My plan is to one day have a spitfire representing 309 Squadron RAF which was based at Middle Wallop during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire is my all time favourite WW2 Plane. 309 Squadron has its roots in West Riding which was my home county for many years. The Squadron code was PR which are my initials. Plane W if she ever existed would complete the personalisation of the spitfire for me.

Consequently I wish to find a scale model of a Spitfire that I can build. I'd be happy buying a foamie or indeed a kit to build and would like to have ailerons, elevator flaps and retracts plus rudder as the ultimate.

Looking for strong recomendations on which to buy, not too big, preferably electric, i'm dubious about having a petrol engine model but will consider if i can find a suitable electric. Max size 1/12th scale.

grateful for all ideas.

After fighting with another manufacturers A-10 foam glider, I ran across this 'New' A-10 on Hobby-Lobby. As an Electron member at Atlanta Hobby, I ordered one from them and it arrived yesterday.

So, I opened the box, took a quick peek inside and was pretty happy with what I saw and then back to work for the rest of the day. Last evening, I started my build.

It seems to me that they have been reading the forums. A lot has been addressed which were brought up as weak areas with other products. First, the foam seems a bit more dense. CF wing rod. Heavy enough LG. A very nice canopy and several other areas are nice.

The kit is not only a receiver ready ARF, but all servos, linkages, ESCs and wiring is already run. I had it RTF in about 2 hours including set times for 5 minute epoxy.

I opted for a dual receiver input on ailerons. This meant I did not use the included Y-cable, but instead provided my own short servo leads to the receiver. My kit did not include any velcro for battery hold down. I don't know if that was an oversight or the way they are. Those were the only two things I needed to add besides glue... so far.

The CF rod was just a tiny bit long. I pressed it into the foam on one side and it fit very nice. I needed to adjust the control rods to the elevator as they were set a bit high at neutral on the servo. Ailerons were a bit off from neutral, but they appear to be about perfect for aileron differential.

The instructions say to place the ESCs end to end so that the cooling fins are exposed under their vented cover. I tried to do this, but it pulled the battery connector cable into the fuse too far and would require an extension to connect the battery. I'm going to try it with them stacked and keep tabs on temps to start with.

The motors were installed... This was all just too easy and actually a delight to build. The paint and graphics are all very nice for a foam model. The pricing is certainly right as it includes the brushless outrunners, escs, servos and even a 3s 2100 lipo and charger!

I have not had the chance to do the maiden yet. I have held it in my shop, nose up and under full power it almost holds itself up. I'm doubting it will have unlimited vertical, but certainly plenty for loops. Once moving forward, it might just have enough ram effect to continue vertical for at least some distance. It is a small enough model though, that I don't expect to be flying very far away. The only other consideration I have at the moment is that the model is basically all gray. Orientation could be an issue. It does have some yellow on the tips of the fins. I suppose I could add some yellow to the tops of the wings and it would look too bad. Really, I just want to fly it and am not really worried about perfect scale looks.

There were a few parts not shown in the manual. These were decorative foam parts. They mount on the fuse and it is clear where they go into the indentations.

If this flies as good as it went together, I'm going to be a very happy customer.

Has anybody else built one of these yet? If so, how does it fly and do you have any hints?

So, modification time.

I first added a Du-Bro #375 tailwheel bracket kit. I ran this right up to the rod coming out of the bottom of the rudder and added a larger collar so the Wheel linkage would be locked in. Pretty easy modification.

I next started to see what I had to work with in the wings. I was hoping the block that the stock gear is attatched to was a bit bigger then it was but not so. I purchased some runners already grooved for the gear strut and added some blocks to mount it to. I used the stock hole location for where the gear strut goes into the wing as well as bending the stock gear wire. That was the toughest part.

In the end it looks pretty good and some testing proved here to steer better on the ground then it did with the trike gear. I have a set of Robart Robostruts on the way to finish it off. I was worried how she would balance but with the front stock gear and block removed a simple slide back of my battery and she's spot on.

Note......I am not sure how this would work with the stock motor/battery combo. I have been running a Turnigy C4250-700 on a 4S 4400 Lipo. An awesome power upgrade.

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum, and also to R/C airplanes. In the past, I've been into electric R/C cars and boats, but I've been curious about getting into aircraft.

I've got this 4-5 year old electric 4-engine B-29 "FiFi," which steers by differential thrust rather than moveable control surfaces, and I have never been able to keep it in the air for longer than 20 seconds. It flies great until I try to make a turn...tap the stick gently in either direction, and the plane cartwheels into the ground. (I don't know how well balanced the plane is...I never knew about glide tests until literally yesterday). I've had 3 catastrophic crashes that have broken the fuselage, wrecked nose gear, and bent a tailplane. But because of Elmer's glue, the plane has been restored to one functional piece every time. Fortunately, the wings have never been broken in a crash. After the last crash, however, I decided that the plane just doesn't want to fly as-is, and it now just hangs on static display from my ceiling. Lately, however, I've been wondering about getting it to fly again.

I stumbled across an old review thread from this forum yesterday, and it was only then that I learned of people actually retrofitting these B-29s with workable control surfaces and such. Does anyone know where I could get a parts list and instructions for adding the necessary servos and other parts to set the plane up with working elevators and rudder? Pictures and/or diagrams would be great, too; I know very little about R/C aircraft. Thanks!
