Also any info on installing mech retracts would be appreciated. I bought some Robart 6oo's for it based on another pilot's HK Spit....

Hi All

I'm trying to find what airfoil, section, was used on the C.I. I know they where built by Hansa and under contract with UFAG and Phonix. I've just about every book on the subject but trying to find definitive references is practically non existent. The PDF attached is the closest I can find so far. It's similar to a GOE57, but not quite. It's closer still to the 5th Hansa Brandenberg file in Compufoil. All the other Gottingen sections listed in Profili don't match. I want this for a free flight scale model. Using the section attached what do you think? Mount it at 3 degree's? It's thin but buildable if I carbon cap the wing and washout the ailerons. Any help would be really appreciated.

Have you ever wanted to build a full scale homebuilt plane?

I'm not sure I would, even if I could afford it, but it sure is fun to think about.

Here's what I would do--

Pick up plans for the classic wood and fabric Pietenpol Aircamper. Take a year off and use my shop for construction and then spend the summer barnstorming across the country. The original used the trusty Model A engine, but mine of course would be a state of the art electric.

With that fantasy in mind, I'm planning on building a 1/5 scale model of my imaginary plane.

I'm using a rendition of the original scale plans which I found on Ebay for $12. These plans were printed in a 1969 magazine, American Aircraft Modeler. I took them to the neighborhood print shop and had them blown up to a 68" wing span.

I might very well be in over my head with this size plane so I'm trusting the fine folks at RC groups to help me out. Thanks in advance!

-Steve

Hi all,
I'm back to designing a hardly modeled bush plane, My issue is that I'm not sure of the air foil used. I do have a good side view which I have been able to duplicate, but i wanted to see if i could get it more accuratly. Is there any on-line programs/books available to use for reference? You'er probably wondering what plane? its the Sherpa(www.sherpaaircraft.com), in 71", 48.5", 35.5" wingspans. I love the way the flaps work, ect... before I get the wings to far, i want to see if i can get these somewhat correct. I want to try a scale type wing before going to a flat bottom. I attached a photo showing a wing profile.
thanks for any input.

Hiya all,
i am in the process of building a Peter Rake 40" sopwith pup and would like to
be able to fly it with a scale or near scale sized prop. from what i can see i think about 11" diameter prop would be close, i am working on an all up weight of approx 36oz, i would like to ideally be able to use my 3S1P 2200Mah
batterys as i have a good stockpile of them from the rest of my fleet, and like to standardize with batterys. i do realize that this may not be possible and i my need to go the 2S route, but it would be nice. i would also like a scale looking prop if anyone knows of a good option, oh and obviously to fly at a scale like speed.... and a million dollars, and a ferrari, and never ending beer, and a bevy of hot chicks..... and! ;) any ideas as to a suitable power system would be muchly appreciated, i do tend to power most of my planes with HobbyKing components mainly turnigy, but if other flavored components are better suited then so be it!

cheers guys

This is the first build log that I have ever done, so I figured why not for the Fun Build. The plans I'm using are for a 45" span diesel powered free flight from the July 1987 issue of the British magazine Aeromodeller. I'm not changing the size at all so it should be an easy electric motor conversion. The rudder and elevator areas are huge but this thing has a healthy wing area.
I consider myself a free flight scale guy first and foremost but these laser cut R/C offerings from Tritle are just too cool to pass up. I have three of these R/C beauties under my belt now, all with rudder/elevator/throttle, so I think I may build ailerons on this one.
Don't expect lots of progress on this until after the first of December. My wife and I are heading to northern New Mexico to visit family for Thanksgiving so I'll be away from the building board for a bit over a week.
I still need to figure our the motor for this one....with all this wing area I'm thinking big prop, low RPM...Outrunner?
Here is a shot of the Hummingbird at Old Warden in England and a part of the plan.

I built this gun for a 1/4 scale Nieuport 28C. In the photos of other Nieuports I could not see that the gun had the levers installed. Does anyone know if the gun in this format was used on the Nieuports or was it modified for aviation use.

Any help much appreciated.
Cheers

I have been reading the threads on RCGroups now for a year or so, and noted the things said by many other builders of model aeroplanes, and I would like to add my thoughts. As one modeller said on here some time ago, the American Model Magazines are a waste of money and time. He described them as catalogues, and he was right. Catalogues of ARF's and expensive large models and engines , and it made me realise that these threads have taken the place of the "old" magazines, that were the heart and soul of model aeroplanes, how to build, fly, design them.I thank people such as Ivan Pettigrew and Peter Rake(to name two, there are more out there)who have given us plans of models that can be built from balsa glue and covering.I have watched the progress of modelling from the 1930`s to the present, through it`s many `fads`and new technology and materials, and ultimately the ARF. I have two ARF`s, a glider and an electric Pitts Special, so don`t take me to task for knocking ARF`s .I am not doing that, they now Belong! What I am saying is, that the Rakes and Pettigrews have filled a great void that has developed over the years in the realm of easy to build models from `sticks and tissue, and plans that a beginner can understand. Maybe their efforts will encourage more people to experience the joy and satisfaction of seeing their own creation sitting on that table at the club field.I know I have turned to small electrics and gliders again. I shall turn 88yrs old on Nov 28th, and I am still building models! The average age of members in my club in Penticton B.C. must be in the 45 yr. range, maybe the computer will bring that age down a bit if more young people can be encouraged to build one of the models we see being built on here.Manzano Laser Works, Bob Holman, and many more people now produce `short kits`of laser cut ribs and formers which takes the tedium out of building from plans, another big plus for our young people, since kits are disappering off the market. Thanks to Peter and Ivan ,for keeping me at the building bench!Ken Gregory.

I'm presently severely bashing a downsized Comet Taylorcraft plan, turning it into an Auster.
Here's the plane I'm modeling: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Untit...ext_id=1338118

It took three minor crashes to get the model flying right. The model is rock steady now and very responsive to the control inputs. When approaching the stall speed, the wing starts rocking. This was great to find out. If ignored, the model will just start sinking fast hitting the ground hard. I found this hard way. At this time I am re-finishing the outside of the model to hide scars from test flights.

Mainly as a way to get vacuum form moulds done, but in essence there is no reason why a complete 3D printed object, like an engine or machine-gun cannot be done.

The real question is, is it worth the price?

Its about $5 per cc of object. More for weird shapes and colors - cheapest is plain structural white.

My real question is whether people are prepared to pay tens, if not in larger sizes, hundreds of dollars for fine scale details.

To be honest, it doesn't look much more expensive than laser cutting 200 cylinder disks for a large radial engine etc etc.

Could make really nice dashboards too, or even pilots..
