Guys ...

I'm in the market for a full function 2.4Ghz radio now that I've "tested" 2.4Ghz for the last 2 to three years with my relatively cheap BUT trusty Futaba 6EX. :D

But here's my dilemma ... I can't decide between Hitec's new Aurora 9, Futaba's 10CAG or Airtronics' 10SD-10G! :o I like some things about all of them and have a few dislikes about them too.

Now since I've always been a Futaba man my first tendancy was to lean Futaba'a way but one of the things that I do NOT like about them is the fact that their receivers are very expensive relative to the others. :mad: So here're my likes and dislikes about these three:

Futaba 10CAG

Likes ...

- Looks great! (Cmon' everyone like a cool looking toy! :))
- Proven 2.4Ghz technology (first hand experience)
- It's a Futaba! :)

Dislikes ...

- Expensive receivers
- Programming can get a little complicated. Now keep in mind that since I've never owned another brand I have nothing to compare the programming ease (or lack thereof) to. However I have heard that Futaba's are notoriusly unnecessarily complicated in terms of their programming and I must say that it's stumped me more than a few occasions EVEN with my simple 6 channel TX! (6EX)

Hitec Aurora 9 (Keep in mind this is only based on what I've read and seen online)

Likes ...

- Love the touchscreen. (the size especially)
- Inexpensive radio AND receivers relative to the others.
- Programming features up the ying yang!
- Reportedly easy to program

Dislikes ...

- Not in love with the plasticky look
- REALLY not in love with the wire hanging out back!
- Concerned with the fact that its so new there may be quite a few bugs to iron out. (bugs are reportedly starting to show already. Re: servo wagging, hard to see screen in bright light etc)

Airtronics 10SD-10G

Likes ...

- Looks great AND looks expensive! (Cmon' everyone like a cool EXPENSIVE looking toy! :D)
- Proven 2.4Ghz technology (I have not found any reports about brownouts, glitches etc)
- Reportedly one of the easiest radios to program!
- Appears to have a TON of programming features.
- Reportedly the fastest radio in its class. (not a biggee for me but ... )
- Receivers appear to be cheaper. (at least cheaper than Futaba)

Dislikes ...

- Could the display screen be any smaller? :(
- Availability (radios and receivers) seem to be a lot less than the other brands.
- It's an Airtronics! Before you stone me for making that comment ... what I mean is that I'm thinking that there must be a reason that the Airtronics is not NEARLY as popular as the other players in this market. Some folks in my club have never even heard of the brand! So the question is ... what is that reason? :rolleyes:

So ... you see my dilemma. :o

Now based on my needs what would you guys recommend?

- I'm just a sports pilot. (but want a radio that I can continue to grow into and have for at least a few years)

- Programming ease is very important to me.

- I'm budget conscious.

- "Looks" are somewhat imprtant to me. :p

Now before you give me your 2 cents, I'd really appreciate your being as unbiased as possible. I'm sure that the Futaba guys will have their reasons for recommending Futaba, the Hitec fans recommending the Aurora and the Airtronics owners ... theirs as well.

So ... it would be nice if I can get feedback from people who have experienced all three radios ... not necessarily OWNED all three, but at least had some experience with them. ;)

Thanks in advance for your help, guys!

Thanks, hoping for a quick response.

Peak Electronics has a tester driver.

Hello,

I'm thinking to buy a new Tx.
First my eyes went of course to a new 2.4Ghz Tx, but then I have started to think what will I do when I'll need to buy some extra Rx. As of today with my 6 EX FM/PCM I can go to http://www.hobbycity.com and buy some very cheap FM Rx.
My understanding is that with 2.4Ghz technology Tx(at least module)/Rx have to be of the same brand.
The 10CG, I'm looking at has an integrated 2.4Ghz module, so I guess I will be able to use only Futaba Rx and not a cheaper Corona Rx?
Therefore would be buying an "old" 10C that has an external 72Mhz module that can be swapped with a 2.4Ghz Corona Module be a better option?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)
Regards
Hervé.

Just bought a DX5e, and have yet to regret it. Here's a question: It's set up with throttle left (i.e. mode 2, I think). Fine, so I put my elevator right. I want ailerons and elev on different sticks though, so I'd like to have ailerons left. But ailerons and elev are supposed to be together on the right stick on that radio. That's not a pure naming convention, since the RX has two aileron receptacles (a feature I'd like to use). Also, if I switch on delta mixing, it puts the two mixed channels on one and the same (the right) stick, but again, I'd like to have those on different sticks, too. In effect, I'd just like to have changed the left-right channels between the two sticks. Is it possible to do that without too much messing around with the guts of my radio? For the time being, I just plug my ailerons into the rudder receptacle with a Y-harness.

Any comments?

edit: Reading through other posts, I think what I have is mode II, but what I want is mode IV, if that clarifies things.

Hi Guys

I have a Spektrum 2.4ghz DM8 Module installed on my Hitec eclipse 7 and have problems with the spektrum TX module (I think) not powering up.

About 80% of the time now when I turn on the TX there is no light that comes on inside the spektrum module. I've verified all the pins on the hitec tx are nice and straight and present, and that bind button isn't stuck or something.

when I do turn on the tx and the light inside the DM8 module turns on everything functions as normal.

My first thought was that there was a electrical connection problem but even if I wiggle the module when the light is on inside the connection seems solid.

anyone have an issue like this?

I am looking to get a new radio. My all time favorite is the 10C. I then thought i might as well invest a few bucks more and get the 12FG or the 12Z. However, i then came across the 8FG...so my question is this:

how does it compare to an "older" futaba radio? i am not a futaba expert but i have seen the 14MZ and 12Z being around forever. i don't know if they updated anything on those radios but it seems like they didn't. what i mean is:
if you compare a 2000 Mercedes S600 to a 2010 C300, the 2010 model, even though being the "cheaper" model, it will win hands down.
can you say the same about the 8FG and a 12Z? is the new cheaper model better than the older more expensive model...

thanks,

Well, my Hangar 9 1/4 Scale PNP Piper Cub came in yesterday and I got it together in a few hours last night. I went to set the control throws today and after having the receiver battery on for a few minutes I began to smell a very odd stench. I began to look for the source and at my dismay I noticed that my throttle servo was hot and was no longer working. I immediately turned the plane off and removed the servo. The bottom of the servo casing was melted. I just can't seem to figure out what the problem was. The servo is a JR DS821 Digital servo that came factory pre installed. I opened it up to find that the gears are all in perfect shape but the lower half in not so perfect shape. Check out the picture. Anyone got any ideas???

Hi all,

Today I recived my new HK-6X system. I made a short "review" on the innards, and posted them here. After seeing that they use the TI rf chipset like corona does, I tried what I first thought to be impossible. I can sucessfully bind corona recivers to this system, and the new small parkflyer reciver that comes with the HK-6X system can be bound to corona TX modules. IMHO this now means that corona is really a very very very good alternative to spectrum in that it not only is more secure (corona transmitts on 3 DSSS channels, spectrum only on two), but way way cheaper.

Corona IMHO is a real winner.

I am asking this on behalf of my Dad, and I don't know the answer either. I'm too new at all of this. We went to an RC swap meet this past weekend and my Dad picked up a used radio and reciever set that came with servos. He took it home and was going to try it out and noticed that the receiver was missing the crystal...OOPS! Guess he should have taken the seller up on the range check outside if he wanted. Anyway, he called me and said it was a Hitec transmitter, and a Futaba receiver. I asked him if he could see the crystal or channel number on the transmitter, and he said there was no channel marking, just the 72.150. So would that be a Channel 18? Then he could just pick up a Futaba compatible RX crystal for channel 18 (or whatever channel it needs to be for a matching set)? He hasn't been in the hobby for quite a few years and was also asking about having to have the radio "re-tuned" by sending it in to the factory. I didn't think that was something needed??? I will be stopping over this weekend, so I will take a look at the radio myself then to see if I can see the channel marking. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!!!

EDIT: Trying a different "Model" does nothing either.

Rave Specktrum Repair Service

I had a problem with my DX7. As luck would have it the radio was a few days out of warranty. They repaired it at No Charge and shipped it back postage paid. Turn around time was twelve days. My only expense was getting it to their service center.

Good customer support is appreciated.

Careful! DX6i - Getting the most out of Channel 5 (PZ T28 BNF)

Man I loved my DX6i before I started to try and get a little technical. I have a Parkzone T28D BNF that came with the AR500 and the dual ailerons plugged into a Y and into the AILE port. There is a second AILE port, but that is just a 'dumb' reversed output of the first. I have had fun flying it but I thought I would experiment with Flapperons for even more fun! So I plugged the second servo into the 5th channel and tried to program the DX6i.

Using the built in DUALAILE under WINGTAILMIX
This would work, if you have a 6 channel receiver, but there is NO WAY TO ASSIGN CHANNEL 5 AS THE SECOND AILERON! Very frustrating and limiting in my opinion.

Disabling the default GEAR function and using a mix
Ok, so I can't tell the 6i to use channel 5 with its nifty built in mixes, but I should be able to disable the default gear function, and then mirror flap->gear and basically accomplish the same thing, right? Wrong. If you mix flap->gear (even with the trick listed below) it does nothing. And if you set the travel on GEAR to ^0% v0% in an attempt to disable the switch's function, the output of the channel will cease, even if. This trick was suggested because it worked with some radios in the past, but no dice.

Workaround #1
MIX1: (make gear into a proportional channel)
GEAR -> GEAR
D = -100%
U = -100%
Switch ON
Trim INH

MIX2:
AILE -> GEAR
D = +100%
U = +100%
Switch ON
Trim ACT

COOL, IT WORKS! Now I just have to mix in flaps and flaperons are mine! Oh wait, I burned up both of my mixes and the built in flap mixing won't work with this setup. So, this is worthless for anything past aileron sharing, which can already be done with the 'dumb' reversed aileron port.

Workaround #2
Now we are going to use helicopter mode and the gyro function.
Set model type to HELI.
MIX1:
AILE -> GYRO
D = +100%
U = +100%
Switch ON
Trim ACT

MIX2:
GYRO -> AILE
L = -100%
R = -100%
Switch ON
Trim INH

Now for all you robots out there, this will be a circular argument and your CPU will fry, and for that I apologize, but what this actually does is map the aileron potentiometer to GYRO, then reverse of the GYRO to AILE output. So now if you set up your GYRO values in the menu it will change both channels by the same amount, giving you flapperons! All you had to do was sacrifice all your mixes... Note: you may have to change the +/- values and servo reverse to get your surfaces to move correctly. I have the left aileron plugged into the AILE port and the right into the GEAR. I then set GYRO to 50/25 and my aileron servo reversed.

So this works for now, but I think I see a X9303 in my future. Anyone wanna trade :D
