I've got a pair of razor 24vdc scooter motors and am wondering if anyone has used these in rc boats?
thanks

Hi BigDutch,
Sorry I haven't used them personally but I know some that do, if they are the 200 watt ones, look for the big 18 foot battle ships on the Tygum Lagoon thread, they use 4 each, turning roughly 80 mm props with a 2:1 reduction if I remember correctly. What is your project?

My wife and I used to have Bladez scooters with 24 volt 450 watt motors. Tons of torgue. These motors would be great for large tugs. The scooters were very well made and heavy duty. Weighed about 80 pounds each. 10 inch ballon tires, etc.
I took the motors off for routine mantenance and they were heavy. You would have to have a pretty big ship to handle the weight of these things, especially if you put four of them in there. Nothing would be able to stop it though. :D

hmmm?
I just happen to be working on a 1/35th scale BB (battleship) that will be over 17 feet long and displace something like half a ton (haven't had the courage to figure it out yet) those sound like just the ticket. My current plan is to use a pair of car batteries driving a pair of trolling motors, wonder how the scooter motors would do on 12V?

Hi Fooman,
With the scooter motors, stick with the designed for voltage and current, I've got both a 100 watt and 200 watt one, never had a project to use them in yet :D. The torque drops a lot when you under volt them, If your using 2 car batteries you have a ready 24 volt supply already. They generally spin at 2400 rpm at their designated voltage and overheat if you try to run higher than their watts. 24 volt 200 watts has a current rating of 8 amps. A 100 mm 4 blade prop at that rpm and voltage draws 5 amps on a similar motor in my Nexus Tide to give you a ball park.

Hi Nick
Don't have a definite project in mind as I have a couple of hulls these could go in. They are marked 2500rpm 180w Yong Hong Motor. Feels like 16 poles just from turning the shaft around 1 turn and very high torque. Digital bathroom scale shows them at just over 4lbs each. Suitable for a Mr.Darby hull maybe?

Hi BigDutch,
Yes I reckon they would go well in a Darby, never seen one for real but understand they need a huge amount of ballast. :D

thank you very much, it was just spitballing a thought I think I can lay my hands on any number of 12 volt motors. I do appreciate the information though
