How much for BNF?
I asked Mike McConville about pricing, and he was pretty broad in his answer. He said between 100-150 dollars for BNF. I'm sure that's the range we all had in mind, anyway, with a little extra put on both ends for good measure. That being said, the little "Suki" flew like a champ. Harriers, knife egde, snap rolls, and seemingly unlimited vertical. They had two of them there on the floor at the same time. Probably had a bunch of them hidden in their trunk, as well. Weight is around 28 grams, and the flying speed was rather brisk. It would handle a little wind fairly well. They also took abuse well. I saw one smack the (rubberized) floor nose-in on a 30 foot downline, and then fly away. Looks like a winner! I'll be pre-ordering as soon as they'll let me!

Expect RTF prices to run 30 dollars more than BNF. Units probably won't ship for 6-10 weeks from now. Get in line!

Hi,
Currently there is no plan to offer an RTF (only BNF at the top).
We feel the DX5e is about the minimum tx we want to reccomend with this highly manueverable plane. Tx of choice is available separately (Any DSM2tx or Module system).
It is compatible with the mlp4dsm and other micro tx's, but we feel the experience will be best with a 'full size' tx.
I am thinking the weight they are flying is a little more than 28 grams (including battery), but that is in the ball park.
While as noted, it is capable of many 3D manuevers in the hands of a very skilled pilot, it will not really be positioned as a '3D' aircraft. It will be positioned as an aerobatic aircraft, which it delivers on very well.
Great flying plane.

I was there and got a few pics. I got a not so steady video that is only 21 seconds long. Sorry that I didn't know I wasn't allowed to shoot video but there is a sneak peek video on youtube. After seeing it in person I was ready to buy it!!!!!!!! I just have the Vapor and thinking about the Ember 2 BNF. I bought a Dynamic Foamy (http://www.dynamicfoamy.com/) which use the ParkZone gear. My Vapor has hundreds of flights and was looking to put it in a new frame since its a little rough. No landing gear and about a foot of tape on the leading edges to keep the film on. So my question is; what is the difference between the 210/Citabria Motor PKZ3016, the Vapor Motor PKZ3316, and the Ember Motor PKZ3216??? I know they have different gearbox's/props but not sure about the motors. Thanks in advance and but oh well. :) There are some more other peoples pics of it in the RCG Photo Coverage Forum (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=997747)

No rtf? LAME horizon. Real LAME!!! Maybe if it was a pnp but no, you gotta make it bnf, assuming that everyone has your dsm2 radios I take it? Well not all of us do, I fly an airtronics rds8000 (for good reason) so guess what. You just lost my business with this plane (and yes, the su-26 is my favorite aerobatic plane). That was a really really dumb decision. Maybe they will eventually release a rtf version. By then I probably wont care.

Fly or Die,
I here what you're saying but I think there is a good reason it's only BNF, you need a pretty good radio to get the most of this little guy. Any "included" radio that did a decent job would put the price over the top I bet. A dx5 is fairly obtainable for this type of plane it you can't use your RDS8000. Problably find a cheap used one.
I really don't think they did it to sell more radio's IMO.
My 2 Cents.

Hugo- As to the different PZ gearbox/prop combos; your best bet is the Cessna/Citabria gearbox. The Ember box is OK from a gear ratio standpoint, but the thrust angle built in is optimized for a high lift wing with a bunch of downthrust. As far as props are concerned, the Citabria prop has a slightly higher pitch, for a bit more top end. The Cessna prop gives a bit more static thrust for climbs. I'm not sure what the Ember prop would do, but it's not that expensive to try!

I think the BNF option is actually better. I'd rather have expo and other settings on mine — and while I don't mind the radios that come with the Vapor and such, this plane deserves something a bit spiffier.
Anxiously waiting!

The Horizon rep at the show told me that the "official press release" would be in mid to late March with dealer shipping to start a week or two following that.

I agree. Something that quick and aerobatic needs a radio with dual-rates, at a minimum. The ability to program in some expo or mix out whatever coupling is present in whichever example of the Sukhoi you buy would be better still.
If one wanted to be really cheap about it, they could use the Tx that comes with the Blade MCx. That has dual-rates on it. Of course, this particular plane looks like it goes much faster than anything else HH makes in that size, so a pilot is going to have to be pretty good to keep the Sukhoi inside the low-power Tx's glitch-free range.
I, personally, will be seeing how much of my tax refund I can put towards a DX7se, so I can put the Sukhoi on it, as I'm completely out of slots on my poor DX6i. I'm definitely going to buy a PZ Sukhoi. I may even buy two of them! And the guts, because they look like just the ticket to make a 16" T-28 Trojan (http://www.guillow.com/GuillowDetail.asp?UID=10429814&Num=1&prod=901&SeriesId=23&FamilyId=1#) conversion work.

Feb 09, 2009, 12:51 PM
well it's not that i wouldn't put it past horizon to force dsm2 on people, in this case it just makes sense. to keep the weight down you have to integrate the rx into a control board so ARF will never happen for logistical reasons. plus by standardizing on a control scheme you don't end up with 10 identical AA eating remotes only good for a single toy.

What is it made of? Looking at it I guess it's the same foam as the T-28 or Corsair? And how durable to the old "smash nose first into the ground" is it? I do like the price and will probably get one. Wish they made cheaper rx's for DSM2, though. JM2Cents worth.

it is unlikely that it is epp style foam like the trojan as its just too heavy for micros, i would guess its the same type of foam the ember wings are made from. but given the small mass it will hold up ok. maybe im wrong though

looks to be molded white Styrofoam
it is tuff as a boot
McConivlle
smacked the floor
and into other models in the air
he just picked it up and flew it...
it is NOT a beginners model....
it is a fully aerobatic """"Sukhoi""""
it is above an intermediate when really wrung out
but it has little tip stall tendancies
so if you hold off it should b no sweat...

It does have enough power to go straight up. It's not a hovering monster like some brushless foamies, but power looks to be more than adequate with good airspeed management

No, but I can say 2-gram brushless upgrade! A plane like this will go ballistic if given the right power. Power seems good stock, but how long have any of us left anything stock?

I was there talking to the rep that was flying it and he didn't know how it will be sold when launched (RTF or BNF). The Vapor, Ember 2, and the mcx heli are all DSM2 already and the Sukhoi will be an addition to that line but is a 4 channel model. I love this line of models. I did not have a DSM2 transmitter either but I decided to get a DX6i which will hold 10 models that I use for BNF only. That way I don't have a seperate controller for each model. I bought the DX6i (radio only) for less than $100 new on ebay. I have 2 BNF's already and the Sukhoi will be my third. It costs $30 extra for the RTF's. So after I get the Sukhoi it will finish paying for the DX6i compared to buying 3 RTF's.

Wherever you get it, make sure it's a new one. Spektrum had a run of bad stick potentiometers, resulting in a recall notice. You wouldn't want to find out you had a bad pot by making a hole in the ground!

Try dirtcheaprc.com. They deal in RC cars primarily, but carry the full line of JR radios. I got my X9303 from them. Service was excellent, and they had the absolute lowest price on the net. Todds is good too, they were within a few bucks of each other. I've bought from Powerlines as well, and he was great too. Between those three you can't go wrong.
I can't wait to get my hands on this model. First thing it's going to get is a paint job though! Can't have it looking like everyone else's!

You're absolutely right. You can do wonders with an airbrush and carefully selected paints or dyes. The trick is thin coats and minimum coverage, as well as leaving as much unpainted as you can stand.

You're right -- plus, you're dealing with white foam (which is a good base to paint on). Acrylics would be a good (and lightweight) choice.

Twenty bucks for the servo isn't cheap, but figure on eighty bucks for 4-channel gear for micros with six channel capability! I don't think Horizon charges your card until they ship, so you don't have to decide between paying now or later...At least that's my recollection from waiting for the Vapor.(Seems like a long time ago, now. My, how time flies!)

well it comes to $12.50 per week if you break it down into 8 weeks.
Seems reasonable

Can't quite tell from the photos, but does it have a real airfoiled wing or is it flat? What do you guys think about motor life etc...

if you watch this video, it seems to look like it has an airfoil -

Nice Vid. Best one yet. 99 bucks is pretty good I think.
Are the servos the same as in the MCX?

Well Horizon has announced that the Sukhoi will be available in the middle of March and MAP is $99.99 BNF only. They are bringing it out BNF only because it is NOT a beginner plane. If you would like to Pre-book one to buy please let me know. Thanks Sue

A question to anyone who got to watch this plane fly in person. I see that that it not a direct drive. I'm curious to know if the plane is noisy like the Citabria is? Or is it quiet like the Vapor? Thanks.

Hej Dora Nine.
I have a Kyosho EDGE 540, same motor-gearbox and prop, it is noisy, not much, but more than EMBER and Vapor and less than Cessna-CITABRIA. I don't now why, but hollow fuselage do it more noisy

For the record... It is certainly not the same prop.... Don't think it is the same motor or gearbox.

Sorry David
Same color, looks like same size, pretty much the same gearratio. I am pretty sure, but you now.

Motor is about an 8.5mm variety.... I am thinking the edge motor is smaller... The Sukhoi has vertical thrust to spare at 34g.

Hi David,
How is life treating you? Not to sure you remember me but we flew together many many years ago (1986 or so) at West Orange Sun Fliers near Valencia Community College in Orlando. How is working for Horizon?
PM me if you have some time, I tried sending you a PM but your box was full.

I saw this this thing fly at E fest and I knew I had to have one! I just got myself in line at Horizon. I just ordered two. One for spare parts.

Hi David,
I am moving up from the Vapor and do not plan to do aerobatics with the Sukhoi, therefore what issues will I have by using a LP5DSM tx?
Also, what is the wing loading of the plane?
Thanks for the info.

100 beans is pretty cheap but just like remingtonmoney is in the parts and they are not cheap. Might be better off buying two like skyjet mentioned.

Absolutely. For 99 bucks, you get prop, gearbox, motor, brick, servo, airframe, battery, charger, landing gear, belcrank, and even batteries for the charger! Try pricing that out as spares!

Yes that is right, now it is April 20th, or could be later, you know Horizon! guess I won't have it in time for the Toledo show. But who wants a Kyosho Piper Cherokee, I probably could have some of them for that show, would have to check to see if they will be back in for that!!

Of course money is a big factor on priorities with this hobby, but at $99 I decided to order a second one for the parts. I did that for my Ember 2 and I'm now flying #2 and using the first one for parts. You will also have 2 batteries and two chargers.
Also, I bought a DX6i for BNF only. I bought it new for $100 on ebay. The DX6i is a computer radio and will hold 10 models and I'm real happy with the radio. It's a good radio for the field or BNF. I think most people with the 5 channel, non computer, one model radio will upgrade to a computer radio at some point, so you might as well put that money into a DX6i.
Electric or bust! 9 inch to 110 inch.

Bob,
I have read somewhere they dont reccommend the small rtf tx's because they dont have the stick feel of the full size ones. Your lp5 should be fine.
I'm just curious though, if you don't plan to do aerobatics, then why buy an airplane that is specificly designed to do them?
