Compare the files of other 'working' planes in your fms/model folder.
The simple models will have 4 files in the same folder
-.bmp (the skin texture)
-.wav (sound)
-.par (parameter file)
-.x (the 3D model in DirectX format)
As long as these files are copied intact, they should work.
Newer models using the more intricate parameter file are a bit different.

Actually FMS 2.8 uses the same number and type of files, just a different .par parameter file.
Typical on my models is:
model.bmp - image map file for 3D model, could be multiple .bmp
model.mqo - original Metasequoia 3D model
model.x - DirectX rendered 3D model
model.wav - sound file for model
model.par - parameter file, both versions, 2.8 larger
model_prv.jpg - preview of model for FMS
model_readme.txt - read me information file

Did you unzip them first?

Good point, they need to be unzipped with the individual files extracted to the C:\ Program Files\ FMS\ Model directory.
