I figured it would be a fun plane to toss around in between flights. I had ordered all the parts needed from Banana. Fan, motor, esc, servos plastic parts bag ect... All the ness. goods to get this lil jet airborn.

My package arrived today, about 2 weeks after ordering and a 100 bucks. In short, I have an esc that just doesn't work and I didnt get the plastic parts bag they charged me for. A kick in the pants and lesson learned, just goes to show.. guess I should have stuck to my guns on not dealing with their "type" of products and service.

they did provide good customer service upon ordering. but the product is plain crap. buyers beware.
dealing with them, returns, exchanges is not worth the future effort.

What I liked was that it came balanced - so that is a big plus for an alternative. It's going in a Predator UCAV. I have the Hoaya 4", but it's way too big to fit in and requires a lot of grinding/sanding of the mount.

Hi guys, back at Ejets some of you would have seen the new 4 bladed fan I've been working on. Since then I've been doing more testing, design refinement and a lot of manufacturing. It's now ready for official release. I'll fill you in with a little history behind it. The SM110-52's motor maxes out at 4.2kW continuous. Going for more power meant a longer motor, which meant kV would be lower and it would never realise that power unless you went to cell counts beyond all available esc's. I wanted to go up to 6kW, and the only way to get more power efficiently was with more rpm. This called for a new design of fan. I wanted something which gave more dynamic performance than any other fan out there, along with the versatility to be used with exhaust sizes from 90mm down to 80mm. This would allow the fan to be used in speed machines as well as heavy scale models. I wasn't interested in investing tens of thousands of dollars in injection moulding tooling, so it would have to have a hand laid carbon rotor. My experience with making the early 12 bladed rotors for the 110-52 told me that I wasn't going to go there again, so I went for 4 blades. Using 4 blades also means that the dynamic performance goal would be achieved without resorting to 12 months of CFD analysis to get 12 blades working together nicely. The only downside is that it doesn't have the cool sound of the 110-52. It's not all that bad, a bit better than most of the low blade count fans. I went for a 15 series Neumotor because there are lots of different winds and lengths available, so the customer can pick and choose just how much power and how many cells he wants to use. At the top end, a 1527-1.5Y on 12S will give you 5kW, although you cold add a cell and go just over 6kW. A 1524-1.5Y on 12S will get close to 6kW with the latest cells. down the other end of the power scale, a 1518-2Y will be in the 3.8-4kW region on 10S (I think - still waiting for one to test) which, combined with an 80mm exhaust) would be an absolute killer setup in a Spark.

The new fan is designated SM110-45, ie 110mm fan diameter, 45mm hub diameter. It has an FSA of 7913sqmm, or about 12.25sqin. A bit more than the 110-52, but still small enough to fit in most turbine ARF's and not suffer because of small inlet size. It's a rotor/stator config this time, simply because this offers great flexibility in terms of exhaust size. the motor tube is cnc machined from aluminium and is anodised blue to improve the surface emissivity, so that it cools down quicker in between flights (during running, cooling is primarily by convection, so surface emissivity has little effect, but when not running this surface increases emissivity about 10x that of machined aluminium). You'll also notice the cooling fins are machined with a curve to match the stators. I felt this was very important, as having straight cooling fins with swirling flow creates a lot of turbulence. The front of the motor tube is about 4mm larger in diameter than the rear of the rotor hub to allow ram air to be forced through the motor for even more cooling. The result is that I can run a 1524-1.5Y on 12S, drawing 5.5kW and have a motor winding temperature of only 75degC.

So, how does it perform? First, let me say that it wasn't designed for high static thrust. It was designed to give ultra high dynamic efficiency, nothing else was given as much importance during the deign process. I figured that if you wanted to do 200mph, you would have an excess of power available for takeoff anyway. Still, have a look at the static thrust vs power graph below. It really does give good static thrust, with a static efficiency right up there with the SM110-52 - something which still surprises me. It's designed to have a small exhaust, so you can choke it down to 80mm if you like, and get very high efflux velocities happening. When you do this, you'll notice the static thrust dropping roughly in proportion to the drop in exhaust area, and the efflux velocity rising at the same rate.

We've been testing it in a few aircraft now, and it's showing that it is probably the most efficient fan in the big EDF market. Mike from Performance EDF has been flying one in his BVM Maverick for some time now, it goes superbly, as those present at Ejets will remember. We've also had one in an Electra, replacing the original fan resulted in a power drop of 10-15%, outright speed wasn't affected but vertical performance is just crazy. We'll choke it down a bit more to see just how fast it will go. The guys from Esprit have been flying one in their BVM Bandit. It weighs about 18lb RTF (I think - Zb?) and flies very well, it recently won an award at Georgia Jets for (I think) best EDF.

Unlike the 110-52, the 110-45 will be available without the motor. I'm doing this because I know a lot of you already have a suitable motor, and because it's very simple to assemble. The rotor is held on to the motor shaft with a simple tapered collet. The motor is a precise fit inside the aluminium motor tube, you do need to apply some thermal grease, though, to make sure the thermal interface is complete.

The recommended retail price with a 1527-1.5Y fitted and test run is $830US, without motor it's $525US. Currently, my US distributors have a few units on their way so check them out first.

I wanted to see how the BigExtreme motor worked with the Haoye 5" fan. Jim & Scott at XPS let me use one of their motors (This one has a 677 kv) to try with the fan. It it works it will be a nice low cost power system (aprox $200.00). I'm not looking for or excepting Dynamax type numbers. Jim & Scott are going to run it up on their test stand at Az Jet this weekend. Here are the assembly pictures. I had the metal adapter made for me. If this works out I'm be able to get them for $20.00 ( Need to order 100 sets). I do have a CAD file of the parts.
On with the assembly, You will need to sand all the parts to give the JB Weld something to bite into. I felt bad having to put grind marks on the BigExtreme motor. Clean everything with alcohol. Mix up the JB Weld and locate the parts as shown.
After the adhesive cures, you will nee to trim the back of the fan down. I used my drill press and a dremel cut off wheel. Set the height to 3.35 inches, Trim the motor tube down. Temp slide in the motor, the rear will be a tight fit. Mark the two spots for the locking tabs. Remove the motor and trim area.
Slide motor in and mount with four 4 mm allen head bolts(put blue Lock tite on motor mount holes before) .
Next install the 8 mm rotor adapter on the shaft. Mount balanced rotor and tighten nut. You are ready to go.
Fel free to ask any questions here.
Is there any advice or guides to optimum duct geometry? I'm just after a simple appreciation of what the area ratio should be for the fan, inlet and exhaust nozzle for optimum performance.

I was using the standard intake but will switch to the straight shroud when Air Sally's ducting arrives for my EF 16. Also, this was bare exhaust which I'm thinking will be constricted to 85% FSA. That should increase the current draw (to the 35A spec) but I'm wondering if the thrust/ speed trade will actually improve.
Bungee launches great, but coudy over cast day sucks!
They do it with micro indoor stuff, but I see no reasons why a jet with video transmitter and OSD etc could not take a stab at a carrier landing, complete with arrestor wires and catapults.

Oh, and I mean, a carrier actually on water...
