hi all
im new to air brushing but have got an aztec 470 air brush with a small
compresser the problem is that when i spray (humbrol enamel), to get the
spray out of the air brush i have to thin the paint down over 50% and then
it runs like mad?(tried several of the nozzles) the compressor(mantua model)
is only small it is a plastic box about 12*10 inch and i was wondering if
this is the problem as there does'nt seem too much pressure behind it! and
cannot be regulated , i have seen a compressor in b&q with trap and reg
which seems to be quite a resonable price would this solve my problems
as ive said im new to air brushing and would like to know the correct ratio
to thin my paint is 50/50 too thin orwould 70/30 be better??

Airbrushes like a minimum pressure of about 20psi to operate but 30psi is
even better.
A 50/50 mixture is pretty good as to be thin enough to go through a system
that was designed really for water based mediums.
Whenever you pressurize air it creates a type of condensation problem which
on large resevoirs can be seen as resolved by a weekly drainage via a tap
underneath the tank. On small compressors this water content has no other
else to go but through the airbrush, so if you can create a water trap to
eliminate even some of the water, things will improve. A big tank
pressurized to say 40psi and reduced to 20/30 psi also creates a
steady/constant air flow over a longer period which is good for any
spraying. There are other small tweeks, but these ideas should resolve most.

Do you do a lot of spraying ?
If you are in the UK perhaps you might like to cast an eye at this weeks
"Special Buys" at
http://www.aldi-stores.co.uk/index.htm
Be at your local shop before they open on thursday (normally there is a
queue!).
It has a 24 litre tank but I'm not sure about it having a water trap.
It ought be a bargain at £69.99 - IF you have the room to keep it.
