Hey All,
I've been sitting here freezing in Indiana for the past 3 mos. and I need to head south to fly!!! I'm off work the second week in march and I would love to be a guest at a good soaring site!! Maybe Georgia or Florida? (somewhere warm!!) Any suggestions or invite's? I'm not a contest pilot, just for fun. I have an E-BOT and a never flown BOT from a kit and I should have my AVA ready to go by then. I would love some tip's from an experienced AVA flyer!! I mostly fly giant scale gas (11 year's exp.) but last summer I started soaring and love it!! :D

Marc:

There's a guy here in Las Cruces with a new BOT (electric).

I have no propulsive units whatsoever, beyond an elderly hi-start and my own elderly arm (I fly DLG almost exclusively).

Weather today: gentle South breeze, ambient temp around 70. Yesterday was broken cloud, winds South about 7-10, and I still thermaled my handlaunch out and away for about 5 minutes. Today would have been bodacious soaring, but my wife and I went bike riding around the University campus instead.

I thermalled on Thanksgiving Day, the day after Christmas, and New Years Day and several times since. Las Cruces is the best kept secret in soaring. In addition, I work at White Sands Missile Range, and there are always raptors thermalling. I have taken my glider out at lunch, and thermalled with them, no sweat.

Look up the SAGE (Southern Arizona Glider and Electric) fliers in Tucson - they have a pretty good site West of the city at Marana. There is a great group that flies out of the "Chandler Bowl", a city park in Phoenix. You could attend the big contest in Queen's Creek near Phoenix, in February. Also, go to www.soarabq.org and check out the Albuquerque club - they do something literally every weekend, fly every variety of glider and electric you can name and have a fabulous site to fly from.

Must be all those beans and chilis we eat down here.

Yours, Greg

So... Greg... I'm going to be in Las Cruces in a couple of weeks. Where do you fly? I don't do DLGs but I can shorten my high start... and I have a 24 oz. hundred-incher that I throw more than I launch...:D

Hi Joe!
Also freezing over here by Ft Wayne.
There's a program on the radio, they're talking about global warming.
Guess they've never been to Indiana in January! :D
I was reading last night that this is the coldest winter in the USA since 1895
It's 12 degrees here, predicted high of a possible 18 degrees today.
It might warm up to 27 degrees by Thursday.

As Ed and Joe have already posted, Northern Indiana's experiencing a terrible winter. So, I built a little balsa RC plane to fly in our church's gym. Flying in a confined space is NOT like ranging out to look for lift. A wall smote my little plane and rekitted it. Fortunately, I'll be flying with the guys at SAGE near Tucson in a couple of weeks when we "snowbird" for a few weeks in Arizona.

Its soo hot and sticky down here in the past week, you can hardly push through the air when you walk and are always perspiring day and night. I'm sick of it, reading about the cold doesn't sound so bad after this hot spell.

The only thing that makes it bearable is a couple of cold showers a day (read not cold, but warm water) I'm buying two big bags of ice and putting them in a bath full of tap water tomorow, and laying in it for an hour till its hot again. The other aid is cold beer, VERY cold beer in the afternoon, it can sit in the ice filled bathtub with me.

On the bright side, the thermalling has been awesome!

Lets see hear, hot, sticky, flying and drinking weather compared to A@# deep in snow that has to be shoveled so you can get to the car that may not start so you can drive on a sheet of ice.

I'll trade you in a heartbeat!!!

Anything below 60 stinks, I'll chip my own thank you. I don't drive in this crap unless needed and since I have my own ice.....

An today we get the snow with icing on top here in sunny southern Indiana. Not much better than southeast Missouri. (my last known location.) It will get better by June hopefully.
