Well, I wanted to see if there is any interest in having a race?
It sure would be great to get out and have a little fun on the course.
Let me know if you are interested and lets make it happen.

Sweet! I've been there before, but where do you fly, in relation to the roundabout parking circle?
P-51flyer
Feb 10, 2009, 11:33 PM
If you are talking about the kinda "park" parking area then you just go right towards the stables. Right before the stables there is a path that goes down the hill. From the beginning of the path strait out to the ocean, down on the lower lip is where we fly. You will go down to the right then back left and up to the cliff.
Hope that makes sense. It is better if you turn right onto HWY 35 and make that immediate left into the stable area, go down a bit and there's a court type deal there that you can park along. Gets your car out of the way of all the tourists and traffic.
Val,
Good to hear from you! Been a while!

Tim,
I believe 3/8 is also the standing date for the NCSS F3F race. Have you talked to Rich about combining the events?
Mart
timbigley
Mar 04, 2009, 11:39 AM
Oooops, I did not realize that Mart.
I have spoken with Rich in the past and he does not want to do the walk.
With that said guys I will not be doing a race. I do not want to step on NCSS feet. However if conditions are good out at Thornton I will be there for a day of slope flying.

Well guys the Caldera Maidened successfully - wonderful day!!!!!!!!
Tim and Aaron were there to help out - Tim flew and I tried to copy his lines.
Great feedback - and landing - thanks Tim!!!!!
Wish they held the race at Thornton instead of the slot - the air as the sun came down started to shift more north but built to nominal 30# gusting to 38+ - sandblasted!! Aaron successfully landed his tool albit heart racing moment - good skills.
So I've found out the difference between the Caldera and 3M F3F - Caldera's are within a segment of light to moderate air!!! The bigger planes just carry more speed in heavy air! But that Caldera was on rails - not bounced around or anything!! Very stable.
Glad to hear that Tom @ F3X is getting more in - great plane.
BTW: Tim Bigley has a really great F3B winch - wish I had the funds, but wrong timing with taxes and such.
timbigley
Mar 09, 2009, 10:35 AM
I could not agree with you more Jack. Thornton is a world class slope for F3F and not to race there is just a shame.
I hear people complain about the short walk. I timed myself walking back up with all my gear and it took all of 7 1/2 minutes.
I got a chance to slap the Caldera around and I must say what a superb plane it is. Thanks Jack.
A few pictures I took with my new Canon 5d markii. I'm trying to get a bit of practice in before I leave to Spain in May.

My input is as follows:
These conditions are pretty consistent - you can work on the following
1) Trim, CG, balance, snap flaps, throws - get all sorted out in pretty much consistent conditions.
2) Practice consistent turning methods for building on skill and air conditions - you get to try out and consistently determine if the line or turn method provides the intended purpose before you go to a race. Your practice as the wind builds during the day will change, as the wind direction corners you have to change. This is important whether inland or coastal - to practice in consistent conditions to increase your skill level.
I got alot of help and inputs from both Tim and Aaron - and I can see immediately what was working and what was not.
So I see this as a tremendous opportunity - either for skilled or beginner. Great if you are planning on attending the inaugural "MOM Track Day" - get ahead of the crowd. Bring out that foamie or moldie - do some laps :)
OK done!

We had great conditions, great planes, great pilots, great friends . . . Only one cliff side adventure, and low 40's for a lot of fliers with a fast time of 40.19 by Mr. B. Nice meeting Neil who flew great and really impressed by Matt who laid down a 46 at his very first F3F race. Great flying gents.

I want to thank everyone that made it out for outstanding day.
We had a few new faces of the 9 pilots that made it out.
The conditions were 15-22W. If flown correctly it was possible to stay in the low 40's all day. Joe Foster managed to stay in the mid to low 40's all day.
I seemed to be 43-40 most of the time. Some of the less experienced all got a taste of the energy at times.
Most important is that no pilot had a issue with landing.
I think I need to stop going out with Aaron. The young man is doing very well with the "monkey see monkey do"method. I am sure he will be biting at my heels real soon.
Dominic flew his hand built Hurricane. He's one of the few left that build their own planes. It was turning and burning. I almost forgot Mickey was not flying it.
I sure hope we get to do it again real soon.

Man what a fun day! You know its good when you break your plane on the first flight but still have a good day! Think the break was my own fault but will figure out more later. Repair is under way already and will be ready to rock again soon!!!
Thanks to my pops for letting me fly his planes! I was able to lay down a few 44's and a 45 with his Viking set up differently then I fly. That is a awesome plane that is fast yet pretty forgiving. Next up...... We put my pops 57" Banana on the course. WOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Little planes always look like they move really quick but this proved it. I was able to lay down a 45!!!! The thing was allover but QUICK!
Good to see everyone out there yesterday. Hope you guys will come join us again soon!
