I just got a bunch of things from John R. Haynes and they look great. Some are resin, some are white metal. Do I need to rinse them with gentle detergent before applying glue and paint or is it ok to just proceed as they are?

Either will do, you are just removing grease from casting or even fingers.

Dish detergent is ok. A mold release agent (oily or waxy substance) is used so that parts will not stick to the mold. Because of this paint and glue will not stick well to the parts unless your wash the agent off.
Looks like Arrow5 and I were typing similar messages at the same time  :D

The hand soap might leave something of its own....

I have heard of people using those ultrasonic cleaners (some people also use them to clean dentures) to clean parts before they paint them. I personally would probably take my teeth out of the cleaner before putting the parts in.
