise of my nose cone on a plane that is no longer in production (buying spare parts is not an option).

I'm looking for ideas on how to go about making a nose cone? I've thought about molding (sanding) something out of foam, but the thought of a million statically charged pieces of foam getting everywhere in my shop doesn't sound so appealing. I don't have access to a vacuum machine either, so vacuum forming a replacement is not really an option either.

Does anyone have any quick, easy, relatively non-messy ways of making a new nose cone?

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

I have a plane that flew before, after some tweaking on the control surfaces and some power system changes. I have not been able to get it back into the air. it goes all crazy on launch and if I can get it under control it is real twitchie.

I have checked and rebuilt and rechecked everything on the plane, there is no reason for it to fly this way. its the second plane I have had this problem with another plane I was trying to design. I can't remember what I had rates and expo set to, but it was having the same problems, which I chalked up to the plane which was my first attempt at design.

anyway, thanks for any help you all can give me.

I have been interested in designing my own foam racer ever since I was introduced to 6mm Depron foam. The power of these little electric motors (2212-06) in the park jets that I have built from the free plans found on the internet from the likes of Steve Shumate and tomhe is just amazing. I have drawn a set of plans that I want to share to repay ‘sort of speak’ the fun I have had rediscovering the hobby of R/C and the discovery of the electric side of this great hobby.

This racer has a 30 inch wing span with 200 sq. inches of wing area, length, 24 inches. I like the looks of cheek cowls and so used them to supply cooling air to the battery and ESC.

The plans are not yet finalized but so far the fit seems to be good and I am testing a slightly larger wing to see if I can get the landing speed down a little more, it is not bad now but there is always room for improvement. It looks to be a fairly good sport plane as well, I have only flown it with one aileron but it could be built using both ailerons, rudder would also be an option but all that just adds weight. Building as designed it should weigh just slightly over one pound or less, it will climb vertically until it is too small to see. I have been using the Super Mega Jet Motor V2 brushless outrun motor with the 40 Amp ESC and the Mega Jet V2 2212-06 with the 30Amp ESC. I used a number of batteries so far from 1500 mAh 15C to a 2200 mAh C25 3S Lipo batteries. I am using the APC 6x4 electric prop. Same setup used in most all the parkjets I have built and flown. (I plan to try a S4 2200 mAh C30 battery soon. GO FASTER, Turn Left!)

http://www.graysonhobby.com/catalog/...mbo-p-414.html
I am currently using this motor 2212-6 from RC Times & their 30 Amp ESC.
http://www.rctimer.com/index.php?app=goods&spec_id=162

6mm Depron Foam Longwing Racer (2 min 34 sec)

Building

I start by cutting out all the parts, and then epoxy the carbon rod in the wing, plywood spar in the horizontal stabilizer and the plywood motor mount. In preparation before mixing the epoxy I clearance the cut on the HS with sand paper until the 1/32” plywood fit without forcing it in, just still slightly snug. I use the West System epoxy and one pump of part A and part B is more than enough to accomplish all of this. I use blue painters tape on both sides of the slot cut out for the carbon in the wing. I apply one wide stripe of tape that covers the slot completely on one side and two stripes of tape on both sides on the opposite side along the slot edges to keep the epoxy off the rest of the wing. The slot in the HS for the 1/32 plywood get a narrow strip of tape on one side only.

After the epoxy is mixed I let it stand a short time for the two parts to marry. I usually measure and cut the carbon rod during the marriage of the epoxy. I stand the 1/32” plywood up in the paper cup and using a sharpened tongue depressor to apply the epoxy from the top and let it run down until it is completely covered with epoxy. (Yes, I use disposable gloves when working with the epoxy.) Once coated, I slide the 1/32 plywood spar into the slot and work the epoxy into the ends and along the length of the slot before wiping off the excess epoxy with a paper towel. I lay the HS on a flat table with waxed paper top and bottom and a book on top until the epoxy cures, (about 3 hours).

With the wing on a piece of waxed paper I mix in a table spoon of micro balloons in the remaining epoxy for the carbon spar and motor mount. Once the epoxy/micro balloon mix is smooth I fill the slot about ¼ full the enter length with this mix. Then place the carbon rod in the slot and press it down gently, allowing the excess epoxy to rise to the top of the carbon. I make sure the carbon rod is pressed completely down to the bottom of the slot then fill and level the epoxy over the top of the carbon rod. Once satisfied the carbon rod is completely embedded in this mix I place another piece of waxed paper over the top smoothing out the epoxy level with the tape under the waxed paper before placing books on top to hold the wing flat until the epoxy cures.
I then epoxy the plywood motor mount to the foam motor mount part F-1a and set it aside to cure. After three hours I check the remaining mix to see that it has cured and if so pull the tape off the HS and the wing, top and bottom making sure I remove all the tape. If there are any voids in the epoxy around the carbon rod I fill them with spackle before placing the wing and HS back between the waxed paper and placing the books back on top, leaving them to fully cure over night.

While the wing and HS are curing you can start the fuselage assemble by gluing the fuselage lower doublers on the sides with 3M 77 contact cement (or the contact glue of your choice, being sure to make a left and right side!) I usually apply a heavy coat of 3M 77 spray and immediately apply the doublers to the fuselage sides, then immediately removing them, this transfers the glue to the sides. Let them dry slightly before re-joining them together permanently. Once the doublers are fixed to the sides you can cut out for your servos at your favorite location. Install the F-2 & F-3 formers to one side of the fuselage sides using ultimate RC glue making sure they are square. Once the formers are set on the first side I glue the second side to the formers, making sure the two sides are square. While the formers dry to the fuselage sides I assembly the cowl cheeks together and set them aside to dry. While you wait for the glues to dry you can sand the leading edge of the rudder round and if you want that extra edge in speed, you can taper the trailing edge too.

its made simply from two depron triangles, one right and one isosceles. glued perpendicular to each other.

i use the receiver and servos from parkzone's sukhoi, and the motor from the blade msr, which give it more than enough power for vertical takeoffs, it is three channel, with a bomb drop soon to come, and i will be flying a counter rotating version at efest this year!

this is the first version. with a few revisions to come. tell me what you think and i hope you like it!

pics will come soon! as will plans!

This is by far my most stable scratch-built so far. The body is made from elmer's foam board. The vertical stablilizer and engine mount are made from 1/2 " foam from my local hardware store. I'm really looking forward to tweaking my controls and balancing. I also plan to install a camera up front for some on-board video.
