I just received this e-mail from the Wisconsin Maritime Museum about the model contest and display May15th - 17th.
Hello, Modeler Friends!
I am happy to send you the registration information for this year’s 33rd Annual Midwestern Model Contest & Display! You will have three different attachments, so please be sure to print all of them.
We are excited to welcome David Antscherl, noted author of The Fully Framed Model, HMN Swan Class Sloops, 1767-1780 as one of our symposium speakersthis year! We’re also working on this year’s t-shirt, which we hope will feature a classic 1930’s era Burger cruiser, Angus.
In an effort to cut down on costs, if you’ve received this e-mail, you will not receive registration materials in the regular mail. This same information will soon be downloadable from the website, so pass the word! If you have any questions, concerns, or problems downloading and printing the information, just let me know!
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year, so we hope you can be part of the celebration by participating in this year’s model contest. I’m looking forward to seeing you!
Best,
Wendy

Just had my neighbors from Manitowoc spend last weekend with us. Is it too soon to ask then to recipricate? :)

pops52, It never hurts to ask. There are several WSBA/RC Groups members who will be there. Boater_Dave, Greg Knipp, J Shander, myself, and a couple of others. The museum sets up a pool in the parking lot across the street for the WSBA and contest participants to run in Saturday and Sunday.
As far as the museum exhibits there is a commercial fishing exhibit, the permanent exhibit of the local maritime industry, the engine from the carferry Chief Wawatam, and the USS Cobia.

The sun tried to peek out throughout the day. The big problem was gusty winds. We had a few boats blown off the tables with some minor damage done. Cars were parked at the upwind end to act as a block. It was somewhat successful.
Gusts hit 30 mph. As an example of the strength on the way up we passed a semi which was hauling an empty cargo container. The container was in the ditch mangled and the trailer was sprung and twisted. It looked as though the front of the container became unlocked and blew around then off of the trailer.

Nice pictures, Prins! :) Looks like a fun day except for the wind.... We get gusts like that at Spreckels in SF sometimes that cause us all to run for our tables!

Thanks Prins. Hope you went to Tony's afterward for a beer and pizza. Was too bad about the wind. I think we got it today in PA. Looks like there were some nice specimens though. Thanks for sharing the photos.
...Perhaps next year.....

The guys usually walk over to Pizza Pit a block away for lunch. The pizza is good but they have a really good toasted Ham & Swiss sandwich I look forward to. Those staying over for the contest have a banquet at a supper club Saturday night.

Great pictures Prins and there's some mighty fine modeling going on there. Looks kinda chilly at the pond so that's good enough reason to stay inside. Guess Tom still has the Chinese Squint so can't see the pictures too well. Ha!
Anyway thanks for posting them as I for one will not ever get to see the show in person but now I have vicariously. Pete

This year I didn't get to talk to many of the contest participants so I'm not sure of where they all came from. I believe the modeler who built the excursion steamer (row 5 first pic) was from Canada. Last year there was a modeler from New York and the year before a couple of guys from Colorado. There is usually strong representation from Illinois every year. So, we can't take too much credit for the overall quality of the contest. The WSBA members who entered did do the club proud though.

34th Annual Midwestern Model Ships & Boats Contest and Display.
This just in from Wendy at the museum:
Hello to all our wonderful modeler friends!
I just wanted to fill you in on our 34th Annual Midwestern Model Ships & Boats Contest and Display in Manitowoc, Wisconsin which will take place Friday-Sunday, May 14-16, 2010.
Mark your calendars! It will be another fun weekend with great friends, great models, and GREAT WEATHER! (I can only hope!)
Saturday speakers will include Steve Wheeler and John McGann.
There is a possibility that Mr. Halsey Herreshoff of the great Herreshoff yacht design family may be able to attend our event. I’m wondering if any of you or someone else you know have built models based on Herreshoff designs, and if so, if you’d be willing to bring them to the event this year as an extra feature. It could prove to be a really interesting feature for this year’s event! Please contact me if you are interested in doing this, or if you know someone else I can contact. And please, as always, pass this information on to the rest of your modeler contacts.
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you in May!
All the best,
Wendy

I hope you won't mind , this is only slightly off topic.....
Look for this on your PBS TV listing ,
"Lost and Found : The Legacy of the USS Largarto " (Submarine SS 371 )
This I believe was done in association with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum ,
because so many subs were built in Manitowoc during WWII .(Largarto was)
This 1 hour program just aired here in Chicago 2 days ago , and was very
well done and interesting to watch . This sub was lost with all hands , and
the boat was recently found - this show chronicles the search for it .

I have never entered the contest so I don't have a copy of the rules. My suggestion would be to contact Wendy Lutzke at wlutzke@wisconsinmaritime.org for more information.
I spend my time out at the pool in the parking lot. Or at Pizza Pit up the street.:D

No , I have not been up to the Maritime Museum - BUT -you have given
me an idea . Since it is quite a cruise from Chicago to there , I will see
if 3 other club members would like to make a road trip some day . It's got
to be all of three hours to drive there , so plenty of time to talk RC sailing
and make plans for next season . We will have our first winter meeting
soon so I'll discuss it then . who knows , maybe the whole club would like
to go ?
