I found an old RC car in the dumpster at work today and it had a new 7.2 volt
3500 Mah NIHD battery pack in it. I use NICAD batteries in my boat and have a Dynamite mega 2 charger. the manual says it is for NICAD only. what do I need to charge this pack?

The instruction sheet on their web site does carry a warning that this charger is unsuitable for NiMH, and warns specifically against using them with it. Trickle charging should not pose a problem, but is likely to take a long time.

Well, that depends. If you are going to be upgrading your rig to include more advanced batteries (NiCd is REALLY old tech) then buying a new charger isn't such a bad idea. There are a lot of them out there that can handle anything from Lead-Acid to LiPo for not much money, sales down to $30 on some of the better ones.
If you never intend to upgrade, then yeah, don't buy the charger- sell the NiMh pack for a couple of bucks (if it is still good.)

You can charge the NiMh battery on your "NiCd only" charger. The difference is in the peak detection and switch to trickle mode.
All you need to do, is monitor the battery while you are charging it, for heat. Put your hand on it every so often and if it has gotten too hot, just disconnect it.
Otherwise, "voltage is voltage" and "current is current".

cool thanks, I use nicads cause I have about 50 1200Mah cells that came out of new discontinued batteries for power tools, think i paid $10 for the lot of batteries and dissasembed the plastic cases. I wanted to try the single 3500mah and see what kind of run time I get. currently i run 2 1200 6 cell 7.2 V packs in paralell.
